Book Nesting Ecology of White throated Sparrows Zonotrichia Albicollis

Download or read book Nesting Ecology of White throated Sparrows Zonotrichia Albicollis written by Melissa Olmstead and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of nesting success is one of the most widely-used methods for examining the factors governing recruitment in birds. Many ecological influences act together to increase or decrease nesting success, and knowledge of these mechanisms is crucial for determining the habitat or conservation requirements of a given species. One ecological influence is the timing of breeding, which in many species is related to a decline in nest success later in the breeding season. Much of the research on this subject has focused on cavity-nesting species, and the hypothesis that this seasonal decline is caused by a mismatch between clutch-initiation date and peak food availability for young. I tested this hypothesis in a population of white-throated sparrows ( Zonotrichia albicollis ) in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, and I offer the alternate hypothesis that this decline may be caused by increased predation later in the season. Another influence on nest survival is disturbance caused by habitat management, such as the use of prescribed fire to conserve open- and early-successional habitats. While the goal of these restoration initiatives is to maintain landscape heterogeneity, the level of disturbance required to improve a habitat cannot exceed the tolerance of target species. Much of the research on this subject has focused on community-level studies quantifying the change in species abundances after a fire event. These studies capture only the most coarse-grained effects of fire, and may not be used to elucidate the mechanisms driving these changes in population size. I investigate the effect of spring burning on the nesting success of a single species, white-throated sparrows, and reveal that, while overall nesting success is not affected, fire has a substantial impact on nest site selection. This has implications for future controlled burn initiatives, since a matrix of suitable nesting habitat must be left untouched in order to allow breeding in the first year after the burn. Observing the same population in both a natural and managed system represents a valuable contribution to our knowledge of the effects of management strategies on avian nesting success.

Book Impacts of Bloodborne Pathogen Infections on Breeding Ecology and Success in White throated Sparrows Zonotrichia Albicollis

Download or read book Impacts of Bloodborne Pathogen Infections on Breeding Ecology and Success in White throated Sparrows Zonotrichia Albicollis written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bloodborne pathogens have significant and persistent impacts on avian populations worldwide, including decreased long-term survival and population size. Existing research indicates that chronic pathogen infections may have negative impacts on nesting success, such as decreased numbers of offspring, hatching probability, and fledging success. In species with multiple reproductive strategies, pathogen infections may have different impacts based on the role of the infected parent. White-throated Sparrows are a polymorphic species that mate disassortatively and display alternative reproductive strategies associated with color morph. White-striped birds are more aggressive, more promiscuous, and less parental than their tan- striped counterparts. I examined the reproductive outcomes of a population of White-throated Sparrows and investigated the factors that influenced variation in reproductive success within the population. I specifically focused on the influence of pathogen infection within the population and how infection interacts with the color morph of the infected parent. I found that bloodborne pathogen infection in white-striped, but not tan-striped, parents was associated with decreased nesting success. I also found an apparent association between pathogen infection in both parents and larger and heavier nestlings, which suggests a trade-off between prospective survival and reproductive effort."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Regional Silviculture of the United States, 2nd Edition John W. Barrett This is the only regional silviculture text now on the market. It assesses the significant biological, physical, and economic qualities of forest regions in the continental U.S., and their effect on silviculture practices. The first chapter provides an overview of the forests of the U.S. and introduces the topic of social and institutional constraints on silviculture. Subsequent chapters each deal with a specific forest region, are written by a person intimately acquainted with the locality, and follow a regular outline to provide cohesion and facilitate regional comparisons. 1980 551 pp. Forest Ecology, 3rd Edition Stephen H. Spurr and Burton V. Barnes The growing interest and literature in this field created a need for a fresh updating of this classic text. It remains a comprehensive yet highly readable account of real world forests, including ecological aspects of successful forest management. Broad coverage embraces genetics and variation, environmental factors, site, community relations, ecosystem studies, glacial forest history, post-settlement history, compostition and succession. 1980 687 pp. Wildlife Biology, 2nd Edition Raymond F. Dasmann This updated and revised edition of the standard introductory text brings together the principles of ecology and population biology and the practice of wildlife conservation and management. It presents basic information on the value and present status of wild animal life, including a history of human relationships with and attitudes toward wildlife. Examines wildlife within the context of ecosystems, indicating why single-species approaches to conservation and management often fail. 1981 212 pp.
