Book Nesting Behavior Growth Rates and Size Distribution of Loggerhead Sea Turtles Caretta Caretta on Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge

Download or read book Nesting Behavior Growth Rates and Size Distribution of Loggerhead Sea Turtles Caretta Caretta on Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge written by Heather L. Cason and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: An eight year study of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) was conducted on Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge (BLB NWR). A 3 month in-water survey also was conducted in 2008 along the coast of Georgia and Northern Florida. The nesting trends on BLB NWR were evaluated to provide updated information for existing management plans as well as to determine if recruitment was occurring. The in-water study also shed insight on the status of recovery for the population as a whole. The remigration interval, a key nesting trend, averaged 2.93 years, higher than previous studies in Georgia. Females nesting on BLB NWR grew an average of 0.48 cm/yr. The population was composed of mostly medium-sized individuals, although the newly PIT tagged individuals were classified in the small to medium size classes (based on curved carapace length). In-water captures were composed mostly of medium-sized juveniles with very low numbers of adults (>85cm), although surveys were conducted during the nesting season. Only 0.47 % of the in-water observations were recaptures. Due to the increase in small, newly tagged individuals on BLB NWR and the low number of recaptures from the in-water study, the result of this study suggests that recruitment is taking place in the C. caretta population of Georgia, and the population is on its way to recovery.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of nest relocation on nest parameters and embryonic development. The nesting biology of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was studied on Blackbeard Island in 2005 and 2006, during the nesting season. Research nests were randomly assigned one of two treatments (in-situ or relocated). In-situ nests (n=35) were left in the original location, while relocated nests (n=34) were moved above the spring high-tide line and into areas that were considered to be of favorable nesting conditions. Data-loggers were placed in the center of nests to record the temperature during the incubation duration. Incubation durations, nest temperatures, hatch success, and hatchling straight carapace length were compared for all research nests. The observed nests showed similar nest parameters and embryonic development regardless of nest treatment. Differences in nest parameters and embryonic development seemed to be driven by abiotic conditions of the nesting site. This study shows that nest relocation can be used to alleviate nests of extreme abiotic conditions to increase hatch success, without altering embryonic development.

Book Evaluation of Length Distributions and Growth Variance to Improve Assessment of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta Caretta

This book was released on 2010 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nest counts from the largest subpopulation of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) in the Atlantic, peninsular Florida, have been declining since 1998. Analyzing trends of nests and adult females is insufficient to determine the overall status of a sea turtle population, due to variation in nesting frequency and a 25 - 35 year time lag between hatching and maturation. While nest numbers of this threatened species have declined by 50% since 1998, catches of juvenile turtles in many areas have increased. Better assessment of population status and diagnosis of the causes of population trends are possible if we examine existing data on changes in abundance and size distribution from in-water surveys of juvenile and subadult turtles as well as adults. I have plotted the length frequency data and catch rates of neritic turtles (juvenile, subadult and adult turtles that inhabit nearshore waters) collected from 1980 - 2007 at 4 in-water sites ranging from North Carolina to Florida (N=10,486). I also examined the length distributions recorded from strandings of dead turtles found on beaches in the Gulf of Mexico (N=4,308) and along the U.S. east coast (N=10,918) from 1990 - 2005. I found a similar pattern in length distribution shifts over time, which provides compelling evidence that the data are revealing true population change. The data suggest an increase in the overall abundance of juvenile turtles in the southeast U.S. since the late 1990s and an increase in the median size of neritic juveniles (40 - 90 cm) since 1990. There has also been a reduction in the number and proportion of small (

Book Environmental Factors Affecting Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta Caretta Nesting Hatching and Incubation Patterns in Broward County Florida

Download or read book Environmental Factors Affecting Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta Caretta Nesting Hatching and Incubation Patterns in Broward County Florida written by Zoey Ellen Best and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive success in loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtles is strongly dependent on the effective placement and internal conditions of their nests. Embryos rely on optimal incubation conditions for proper development and growth, which determines how many hatchlings will emerge from the nest. The internal microclimate of each nest is delicately balanced and can be easily influenced by external environmental conditions. This study was designed to examine several environmental variables and determine their effects on sea turtle nesting numbers, hatching success, and incubation conditions in Broward County Florida. Over a span of 25 years (1991-2015), the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program has collected data on each sea turtle nest laid in Broward County. This data was analyzed and plotted to visualize nesting and hatching trends, and regressions were fitted to make comparisons to historic air temperature, sea surface temperature, precipitation, and lunar illumination data. These regressions were tested for significance, and each environmental variable was found to have varying levels of impact on sea turtle nesting and hatching behavior. Of the environmental variables considered in this study, analyses suggest that sea turtles are most responsive to temperature, with sea surface temperature serving as the best proxy for predicting nesting behaviors. Air temperature over the incubation period was found to be the best indicator for hatch success percentage. Air temperature, sea surface temperature, and precipitation averages all significantly affected the length of the incubation period. The regression models created in this study could be used to examine the interactions between climatic variables, and to indicate what impacts can be expected by these various environmental factors. This information could be used to estimate the future effects of climate change on sea turtle reproduction, and to predict general reproductive success and future population trends.
