Book The Spanish American Cr nica Modernista Temporality and Material Culture

Download or read book The Spanish American Cr nica Modernista Temporality and Material Culture written by Andrew Reynolds and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-20 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores how Spanish American modernista writers incorporated journalistic formalities and industry models through the crónica genre to advance their literary preoccupations. Through a variety of modernista writers, including José Martí, Amado Nervo, Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera and Rubén Darío, Reynolds argues that extra-textual elements – such as temporality, the material formats of the newspaper and book, and editorial influence – animate the modernista movement’s literary ambitions and aesthetic ideology. Thus, instead of being stripped of an esteemed place in the literary sphere due to participation in the market-based newspaper industry, journalism actually brought modernismo closer to the writers’ desired artistic autonomy. Reynolds uncovers an original philosophical and sociological dimension of the literary forms that govern modernista studies, situating literary journalism of the movement within historical, economic and temporal contexts. Furthermore, he demonstrates that journalism of the movement was eventually consecrated in book form, revealing modernista intentionality for their mass-produced, seemingly utilitarian journalistic articles. The Spanish American Crónica Modernista, Temporality, and Material Culture thereby enables a better understanding of how the material textuality of the crónica impacts its interpretation and readership.

Book Horizontal Vertigo

  • Author : Juan Villoro
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2021-03-23
  • ISBN : 1524748897
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Horizontal Vertigo written by Juan Villoro and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once intimate and wide-ranging, and as enthralling, surprising, and vivid as the place itself, this is a uniquely eye-opening tour of one of the great metropolises of the world, and its largest Spanish-speaking city. Horizontal Vertigo: The title refers to the fear of ever-impending earthquakes that led Mexicans to build their capital city outward rather than upward. With the perspicacity of a keenly observant flaneur, Juan Villoro wanders through Mexico City seemingly without a plan, describing people, places, and things while brilliantly drawing connections among them. In so doing he reveals, in all its multitudinous glory, the vicissitudes and triumphs of the city ’s cultural, political, and social history: from indigenous antiquity to the Aztec period, from the Spanish conquest to Mexico City today—one of the world’s leading cultural and financial centers. In this deeply iconoclastic book, Villoro organizes his text around a recurring series of topics: “Living in the City,” “City Characters,” “Shocks,” “Crossings,” and “Ceremonies.” What he achieves, miraculously, is a stunning, intriguingly coherent meditation on Mexico City’s genius loci, its spirit of place.

Book In Praise of Reading and Fiction

Download or read book In Praise of Reading and Fiction written by Mario Vargas Llosa and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 7, 2010, Mario Vargas Llosa was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. His Nobel lLecture is a resounding tribute to fiction's power to inspire readers to greater ambition, to dissent, and to political action. "We would be worse than we are without the good books we have read, more conformist, not as restless, more submissive, and the critical spirit, the engine of progress, would not even exist," Vargas Llosa writes. "Like writing, reading is a protest against the insufficiencies of life. When we look in fiction for what is missing in life, we are saying, with no need to say it or even to know it, that life as it is does not satisfy our thirst for the absolute—the foundation of the human condition—and should be better." Vargas Llosa's lecture is a powerful argument for the necessity of literature in our lives today. For, as he eloquently writes, "literature not only submerges us in the dream of beauty and happiness but alerts us to every kind of oppression."

Book Mexican Literature in Theory

Download or read book Mexican Literature in Theory written by Ignacio M. Snchez Prado and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexican Literature in Theory is the first book in any language to engage post-independence Mexican literature from the perspective of current debates in literary and cultural theory. It brings together scholars whose work is defined both by their innovations in the study of Mexican literature and by the theoretical sophistication of their scholarship. Mexican Literature in Theory provides the reader with two contributions. First, it is one of the most complete accounts of Mexican literature available, covering both canonical texts as well as the most important works in contemporary production. Second, each one of the essays is in itself an important contribution to the elucidation of specific texts. Scholars and students in fields such as Latin American studies, comparative literature and literary theory will find in this book compelling readings of literature from a theoretical perspective, methodological suggestions as to how to use current theory in the study of literature, and important debates and revisions of major theoretical works through the lens of Mexican literary works.

Book Poems of Faith and Doubt

Download or read book Poems of Faith and Doubt written by Amado Nervo and published by SLG Press. This book was released on with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SLG Press Contemplative Poetry 1 This translation has sought to reproduce the plain, rhymed forms of Nervo’s poems to convey the direct, yet complex, ideas of faith and doubt of the original texts. Nervo believed each of his poems—a prayer, an expression of comfort, praise or questioning—to be an act of love: the job of the translator is to hand on, undimmed, that belief to the reader. ‘Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones’ (Proverbs 16:24).
