Download or read book Rome Is Burning written by Anthony A. Barrett and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nero became Emperor in A.D 54. On the evening of July 18, 64 A. D., it seems that a lamp was left unextinguished in a stall still heaped with piles of combustible material. Whether this was accidental or deliberate we cannot now determine, and normally it would not have led to anything that would have attracted even local attention. But there was a gusty wind that night, and the flickering flame was fanned onto the flammable wares. The ensuing fire quickly spread. Before the onlookers could absorb what was happening one of the most catastrophic disasters ever to be endured by Rome was already underway. It was a disaster that brought death and misery to thousands. In Nero and the Great Fire of Rome, Anthony Barrett draws on new textual interpretations and the latest archaeological evidence, to tell the story of this pivotal moment in Rome's history and its lasting significance. Barrett argues that the Great Fire, which destroyed much of the city, changed the course of Roman History. The fire led to the collapse of Nero's regime, and his disorderly exit brought an end to Rome's first imperial dynasty, transforming from thereto, the way that emperors were selected. It also led to the first systematic persecution of the Christians, who were blamed for the blaze. Barrett provides the first comprehensive study of this dramatic event, which remains a fascination of the public imagination, and continues to be a persistent theme in the art and literature of popular culture today"--

Book While Rome Burned

  • Author : Virginia M Closs
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press

Download or read book While Rome Burned written by Virginia M Closs and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Rome Burned attends to the intersection of fire, city, and emperor in ancient Rome, tracing the critical role that urban conflagration played as both reality and metaphor in the politics and literature of the early imperial period. Urban fires presented a consistent problem for emperors from Augustus to Hadrian, especially given the expectation that the princeps be both a protector and provider for Rome’s population. The problem manifested itself differently for each leader, and each sought to address it in distinctive ways. This history can be traced most precisely in Roman literature, as authors addressed successive moments of political crisis through dialectical engagement with prior incendiary catastrophes in Rome’s historical past and cultural repertoire. Working in the increasingly repressive environment of the early principate, Roman authors frequently employed “figured” speech and mythopoetic narratives to address politically risky topics. In response to shifting political and social realities, the literature of the early imperial period reimagines and reanimates not just historical fires, but also archetypal and mythic representations of conflagration. Throughout, the author engages critically with the growing subfield of disaster studies, as well as with theoretical approaches to language, allusion, and cultural memory.

Book A Language of Emotion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur Bradley
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2009-05-13
  • ISBN : 1467056227
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book A Language of Emotion written by Arthur Bradley and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lively, informative essays, all related to music, are as accessible as a chatty bedside reader. A central theme is listener response, and the techniques and structures that mold it. The story starts with sound waves, the ear, and the brain. Did song come before speech? Was it a factor in evolution? Some think singing helps complete the wiring of that organic work-in-progress, the infant brain. Check out the frequency doubling that built our familiar scale. Learn where the word organizing came from. Follow development of the instruments as they achieved volume, accurate intonation, range, and consistent timbre. There is criticism, but little disparagement. Any willing audience deserves respect. Musical examples come from Tin Pan Alley as often as the opera. Whether at a jazz club or the concert hall, the writer cannot hide his impatience with artists seeking to educate or intimidate. Music can be recreation or vocation. Does your instrument match your personality or some physical attribute? We instantly distinguish a bell, a piano, and a guitar; why not a clarinet, flute, or violin? What does the conductor do? A Language of Emotion embraces such matters. The relatively imprecise science of Psychology examines music working its magic. We all have favorites. Is it hype and marketing and peer influence, or do our choices make personal statements? Music, politics, religion, and social forces are twisted threads in the fabric of civilization. Nothing reflects the spirit of an era better than the works of its most creative individuals. In most cases, they blend smoothly in sequence. Monteverdi, Beethoven, and Stravinsky, to name just three, clearly got ahead of the curve and helped define the world around them.

Book Ecology Ethics and Hope

Download or read book Ecology Ethics and Hope written by Andrew T. Brei and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology, Ethics, and Hope explores what hope is, how it operates, and whether or not it is important in our response to ecological challenges like climate change, deforestation, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The book offers an accessible and timely overview of this emerging topic within environmental ethics, a platform for further discussion, and refinement of the notion of hope. Hope has started to receive more theoretical attention from philosophers and social scientists. In light of worsening ecological conditions, the concept of hope may offer motivation for us to change our destructive ways and conserve the ecosystem goods and systems we depend on. The authors in this collection take stock of the various accounts of what hope is (or is not), what it does (or does not), and how relevant it is to ecological thinking. The book covers topics including the psychology of hope (how it might operate and change minds), hope as a motivator of positive action, and hope’s essence in the context of a virtue- or obligation-focused morality. Contributors: Elizabeth Andre, Assistant Professor of Outdoor Education, Northland College, USA; Jonathan Beever, Postdoctoral Scholar, Rock Ethics Institute, Penn State University, USA; Andrew T. Brei, Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy, St Mary’s University; Andrew Fiala, Professor of Philosophy, California State University-Fresno, USA; Trevor Hedberg, Graduate Student, University of Tennessee Knoxville, USA; Lisa Kretz, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, University of Evansville, USA; Michael Nelson, Professor of Environmental Ethics and Philosophy, Oregon State University, USA; John Nolt, Professor of Philosophy, University of Tennessee Knoxville, USA; Brian Treanor, Professor of Philosophy, Loyola Marymount University, USA
