Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nerissa’s Ring is the last two words of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. It is “upside down” because the merchants in the play were on a pilgrimage from Venice to Belmont, the home of the queenly princess, Portia, whose assistant was Nerissa. Shakespeare asserts that one can get from Venice to Belmont either by land or by sea. It turns out Belmonte is an inland town in northeastern Portugal which fits that geography. Furthermore, today’s Belmonte is the home of some 300 Jews (among its population of 3,000) who have lived there since the 16th century as “Christians,” but in the 1980s they “came out” publicly as Jews. Although no secret to the Gentiles, they literally had worshiped their Jewish God underground, while also dutifully attending church and silently telling God that place was nothing but a pile of stones. Such were the consequences of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions (Shakespeare probably anglicized Belmont, dropping the “e”).

Book Consent in Shakespeare

Download or read book Consent in Shakespeare written by Artemis Preeshl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining how female characters speak and act during coming of age, engagement, marriage, and intimacy, Consent in Shakespeare will enhance understanding about how and why women spoke, remained silent, or acted as they did in relation to their intimate partners in Early Modern and contemporary private and public situations in and around the Mediterranean. Consent in intimate relationships is front and center in today’s conversations. This book re-examines the verbal and physical interactions of female-identified characters in Early Modern and contemporary cultures in Shakespeare’s Mediterranean comedies and the sources from which he derived his plays. This re-examination of the words that women say or do not say, and actions that women do or do not take, in Shakespeare’s Mediterranean plays and his probable sources sheds light on how Shakespeare’s audiences might have perceived Mediterranean cultural mores and norms. Assessment of source materials for Shakespeare’s comedies set in the Balkans, France, Italy, the Near East, North Africa, and Spain suggests how women of diverse backgrounds communicated in everyday life and peak life experiences in the Early Modern era. Given Shakespeare’s impact worldwide, this initiative to shift the conversation about the power of consent of female protagonists and supporting characters in Shakespeare’s Mediterranean plays will further transform conversations about consent in class, board and conference rooms, and the international stage.

Book Social Zooarchaeology

Download or read book Social Zooarchaeology written by Nerissa Russell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-14 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a systematic overview of social zooarchaeology, which takes a holistic view of human-animal relations in the past. Until recently, archaeological analysis of faunal evidence has primarily focused on the role of animals in the human diet and subsistence economy. This book, however, argues that animals have always played many more roles in human societies: as wealth, companions, spirit helpers, sacrificial victims, totems, centerpieces of feasts, objects of taboos, and more. These social factors are as significant as taphonomic processes in shaping animal bone assemblages. Nerissa Russell uses evidence derived from not only zooarchaeology, but also ethnography, history and classical studies, to suggest the range of human-animal relationships and to examine their importance in human society. Through exploring the significance of animals to ancient humans, this book provides a richer picture of past societies.

Book S S Nerissa the Final Crossing

Download or read book S S Nerissa the Final Crossing written by William Dziadyk and published by BD Pro Inc.. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable human story, one that is worth reading. - Maritime Engineering Journal Fascinating story is told in a thorough and interesting manner, highly recommended. - Action Stations magazine, Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, HMCS Sackville Book is intriguing. Recommended for navy enthusiasts and more casual readers alike. - Starshell magazine, Naval Association of Canada --- Second Edition, with an Addendum. In the written histories of the Battle of the Atlantic, the S.S. Nerissa is overlooked. She was the only ship transporting Canadian Army troops to be lost to enemy action during the entire Second World War. The details of the sinking were highly classified until almost 50 years after the event. The tragic loss of this ship resulted in the third largest loss of life for a ship sunk by U-boats in the approaches to the British Isles. These human losses touched not only Canadian families, but also families in allied nations and in the neutral United States … and these losses are largely unknown to our current generation. Two hundred and seven lives were lost: 81 Merchant Navy; 73 Canadian Army; 10 Royal Canadian Navy; 4 Royal Navy; 8 Royal Air Force; 11 American pilots (UK Air Transport Auxiliary); 3 Royal Norwegian Air Force; 3 Canadian government employees; and 14 civilian passengers (including 3 children). After these many years, their stories deserve to be told. Included are eye-witness accounts from many of the survivors and some stories of those who perished. The first torpedo exploded into the Engine Room. Six minutes later, as the lifeboats were being lowered, U-552 (Erich Topp) fired a coup de grâce torpedo into the already stricken Nerissa. Of the ship’s eight lifeboats, only one was successfully launched, one was upright but flooded, four were capsized and two were pulled down with the ship. Much of this true story is based on the analysis of testimony, recollections and official reports taken from survivors, as well as declassified Canadian, British and German documents. Nerissa usually sailed independently, not in escorted convoys. This book focuses on the events which led up to the sinking by U-552 and the deadly 10 hours awaiting rescue about 80 miles off the coast of Ireland. Only eighty-four survivors were alive to be rescued by HMS Veteran, while HMS Hurricane and RAF 502 Squadron aircraft provided anti-submarine sweeps. The book also provides humanizing details to a very tragic story. Addressed is the public relations dilemma related to informing families of their losses, while the allied authorities enforced security restrictions related to a major wartime incident. Also included is relevant historical context of Britain’s overall war efforts at that time; and in particular Bletchley Park’s significant advances in decrypting German naval Enigma encoded messages … in the few weeks before and after the sinking. --- The Addendum summarizes results of recent collaborative analysis, by the author and a retired Irish journalist, of various historical records which may now allow identification of bodies from the S.S. Nerissa which washed ashore onto the Irish coast, but had not been identified during the war.
