Book excerpt: For many reasons, as President of the International Society of Nephrology, I am happy and honored to write a brief introduction to Nephrology, the Proceedings of the IXth International Congress of Nephrology. One of these reasons is specially treasured: I edited the two books published after our first Congress (Geneva-Evian 1960). The 1984 vintage will certainly be as good as the preceding ones. And, for any nephrologist, whatever his or her field of interest, many observations will be found in the Proceedings that will enhance their personal work. It is characteristic for our Congresses to be the converging point upon which many different orientations join together and form the nephrology that is researched and practiced throughout the world. What could replace a State-of-the-Art lecture delivered by a selected ne phrologist whose work is of the highest quality? At times, even more revealing are those presentations made by non-nephrologists, the basic scientists who bring us fresh data and new concepts far removed from the reader's daily world. But attending such a lecture is never enough. Their texts should be read and reread. Symposia and workshops, as sources of precise and up dated knowledge espoused by experts, are often heart-breaking as they shake established dogma. Therefore, they should be neither neglected nor forgotten but scrutinized carefully. The evidence which could eventually lead to new concepts or hypotheses has to be weighed accurately and then either rejected, discarded temporarily, or accepted, even if the latter implies dramatic change.

Download or read book Nephrology written by Menna Clatworthy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nephrology is an important speciality; patients with acute or chronic kidney failure are encountered in every medical and surgical speciality, as well as in general practice. On most general medical rotations and on most surgical wards there are patients with renal problems. Renal medicine is taught on rotation during degree courses, and Foundation training programmes frequently include attachments in nephrology, urology, and renal transplantation. Nephrology: Clinical Cases Uncovered contains clinical presentations with real-life patient cases and outcomes as seen on the wards and in exams, and leads students through a practical approach to diagnosis and management of kidney disease. Following a question-answer approach, including self-assessment material and a ‘refresher’ section on the basic science of this clinical area, Nephrology: Clinical Cases Uncovered features investigations and the treatment options available for patients with renal disease, including those requiring renal replacement therapy with dialysis and transplantation. Difficult concepts are clarified, using simple diagrams to explain the link between pathology and clinical presentation. Nephrology: Clinical Cases Uncovered is ideal for medical students, junior doctors on the Foundation Programme, GP trainees, and specialist nurses and nurse practitioners. This book is also a useful refresher for nephrology trainees at the beginning of their specialist training programme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise review of the core principles and clinical entities associated with nephrology at the point of care. 4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW "This is an absolutely wonderful book and excellent for medical students, physician assistants, and trainees in all the medical disciplines. It differs from other handbooks or concise manuals by providing more detailed coverage of the fundamental pathophysiology and basic science behind each disorder, which facilitates understanding. The leading questions, highlighting key points in a colorful manner, the numerous figures and algorithms, and the easy-to-read style make this book rather unique. Although the width of the pages is wider than the usual handbooks and does not make this book a true "pocket" book, the larger font and the addition of all the tables and figures make it much easier to read. I highly recommend this book to students and trainees rotating on the nephrology service."--Doody's Review Service Covers all major acute and chronic kidney diseases, from acid/base disturbances to stones to end stage renal disease. Features a concise, manageable format with recommended timeframes for mastering the content, case studies, and summary tables. Perfect for trainees and practicing non-specialists.

Book Geriatric Nephrology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dimitrios G. Oreopoulos
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400942559
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Geriatric Nephrology written by Dimitrios G. Oreopoulos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year was 1943. As a third-year medical student at Stanford, I was about to witness the beginning of a medical miracle. Dr. Arthur Bloomfield, Professor of Medicine, had selected my patient, a middle aged man, who was dying of acute pneumococcal pneumonia, as one of the first patients to receive miniscule doses (by today's standards) of his meagre supply of a new drug - penicillin. The patient's response amazed everyone especially this impressionable medical student. The rest of the story is history. With one stroke, the introduction of penicillin removed from the medical scene the 'friend of the aged' - lobar pneumonia. The consequences, which no one could have imagined at the time, are still becoming manifest as other 'miracles' such as respirators, artificial kidneys and many potent new antibiotics have come upon the scene. All of us are aware that these miracles have created a variety of new challenges around the states of dying and near dying. We have no easy answers for these problems. Nevertheless as dialysis techniques, especially CAPD, are applied more widely to the treatment of the elderly, the task of helping the patient meet death with dignity becomes increasingly important and vexing because once begun, dialysis is difficult to terminate.
