Book excerpt: 192 species of Nepenthes are known from the Old World tropics. These pitcher plants include the largest and most spectacular of all carnivorous plants. So-called because they produce highly specialised foliage that takes the form of hollow, water-filled "pitchers", these extraordinary plants prey upon arthropods and other small animals. The biggest Nepenthes catch the largest animal prey of all carnivorous plants, including on rare occasions, vertebrates as large as frogs, mice and even rats. All known Nepenthes are documented in this three volume work for the very first time.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nepenthaceae: Mit 95 Einzelbildern in 19 Figuren The annual growths of fine fibrous roots, in about 15 Species studied, are greenish yellow round the growing apex, but soon they assume a black-brown color. They are closely beset with brown absorptive root hairs, all of which remain functional throughout the season. Subsequent annual development results in the production of a copiously branched root system. Some authors have stated that average root-develop ment in Nepenthes is comparatively poor and feeble. In healthy well grown plants this is not so. The active absorptive root-hair system is also exceptionally rich and abundant. By subsequent formation of a root cambium and associated tissue, the brown epidermal layer and subjacent cortex become split and ultimately shed in older roots. These then assume a yellow or flesh color that may be retained for years, but finally they become yellow - brown. This two volume work examines both genera of Old World pitcher plants (Nepenthes and Cephalotus) and documents the ecology and natural diversity of every known species for the first time and in unparalleled detail... Download or read book Floral Diagrams written by Louis P. Ronse De Craene and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Floral morphology is key for understanding floral evolution and plant identification. Floral diagrams are two-dimensional representations of flowers that replace extensive descriptions or elaborate drawings to convey information in a clear and unbiased way. Following the same outline as the first edition, this comprehensive guide includes updated and relevant literature, represents the latest phylogeny, and features 28 new diagrams. Diagrams are presented in the context of the most recent classifications, covering a variety of families and illustrating the floral diversity of major groups of plants. A strong didactic tool for observing and understanding floral structures, these diagrams are the obvious counterpart to any genetic study in flowering plants and to the discussion of major adaptations and evolutionary trends of flowers. This book is invaluable for researchers and students working on plant structure, development and systematics, as well as being an important resource for plant ecologists, evolutionary botanists and horticulturists.
