Book Street Shrines of Kirtipur Nepal

Download or read book Street Shrines of Kirtipur Nepal written by Mehrdad Shokoohy and published by . This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The streets of historic Kirtipur, as with other towns of the Kathmandu Valley, are studded with small shrines dedicated to clan and family gods, the Hindu deities or to the Lord Buddha. These shrines, many not higher than eye-level, are perhaps the most distinct landmarks - or nodes - of the urban environment, and while the tiered roofs of the grand temples distinguish the skyline and the townscape, the street shrines are features which, apart from their religious and social significance, contribute to the individuality of character and the disposition of each street or neighbourhood.

Book The Buddhist Holy Sites of Nepal

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Library of Tibetan Works and Archives
  • Release : 2020-01-01
  • ISBN : 9387023966
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book The Buddhist Holy Sites of Nepal written by Nyanang Bhusepa Rinchen DHARLO and published by Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook highlights multiple stupas, temples and other Buddhist holy sites spread throughout Nepal as told in Sutras and Tantras. I am impressed that a detailed explanation of these holy sites, their principal deities, and historical significance are clearly presented in this work. In particular, this book describes in detail three major Stupas and centuries old historical accounts of the Tibetan Lamas who restored and instilled the gilded copper ornamentation of these hallowed sites. Information otherwise not widely known is also covered in this book such as the fact that the great 5th Dalai Lama granted a stipend for a Stupa caretaker, as well as the fact that the great 13th and 14th Dalai Lamas made contributions towards the major restorations of the revered Swayambunath and Boudhnath Stupas. In addition, there is a particularly well researched section on the temple built by Lichavi King Shiva Deva, the grandfather of Princess Bhrikurti, the Nepalese wife of King Songtsen Gampo. It includes the related history of the arrival of Bhrikuti's father King Udaya Deva to Lhasa for sanctuary and her brother, Narendra Deva's successful return to Nepal, fully supported and led by King Songtsen Gampo and his soldiers. I highly recommend this book, "The Marvelous Music of Narratives.” It is worth reading and indeed is a required companion for all pilgrims, especially those new visitors looking for fuller experience of these sites. Book Worship Sound Spaces

Download or read book Worship Sound Spaces written by Christine Guillebaud and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship Sound Spaces unites specialists from architecture, acoustic engineering and the social sciences to encourage closer analysis of the sound environments within places of worship. Gathering a wide range of case studies set in Europe, Asia, North America, the Middle East and Africa, the book presents investigations into Muslim, Christian and Hindu spaces. These diverse cultural contexts demonstrate the composite nature of designing and experiencing places of worship. Beginning with a historical overview of the three primary indicators in acoustic design of religious buildings, reverberation, intelligibility and clarity, the second part of this edited collection offers a series of field studies devoted to perception, before moving onto recent examples of restoration of the sound ambiances of former religious buildings. Written for academics and students interested in architecture, cultural heritage, acoustics, sensory studies and sound.
