Dr Lawoti makes a case for setting up a new Constituent Assembly and for following the principle of self-determination to reform the polity. He also makes several important recommendations for the construction of an inclusive and democratic Nepal.

Book Contentious Politics and Democratization in Nepal

Download or read book Contentious Politics and Democratization in Nepal written by Mahendra Lawoti and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2007-09-10 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contradicting the popular thesis that contentious politics generally promotes democratization, this topical book shows that some forms of contentious politics can hinder it, even as other forms strengthen democracy. It also suggests that the nature of activities—whether they are coercive or voluntary—lead to different effects on democratization. A timely addition to the literature on Nepal, it will be of interest to scholars studying democratic politics, as well as practitioners engaged in nurturing development in fledgling democracies.

  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Paradise Lost written by Ali Riaz and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paradise Lost examines the state-society relationships in Nepal and demonstrates that the nature of the state, disjuncture between the state and the society, and the rupture of the ideological hegemony of the ruling class of Nepal have created a situation where existing institutional frameworks are disintegrating and the state is rapidly unraveling. Dr. Ali Riaz and Dr. Subho Basu analyze the roles of ethnicity, identity, and deprivation, in engendering discontent and the rise of the Maoists as a formidable political force. Mindful of the geo-strategic importance of the country, this book contextualizes these domestic developments within the post-9/11 global world. Jointly authored by a political scientist and a historian this book brings together structural and historical perspectives. Written in an engaging language, Paradise Lost? will appeal to political scientists, historians, sociologists, and those interested in current affairs.

Book The Prospects of Democracy in Nepal

Download or read book The Prospects of Democracy in Nepal written by Sebastian Erckel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: South Asia, grade: good, University of Kerala (Department of Political Science), course: Politics of South Asia, language: English, abstract: This essay analyses the chances for democracy in Nepal after the declaration of the Republic of Nepal. This is done by examining earlier experiments with democracy and the reasons for their failure. The main actors of Nepali politics, namely the so- called democratic parties (Nepali Congress and the Left), the Monarchy and the Maoists, receive special attention. South Asia is widely considered to be one of the most volatile regions in the world. In the roughly 60 years since the end of the colonial era the region has witnessed almost all possible types of internal and external conflicts- from wars between states to military takeovers, ethnic insurgencies and social uprisings. While every country was affected, the distinct geographical and cultural features of South Asia contributed to a dangerous interrelatedness of these conflicts. The situation has become even more threatening after both India and Pakistan successfully tested nuclear weapons in 1998. However, the year 2008 has seen some remarkable developments in South Asia that give reason to look at least cautiously optimistic into the future. In Pakistan, elections marked the return to civilian rule, Bhutan experienced its first elections ever, and in Nepal a Constituent Assembly was elected that shortly afterwards abolished the world's last Hindu monarchy by declaring the country a federal and secular republic. Furthermore, the caretaker government in Bangladesh has announced its plans to hold elections at the end of the year. Nonetheless, history indicates that a reversal of these developments cannot be ruled out. It is therefore necessary to evaluate the prospects of democratisation in the light of past events. This paper attempts to assess the chances of a successful democratisation pr

Book Nation Building and Federalism in Nepal

Download or read book Nation Building and Federalism in Nepal written by Krishna Hachhethu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nation-Building and Federalism in Nepal primarily deals with the presentation and elucidation of identity-based federalism, a unique concept and a novel form of federalism. The most notable source of first-hand information was garnered through the author's involvement in constitution-making by proxy, as a member of the High-Level State Restructuring Recommendation Commission and as a facilitator of several interaction programmes conducted in dialogue form: that is, dialogues with citizens, stakeholders, members of the Constituent Assembly, office-bearers within political parties (intra-party), and leaders across the parties (inter-party). This book, therefore, discusses these issues and helps provide insights into the politics behind the parties' shifting positions on contentious issues related to the constitution at the time of its making; understand better the conflicting aspirations from and competing perceptions of restructuring the Nepali state among the people from different ethnic backgrounds; and capture the role played by intermediate agencies at a critical time of its constitution-making (2006-2015).
