Book excerpt: This study seeks to build a better understanding of the nature of incomes and poverty in Nepal, and to propose an affordable set of measures to reduce the incidence of poverty. It consists of three main elements: (a) a quantitative analysis of the conditions of the poor and the non-poor, their sources and levels of income; (b) an analysis of the micro-economic factors influencing incomes, the constraints facing the poor, and the potential contribution of various sectors to raising personal incomes; and (c) an appraisal of the effectiveness of existing poverty alleviation projects. It concludes by outlining the elements of a medium- to long-term poverty alleviation strategy for Nepal.

Download or read book The Road to Federalism in Nepal Myanmar and Sri Lanka written by Michael Breen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nations built on exclusion and assimilation, decades of civil war, widespread poverty, authoritarianism and the decline of democracy. Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka are travelling a road to federalism. Institutions and ethnic identity have interacted to privilege some and marginalise others. But when the right conditions prevail, political equality can be restored. This book charts the origins and evolution of federalism and other approaches to the accommodation of minority ethnic groups in Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. It applies a historical institutionalism methodology to understand why federalism has been resisted, what causes it to be established and what design options are most likely to balance otherwise competing centripetal and centrifugal forces. Breen shows how Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka are finding a middle ground whereby deliberative and moderating institutions are combined with accommodating ones to support a political equality among groups and individuals.
Download or read book Regional Development Planning and Practice written by Mukunda Mishra and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, through a bunch of systematic and analytical notes and scientific commentaries, acquaints the readers with the innovative methods of regional development, measurement of the development in regional scale, regional development models, and policy prescriptions. Conceptualizing development as a regional process is a geographer's brainchild, and the sense of region has long been rooted deeply in the fundamental research practices that geographers are accustomed to. The geographical perspective of regions entails conceptualizing them nested horizontally as the formal region and hierarchical relationships in space with spatial flows or interactions as the functional region. In geographical research, the region works as a tool by serving as a statistical unit of analysis. More importantly, however, regions serve as the fundamental spatial units of management and planning by specifying a territory or a part of it for which a certain spatial development or regulatory plan is sought. This book addresses the complex processes in different regions of the world, particularly South Asia, to perceive the regional development planning involved and the sustainable management practiced there. The book is a useful resource for socio-economic planners, policymakers, and policy researchers.
