Book Governance for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Governance for Sustainable Development written by Rosalie Callway and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the process of globalization continues and power imbalances between decision-making institutions become increasingly apparent, the need for a critical assessment of the way in which we manage our interaction with the natural environment becomes ever more urgent. Good governance was identified at the World Summit on Sustainable Development as a critical factor for ensuring successful sustainable development. This book builds on the briefing papers that were presented at the Summit, taking further the discussions of the WEHAB agenda (Water, Energy, Health, Agriculture and food, and Biodiversity - the five international priority sectors highlighted by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan). This is a unique offering on the role and reform of global institutions and processes, raising issues that have previously been neglected in international discussions.

Book Financing Innovation and Sustainable Development in Africa

Download or read book Financing Innovation and Sustainable Development in Africa written by Steve Kayizzi-Mugerwa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book derives from a symposium held at Cornell University in April 2014. The symposium explored development financing, which has become an important area of policy discussion in Africa and other developing areas in recent years. Using multifaceted and multidisciplinary analytical approaches, it considers the role of the banking system, the stock market, credit access, external aid, and sovereign wealth funds in the evolving development finance architecture. Further, the volume looks at China’s role as an aid donor, the impact of BRICs partnerships in South Africa, the role of NEPAD in mobilizing resources for infrastructure development, and the links between law, trade, and regional integration. The study concurs with previous analyses that greater access to credit by the poor represents the most effective way of fighting poverty and raising the standards of living in Africa. Cornell’s Institute for African Development and the African Development Bank were cosponsors of the 2014 symposium.

Book Health Diplomacy in Africa

Download or read book Health Diplomacy in Africa written by Humphrey Ngala Ndi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to project diplomacy as an unavoidable instrument for monitoring, prevention and control of health and disaster risks among African countries. The book advocates health cooperation in Africa at a time when pandemics are recurrent. Outside of the WHO, many countries, even within regional groupings have not actively pursued health cooperation. We intend this book to provide the basis for advocating the inclusion of health diplomacy in the curricula of the training of the African diplomat with the hope to stimulate gradual policy shifts in foreign ministries, regional groupings, and the African Union.

Compiled by leading African and international experts, this book presents the science and strategies of modern drug discovery. It explores how the use of natural products and traditional medicines can benefit from conventional drug discovery approaches, and proposes solutions to current technological, infrastructural, human resources, and economic challenges, which are presented when attempting to engage in full-scale drug discovery. Topics addressed are varied; from African medicinal plants to marine bioprospecting, pharmacogenetics and the use of nanotechnology. This book brings together for the first time a collection of strategies and techniques that need to be considered when developing drugs in an African setting. It is an unprecedented and truly international effort, highlighting the remarkable effort made so far in the area of drug discovery research by African scientists, and scientists from other parts of the world working on African health problems.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the proceedings and outcomes of the “Expert workshop on local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management” convened in Abbassa, Egypt, from 3 to 5 December 2023. The workshop brought together acknowledged aquafeed experts from African countries, governmental agencies, universities, development organizations, private industry and farmers. The workshop was jointly organized by the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) and WorldFish Egypt and hosted by the WorldFish Centre in Abbassa, Egypt. The workshop objectives were to: i) exchange and share knowledge of the use of local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management; ii) showcase technological advances and innovations in local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management; iii) identify country-specific challenges and issues in local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management; iv) identify national and regional needs for technical assistance and capacity building on local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management; and v) recommend strategies to address identified development priorities, knowledge products on local alternative ingredients, aquafeed supply and feeding management. The workshop was divided into an overview, country presentations, technical and producer sessions. The country presentation session included presentations from Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. The farmers’ experiences were presented by small farmers from Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and Sierra Leone and experiences from Egyptian aquafeed industries. Following a general plenary discussion, the participants identified seven primary issues that currently constrain aquafeed production and feeding management in African aquaculture, namely: i) limited access to information on alternative feed ingredients (availability and accessibility); ii) poor feed preparation, processing, handling and storage at the farm level; iii) inadequate monitoring of on-farm feeding and farm performances; iv) inadequate investment and operating capitals for small-scale feed producers and farmers; v) inadequate knowledge and skills of farmers and extension workers in improved farm-made feed production, feeding management and farm performances; vi) poor feed quality and availability; and vii) lack of appropriate legal and policy frameworks required for sustainable aquaculture development including quality aquafeed manufacturing. Recommendations were proposed and classified under four categories: i) governance, ii) research and development, iii) capacity building, and iv) value chain.
