Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neonatal Formulary provides comprehensive guidance on the safe use of the drugs prescribed during pregnancy and commonly given to babies during labour and delivery, as well as during lactation and the first year of life. Treating the journey from pregnancy to parenthood as a continuous event, the new edition contains updated information on how the drugs affect both mother and baby. The first part of the book focuses on drug storage, drug licensing, and drug prescribing. In addition, it explains to why the metabolism of drugs differs in premature and sick infants, and why the practice of extrapolating doses from adult studies is unsafe. Patient safety, excipients, and therapies that affect drugs are also covered. Part 2 consists of monographs for over 250 drugs that may find use in the neonatal unit, and possibly outside it. Each monograph is divided into sections covering use, pharmacology, treatment, drug interactions or other administration, information, supply and administration, and references. The monographs are evidence-based and include links to the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and national guidelines. The third part presents information on additional drugs, and groups of drugs, that are often taken by mothers during pregnancy, labour, or during breast feeding. The drugs discussed in this section all affect the foetus or infant. Containing far more detail than is available in the British National Formulary for Children, and with additional online material featuring updates related to specific drugs and dosing, Neonatal Formulary is an essential guide for neonatologists, neonatal nurses, hospital pharmacists, obstetric staff, advanced nurse practitioners and for all health care professionals caring for pregnant women and their infants in the first year of life.

Book Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives

Download or read book Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-06-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.

Book Essay on the Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

Download or read book Essay on the Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome written by Oliver Tumbo and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Medicine - Other, , language: English, abstract: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) can be described as a problem or condition prevalent in newborn children who have been exposed to addictive prescription or illegal drugs while they were developing in their mother’s wombs (Queensland Maternity and Neonatal Clinical, 2010). The condition often results after the mother of an unborn child uses opiate or narcotic drugs for example heroin, oxycodone, methadone, codeine or buprenorphine. The condition has many adverse effects on the newborn child. The condition shares similar symptoms and may be confused easily with other diseases prevalent in children (Matic, 2008). However, various tests help to diagnose the condition. The diagnosis of the condition mainly depends on a study of the kind of drugs that the mother used, and the same drug may be used in the treatment process (MacMullen, Dulski, & Blobaum, 2014). More research on the NAS condition is vital in today’s world where drug and substance abuse among expectant women is on the increase. The number of cases reported with such conditions globally is on the rise. Thus, more research is needed to show the various factors that can lead to the condition.

Book Safe and Effective Medicines for Children

Download or read book Safe and Effective Medicines for Children written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-10-13 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act (BPCA) and the Pediatric Research Equity Act (PREA) were designed to encourage more pediatric studies of drugs used for children. The FDA asked the IOM to review aspects of pediatric studies and changes in product labeling that resulted from BPCA and PREA and their predecessor policies, as well as assess the incentives for pediatric studies of biologics and the extent to which biologics have been studied in children. The IOM committee concludes that these policies have helped provide clinicians who care for children with better information about the efficacy, safety, and appropriate prescribing of drugs. The IOM suggests that more can be done to increase knowledge about drugs used by children and thereby improve the clinical care, health, and well-being of the nation's children.
