Book A 6 GW NEODYMIUM GLASS LASER

Download or read book A 6 GW NEODYMIUM GLASS LASER written by M. P. Vanyukov and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 6-GW neodymium glass laser with a simple phototropic Q-switch is described. The laser consists of three cylindrical rods in series, each 250 mm long and 45 mm in diameter. Each rod is placed in a multielliptic reflector and is pumped by six direct flashlamps. The external cavity consists of one 99.6%-reflective dielectric mirror and a Q-switch placed between the first and second rods. The Q-switch consists of a cell made of two plane-parallel (error less than 1 min of arc) glass plates joined optically through a 1-cm-thick glass ring. The cell is filled with a polymethine-dye solution to a concentration at which the solution is 99% reflective at 1.06 micrometer. At maximum pumping energies, single 100-120-j, 20-nanosec pulses were obtained. By increasing the pumping energy or by diluting the absorber solution, two or more pulses could be generated. In the case of two-pulse operation (50-80 microsec. repetition frequency), the total output was 200 j. The use of a phototropic liquid switch and large-diameter neodymium glass rods resulted in energy and power densities of 6 j/sq cm and 0.3-0.4 Gw/sq cm, respectively.

Book A 1 GW NEODYMIUM GLASS LASER

Download or read book A 1 GW NEODYMIUM GLASS LASER written by A. A. Mak and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The system consists of a master laser and a two-stage laser amplifier. The master-laser head comprises a neodymium glass rod 20 mm in diameter and 260 mm long, an IFP-5000 2-kj flashlamp, and a cylindrical pump reflector. The amplifier heads are identical and in each case the active rod is bathed in an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite to retard uv-induced aging of crystals and to reduce thermal stresses. The output of the 100-cm-long resonator was passed through a 30% reflective stack and the Q-switching was done by means of a rotating prism (30,000 rpm) and a plane-parallel plate with an end reflector which also served as an angular selector. The master laser operated in the free-running mode at an efficiency of 3.5%, generating 140-150 MW 70 nanosec pulses with a 3-5 min of arc beam divergence. Seventy nanosec 500 MW and 1 GW pulses were obtained at the first and second (output) stages, respectively, for an 80 MW input. (Author).

Book Optimization of Nd Glass Lasers with Phosphate Laser Glass

Download or read book Optimization of Nd Glass Lasers with Phosphate Laser Glass written by J. M. McMahon and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report the impact of phosphate base neodymium glass on laser design for fusion experiments is examined. It is shown that in an optimum amplifier this glass solves the self-focusing problems for pulses longer than 250 ps. Large systems (> 100 kJ) appear possible with this glass with overall efficiencies on the order of 0.2% for nanosecond pulses. For short pulses this glass gives at least a factor of five improvement over silicate systems in terms of cost per terawatt. Phosphate optimized rod amplifier systems are also examined, and found far less desirable than the disc system, both in cost and complexity.

Book Design and Performance of a Multiterawatt Subpicosecond Neodymium Glass Laser

Download or read book Design and Performance of a Multiterawatt Subpicosecond Neodymium Glass Laser written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broad-band solid-state materials such as Nd:Glass, Ti:Sapphire and Alexandrite, exhibit saturation fluences on the order of Joules/cm2. Unfortunately, the large stored energy density of these solid state materials cannot be accessed directly with short pulses due to beam filamentation caused by the intensity dependent refractive index. This limits the power density in a solid state amplifier to only a few GW/cm2. The application of chirped- pulsed amplification (CPA) to solid-state lasers circumvents this problem. With the CPA technique, a chirped, comparatively long pulse is produced and compressed to a short pulse only after amplification. The intensity in the amplifiers is kept below the level for significant nonlinear phase distortion. In this paper, we present the design and performance of a small scale Nd:Glass laser system employing chirped-pulse amplification to produce subpicosecond pulses exhibiting peak power exceeding 10 TW. 30 refs., 2 figs.

Book Neodymium Laser Glass Improvement Program

Download or read book Neodymium Laser Glass Improvement Program written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigation of the influence of various glass constituents on laser properties continued. A systematic investigation confirmed that lifetime varies inversely with Na2O concentration and directly with K2O, Rb2O and Cs2O concentrations. A new laser cavity was constructed for the comparison of thresholds of laser rods made from small experimental glass melts. A system was set up for making a direct experimental determination of the quantum efficiency of the fluorescence process to check the calculated values. Measurement was made on a Ba crown glass containing 2 wt.% Nd2O3. A program is underway to survey existing glasses and/or to design new ones which meet this requirement. (Author).

Book Operating Characteristics of a Neodymium Glass Laser

Download or read book Operating Characteristics of a Neodymium Glass Laser written by N. V. Grevtsev and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dependence of operation characteristics of the Nd glass laser on the frequency of pumping pulses was followed experimentally. The investigation was carried out on the active element of a LPS-28-2 Nd glass. An ISPT-6000 pumping lamp was used. The active element and the pumping lamp were cooled with a given aqueous solution at 20 degrees. Other experimental settings were: distance between mirrors of the resonator 210 mm; a given frequency of pumping pulses; duration of the pulses 1-8 mu sec. A dependence of the radiation energy on the frequency of pumping pulses exhibits a max., a position of which is practically independent of the pumping energy. For the laser described, a maximum radiation energy in the periodic regime of operation was observed, when the pumping energy was set to the value corresponding to the threshold pumping energy in the single-frequency regime. (Author).
