Book Neo Victorianism and Sensation Fiction

Download or read book Neo Victorianism and Sensation Fiction written by Jessica Cox and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first full-length study of the relationship between neo-Victorianism and nineteenth-century sensation fiction. It examines the diverse and multiple legacies of Victorian popular fiction by authors such as Wilkie Collins and Mary Elizabeth Braddon, tracing their influence on a range of genres and works, including detective fiction, YA writing, Gothic literature, and stage and screen adaptations. In doing so, it forces a reappraisal of critical understandings of neo-Victorianism in terms of its origins and meanings, as well as offering an important critical intervention in popular fiction studies. The work traces the afterlife of Victorian sensation fiction, taking in the neo-Gothic writing of Daphne du Maurier and Victoria Holt, contemporary popular historical detective and YA fiction by authors including Elizabeth Peters and Philip Pullman, and the literary fiction of writers such as Joanne Harris and Charles Palliser. The work will appeal to scholars and students of Victorian fiction, neo-Victorianism, and popular culture alike.

Book Calls and Responses

Download or read book Calls and Responses written by Tim A. Ryan and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive, groundbreaking study, Tim A. Ryan explores how American novelists since World War I have imagined the institution of slavery and the experience of those involved in it. Complicating the common assumption that authentic black-authored fiction about slavery is starkly opposed to the traditional, racist fiction (and history) created by whites, Ryan suggests that discourses about American slavery are -- and have always been -- defined by connections rather than disjunctions. Ryan contends that African American writers didn't merely reject and move beyond traditional portrayals of the black past but rather actively engaged in a dynamic dialogue with white-authored versions of slavery and existing historiographical debates. The result is an ongoing cultural conversation that transcends both racial and disciplinary boundaries and is akin to the call-and-response style of African American gospel music. Ryan addresses in detail more than a dozen major American novels of slavery, from the first significant modern fiction about the institution -- Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind and Arna Bontemps's Black Thunder (both published in 1936) -- to recent noteworthy novels on the topic -- Edward P. Jones's The Known World and Valerie Martin's Property (both published in 2003). His insistence upon the necessity of interpreting novels about the past directly in relation to specific historical scholarship makes Calls and Responses especially compelling. He reads Toni Morrison's Beloved not in opposition to a monolithic orthodoxy about slavery but in relation to specific arguments of controversial historian Stanley Elkins. Similarly, he analyzes William Styron's The Confessions of Nat Turner in terms of its rhetorical echoes of Frederick Douglass's famous autobiographical narrative. Ryan shows throughout Calls and Responses how a variety of novelists -- including Alex Haley, Octavia Butler, Ishmael Reed, Margaret Walker, and Frances Gaither -- engage in a dynamic debate with each other and with such historians as Herbert Aptheker, Charles Joyner, Eugene and Elizabeth Genovese, and many others. A substantially new account of the development of American slavery fiction in the last century, Calls and Responses goes beyond merely exalting the expression of black voices and experiences and actually reconfigures the existing view of the American novel of slavery.

Book excerpt: Happily Hippie: Meet a Modern Ethnicity rethinks hippies. Hippiedom didnt die; rather, as with other outgroups, it became socially invisible. Happily Hippie argues that the Counterculture is a 50-year-old ethnicity and explains Hippiedoms ethnogenesis. Well learn how anti-Hippie demagoguery has warped American politics, how the War on Drugs is largely about persecuting Hippie-America and how todays legalization movement is really about Hippie-America fighting for social equality. Happily Hippie documents the Countercultures many accomplishments, including inventing the Personal Computer; it estimates over 30 million Hippie-Americans and shows readers crude demographic maps of Hippie-America. We look at Hippies in philanthropy, Hollywood, sports, various arts, new medicine, the natural-foods industry, the Green movement and around the globe. Well see how stereotypes of Hippies echo those of other minorities, explore Hippie self-esteem issues, look at Hippie generational transfer and do some fun media analysis. Well also consider the need for a Hippie-American Ethnic Organization and how we might begin one. If youre Hippie, if youve ever been Hippie, read this book. It will change your head; it can change this world.

Book Derrida

  • Author : Benoît Peeters
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2013-08-27

  • Pages : 462 pages

Download or read book Derrida written by Benoît Peeters and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Jacques Derrida (1930–2004) tells the story of a Jewish boy from Algiers, excluded from school at the age of twelve, who went on to become the most widely translated French philosopher in the world – a vulnerable, tormented man who, throughout his life, continued to see himself as unwelcome in the French university system. We are plunged into the different worlds in which Derrida lived and worked: pre-independence Algeria, the microcosm of the École Normale Supérieure, the cluster of structuralist thinkers, and the turbulent events of 1968 and after. We meet the remarkable series of leading writers and philosophers with whom Derrida struck up a friendship: Louis Althusser, Emmanuel Levinas, Jean Genet, and Hélène Cixous, among others. We also witness an equally long series of often brutal polemics fought over crucial issues with thinkers such as Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, John R. Searle, and Jürgen Habermas, as well as several controversies that went far beyond academia, the best known of which concerned Heidegger and Paul de Man. We follow a series of courageous political commitments in support of Nelson Mandela, illegal immigrants, and gay marriage. And we watch as a concept – deconstruction – takes wing and exerts an extraordinary influence way beyond the philosophical world, on literary studies, architecture, law, theology, feminism, queer theory, and postcolonial studies. In writing this compelling and authoritative biography, Benoît Peeters talked to over a hundred individuals who knew and worked with Derrida. He is also the first person to make use of the huge personal archive built up by Derrida throughout his life and of his extensive correspondence. Peeters’ book gives us a new and deeper understanding of the man who will perhaps be seen as the major philosopher of the second half of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: From its origins in 1930s Marxism to its unprecedented influence on George W. Bush's administration, neoconservatism has become one of the most powerful, reviled, and misunderstood intellectual movements in American history. But who are the neocons, and how did this obscure group of government officials, pundits, and think-tank denizens rise to revolutionize American foreign policy?Political journalist Jacob Heilbrunn uses his intimate knowledge of the movement and its members to write the definitive history of the neoconservatives. He sets their ideas in the larger context of the decades-long battle between liberals and conservatives, first over communism, and now over the war on terrorism. And he explains why, in spite of their misguided policy on Iraq, they will remain a permanent force in American politics.

So she caught the Eurostar to Brussels and kept going, through Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, the former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria, to Sirkeci Station in Istanbul, arriving thirteen weeks to the day after leaving England. Over 6,000 miles by train, bus and boat, never leaving the surface of the planet; staying with friends or finding lodgings on-line; rarely knowing exactly where she was going to be more than a day or two in advance.
