Book Neither Bomb Nor Bullet

Download or read book Neither Bomb Nor Bullet written by Andrew Boyd and published by Monarch Books. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the warzone that Nigeria has become, Archbishop Ben Kwashi has survived three assassination attempts. A brutal assault on his wife, Gloria, drove him to his knees - to forgive and find the strength to press on. Islamist militants have Nigeria in their sights. These are the terrorists who kidnapped hundreds of Christian schoolgirls - who have vowed to turn Africa's most populous nation into a hard-line Islamic state. Their plan is to drive the Christian minority from the north by kidnapping, bombing and attacking churches. Plateau State is on the frontline. But holding that line against Boko Haram, and standing firm for the Gospel, is Ben Kwashi, the Anglican Archbishop of Jos. In Jos, churches have been turned into fortresses and Archbishop Ben now conducts more funerals than weddings and baptisms put together. He has survived three assassination attempts and his wife has been brutally attacked. Yet his faith grows ever more vibrant. He has adopted scores of orphans who live in his home, including many who are HIV positive. And the challenge of his message - to live for the Gospel even in the face of terror - has never been so timely.

Book excerpt: ECPA Christian Book of the Year Christianity Today Book of the Year Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Finalist IVP Readers' Choice Award How can we trust God in the dark? Framed around a nighttime prayer of Compline, Tish Harrison Warren, author of Liturgy of the Ordinary, explores themes of human vulnerability, suffering, and God's seeming absence. When she navigated a time of doubt and loss, the prayer was grounding for her. She writes that practices of prayer "gave words to my anxiety and grief and allowed me to reencounter the doctrines of the church not as tidy little antidotes for pain, but as a light in darkness, as good news." Where do we find comfort when we lie awake worrying or weeping in the night? This book offers a prayerful and frank approach to the difficulties in our ordinary lives at work, at home, and in a world filled with uncertainty.

Book excerpt: Jeff Rozelaar was born into a Jewish family and raised in an East End bombarded by Hitler’s V2s. Fortunate enough to be one of the lucky survivors of the Nazi menace, he was able to play in the streets among the resultant debris with his schoolmates. Jeff spent his formative years in the heart of a truly multicultural community. The streets of East London provided a vivid playground for the youngster; mixing with the many colourful characters and hustlers on Petticoat Lane, taking a job with an uncle as a bookie’s clerk for pocket money and attending the Brady Club – a place for local youngsters to go dancing, play football, and explore the mysteries of the opposite sex. Jeff’s family consisted of Nancy, the proverbial domineering Jewish mother, his somewhat naive father Henry and sister Bernice. Among the wider family circle were numerous quarrelsome aunts, a trio of Communist cousins and the prolifically fertile grandmother Rebecca who lived in a council flat next to a communal rubbish chute. Most of the family were law-abiding citizens, but a few were collared by officialdom, and one by the infamous Krays. This vivid account of growing up is told with passion and humour. The captivating anecdotes within, both poignant and entertaining, are immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the East End in the post-war era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Paul looks to Illuminate basic faith, tradition and practice, offering direction to those who may feel dizzy in a world where cultural, political and religious landscapes seem to be changing by the minute. Paul covers such hot button topics as divorce, homosexuality, and abortion . . .[also] the Trinity . . .good and bad angels, the Sabbath, . . .tattooing and piercing . . . The author has an informal, conversational style that makes primarily for easy reading.” —Blueink Review Also discussed are the great “stories” of Adam and Eve, Noah’s Ark, The Red Sea, the Feeding of 5000. How do these stories and lessons apply to today’s society? Can the Bible really teach modern-day individuals about abortion, immorality, sexual indiscretion, and political progress? Can it still guide us to become better people, better parents, and better citizens? In Abused, Obscure, or Misused Scripture, these questions and more are answered through an engaging and diligent investigation and study into some of the most commonly misunderstood and misinterpreted Bible passages. From its ancient stories to its lessons of morality and character, a detailed and faithful analysis of these scriptures reveals how God’s Word—in any time and for any place—maintains a deep and abiding relevance. By guiding readers through the Word with careful attention to the language and different translations and versions of the Bible, author Steven Paul helps fellow believers both better understand and embrace fully the underlying meanings and applications of the sometimes exciting, sometimes confounding, but always inspiring scriptures.

Book London Bombed Blitzed and Blown Up

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to being bombed, London is unique. Although it cannot claim to be the most bombed capital city in terms of the weight of explosive detonated it has endured the most varied and unrelenting attack since the discovery of explosives. From the first Irish Republican bomb in 1867, London and its population have been under almost constant assault. Terrorism features in virtually every decade from the 1860s to the present and has caused much damage, particularly during the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, by far the greatest destruction was from the air. The Zeppelin and Gotha bomber raids in the First World War being but a foretaste of what would happen in the Second. Then the capital was devastated, firstly by the LuftwaffeÕs aeroplanes and then HitlerÕs ÔvengeanceÕ weapons, the V-1s and V-2s. After the Second World War the bombers returned, in the form of the IRA and then the homegrown terrorists of 2005. Written by a former Explosives Officer who worked for the Counter Terrorism Command of the Metropolitan Police, this is the most comprehensive record of BritainÕs capital under attack that has ever been compiled.

Drawing on his vast experience as a commander during the first Gulf War, and in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Northern Ireland, General Rupert Smith gives us a probing analysis of modern war. He demonstrates why today’s conflicts must be understood as intertwined political and military events, and makes clear why the current model of total war has failed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other recent campaigns. Smith offers a compelling contemporary vision for how to secure our world and the consequences of ignoring the new, shifting face of war.

Book Principal conclusions and overall assessment of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry

Download or read book Principal conclusions and overall assessment of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry written by Bloody Sunday Inquiry and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this Inquiry was to investigate the circumstances that led to loss of life in connection with the civil rights march in Londonderry on Sunday 30th January 1972. Thirteen civilians were killed by Army gunfire on the day, which has generally become known as Bloody Sunday. The report outlines the background to Bloody Sunday and then describes the events of the day: the civil rights march; the outbreak of rioting in William Street; early firing by the Army wounding two persons; a shot fired by a member of the Official IRA; the launch of the arrest operation by Support Company of the 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (1 PARA); and subsequent events at various locations in the Bogside. The Inquiry concludes that the soldiers of 1 PARA, in the mistaken belief that republican paramilitaries were responding in force to their arrival, reacted by losing their self-control. There was a serious and widespread loss of fire discipline among the soldiers, causing the deaths of thirteen people and injury to a similar number, none of whom was posing a threat of causing death or serious injury. Bloody Sunday strengthened the IRA, increased nationalist resentment and hostility towards the Army and exacerbated the violent conflict of the years that followed. It was a tragedy for the bereaved and wounded and a catastrophe for the people of Northern Ireland.
