Book Partition s First Generation

Download or read book Partition s First Generation written by Amber H. Abbas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO), that became the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 1920 drew the Muslim elite into its orbit and was a key site of a distinctively Muslim nationalism. Located in New Dehli, the historic centre of Muslim rule, it was home to many leading intellectuals and reformers in the years leading up to Indian independence. During partition it was a hub of pro-Pakistan activism. The graduates who came of age during the anti-colonial struggle in India settled throughout the subcontinent after the Partition. They carried with them the particular experiences, values and histories that had defined their lives as Aligarh students in a self-consciously Muslim environment, surrounded by a non-Muslim majority. This new archive of oral history narratives from seventy former AMU students reveals histories of partition as yet unheard. In contrast to existing studies, these stories lead across the boundaries of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Partition in AMU is not defined by international borders and migrations but by alienation from the safety of familiar places. The book reframes Partition to draw attention to the ways individuals experienced ongoing changes associated with “partitioning”-the process through which familiar spaces and places became strange and sometimes threatening-and they highlight specific, never-before-studied sites of disturbance distant from the borders.

Book Breaking Free of Nehru

Download or read book Breaking Free of Nehru written by Sanjeev Sabhlok and published by Breaking Free of Nehru. This book was released on 2008 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses the impact of Nehruvian socialism on freedom in India. It reflects on India s post-independence experience and finds that India needs to move well beyond socialist paradigms towards freedom and innovation if it wishes to retrieve its status as a great nation. It then traces the causes of India`s political and bureaucratic corruption, its poverty, and its large, illiterate population. The book then proposes numerous ways to transform India`s governance thorough competitive, freedom-based, solutions. Solutions recommended range from a re-write of the Indian Constitution in order to make it simpler and clearly focused on freedom, to the radical restructure of the Indian public services based on modern public sector reforms across the world. It advocates state funding of elections, raising the salaries of politicians significantly, freeing the labour market, imposing carbon taxes on pollution, seeking compensatory payments from developed countries for their prior carbon emissions, and complete privatisation of school and university education. It argues that India can, and should, aspire to be the world s best in everything it does. I believe that no Indian should settle for anything less than that.

From the time of its inception, democracy in India has been dubbed 'miraculous' by the world's media, and its elections as a spectacular exercise in human management. In Ballot, Rasheed Kidwai takes us through his pick of seminal elections that have shaped Indian democracy both at the centre and in select states. Highlighting the unique challenges faced by a country that adopted universal adult franchise at the very outset, profiling personalities who have triggered ground-shifts, and analysing the causes and consequences of key electoral episodes, he traces the very evolution of India's democratic process. Combining insightful commentary and colourful anecdotes, Ballot provides a brief, incisive examination of India's most momentous elections.

Book Writing imperial histories

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew S. Thompson
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2016-05-16
  • ISBN : 152611254X
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book Writing imperial histories written by Andrew S. Thompson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book appraises the critical contribution of the Studies in Imperialism series to the writing of imperial histories as the series passes its 100th publication. The volume brings together some of the most distinguished scholars writing today to explore the major intellectual trends in Imperial history, with a particular focus on the cultural readings of empire that have flourished over the last generation. When the Studies in Imperialism series was founded, the discipline of Imperial history was at what was probably its lowest ebb. A quarter of a century on, there has been a tremendous broadening of the scope of what the study of empire encompasses. Essays in the volume consider ways in which the series and the wider historiography have sought to reconnect British and imperial histories; to lay bare the cultural expressions and registers of colonial power; and to explore the variety of experiences the home population derived from the empire.

Book India s Open Economy Policy

Download or read book India s Open Economy Policy written by Jalal Alamgir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-11-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first major exploration of Indian political economy using a constructivist approach. Arguing that India’s open-economy policy was made, justified, and continued on the basis of the idea of openness more than its tangible effect, the book explains what sustained the idea of openness, what philosophy, interpretations of history, and international context gave it support, justification, and persuasive force. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary and historical sources, and going as far back as the 19th century, the author reconstructs how Indian policymakers have interpreted economic priorities, perceived success and failure, and evaluated the destiny of their nation. By the 1990s, their imperatives increasingly highlighted a sense of rivalry, especially with China, and globalism, a desire to play a strong role in world affairs. The book shows how a sense of nationalist urgency was created through globalism and rivalry, allowing policymakers to privilege international needs over domestic political demands, replace economic independence with interdependence as a priority, and ensure that the broad basis of India’s openness could not be challenged effectively even though certain policies faced severe opposition. This book will be of interest to those working on International Political Economy, Globalization, Economic History, Public Policy, and South Asian politics.
