Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two decades on from 9/11, the Taliban now control more than half of Afghanistan. Few would have foreseen such an outcome, and there is little understanding of how Afghans living in Taliban territory have navigated life under insurgent rule. Based on over 400 interviews with Taliban and civilians, this book tells the story of how civilians have not only bargained with the Taliban for their survival, but also ultimately influenced the course of the war in Afghanistan. While the Taliban have the power of violence on their side, they nonetheless need civilians to comply with their authority. Both strategically and by necessity, civilians have leveraged this reliance on their obedience in order to influence Taliban behaviour. Challenging prevailing beliefs about civilians in wartime, Negotiating Survival presents a new model for understanding how civilian agency can shape the conduct of insurgencies. It also provides timely insights into Taliban strategy and objectives, explaining how the organisation has so nearly triumphed on the battlefield and in peace talks. While Afghanistan's future is deeply unpredictable, there is one certainty: it is as critical as ever to understand the Taliban--and how civilians survive their rule.

Book Psychological Aspects of Crisis Negotiation

Download or read book Psychological Aspects of Crisis Negotiation written by Thomas Strentz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are many books on crisis negotiation, most of the current literature focuses on the history and mechanics of this dynamic process, leaving out critical elements that are required for a successful encounter with a hostage-taker or other malfeasant. Psychological Aspects of Crisis Negotiation, Second Edition explores the methods and strategies for confronting the nine types of subjects typically encountered in hostage/suicide sieges by correctional staff and law enforcement crisis negotiators. Drawn from articles published by Thomas Strentz while serving at the FBI Academy* along with written versions of lectures developed and delivered since his retirement, the book highlights psychological dynamics of negotiations as they apply to the negotiator, the hostage, and the subject. It discusses the predictors of surrender versus the need for a tactical intervention and examines the phases of a hostage crisis and the changing focus as the crisis develops. Referencing historical events such as The Bay of Pigs invasion and the Challenger and Columbia incidents, the book demonstrates how faulty group decision making can spell tragedy. Enhanced with case studies to put the material into context, this second edition also includes new chapters on the first responder, hostage survival, and the Islamic belief system and culture. Steeped in sage advice from a national expert, this volume arms those tasked with confronting dangerous offenders with the knowledge and tools they need to subvert disaster and ensure the preservation of human life. *Articles were reviewed by the Academy Editorial/Review Board and approved by the Bureau for publication.

Book excerpt: Nobody loves conflict. Whether we’re negotiating a salary increase or trying to settle on which in-laws to spend the holidays with, there’s a lot at stake in any dispute beyond the points being argued over. While both sides are pushing for the result they want, there’s a very good chance that someone will feel unjustly treated, hurt or embarrassed along the way. Sometimes one or both parties lose their cool completely, doing damage to the relationship or on their own reputation. Even formal negotiations with nothing personal at stake can feel fraught with risk to the people involved. Many individuals go through life avoiding conflict and dreading confrontation. And yet, there is no escaping the need to negotiate with family members, employers, business partners and tradespeople. What if you could approach your next difficult conversation with genuine confidence that you can reach the best possible resolution without losing face or damaging your relationship with your counterpart? Confidence is not the same thing as self-esteem or bravado, according to psychologist and negotiation expert Hal Movius. To handle all of life’s negotiations more effectively and with less stress, Movius says, we need to develop confidence along three key dimensions: Mastery: The ability to plan for and to deploy optimal behaviours during a disagreement or negotiation Poise: The capacity to manage emotions in the moment Judgment: The knowledge to avoid the most common traps that befall negotiators – and the rest of us – as we think about the problem at hand and the other side’s behaviors. In Resolve: Negotiating Life’s Conflicts with Greater Confidence Movius provides effective tools to boost confidence in all three of these critical areas so you can be more effective in resolving any type of conflict, from spontaneous flare-ups at home to planned business negotiations. Drawing on decades of research in interpersonal psychology and recent advances in social neuroscience, Movius blends science-backed insight with practical techniques developed in his 25-year career as a mediator, negotiation trainer and coach. Readers will learn: That genuine confidence can be acquired, regardless of personality traits How to transform all sorts of conflicts, including influence challenges, into negotiations in order to resolve them more satisfactorily Strategies to use when the conflict is about beliefs or behaviors How to think like a negotiator, with strategies for planned conversations as well as spontaneous conflict How to recognize and respond to difficult emotional and manipulative tactics in counterparts How to cope with emotional flooding if you feel yourself becoming flustered in a dispute How to recognize common errors in judgment that we make before, during and after negotiations What drives the differences in how women and men negotiate The book also shares advice on bargaining with counterparts who act as if they don’t care about the relationship (and indeed may not); negotiating on behalf of others; and settling differences with those we are close to. Whether you negotiate for a living or only in your personal life, Resolve is the only guide you need to get safely and comfortably to the other side of any dispute.

Book excerpt: We have all heard of ways that could lead to a post apocalyptic world. A zombie outbreak that rapidly takes over the world, or some other mutant strain of a seemingly harmless virus that spreads through the air killing millions of people. Whether it be a series of natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, hurricanes, etc), or a pandemic threat spreads throughout the world, or even a picture perfect textbook zombie outbreak, the prospect is frightening and yet alluring. The possibilities for the "end of the world" don't just stop there. Nuclear war is a very serious and a very real threat to our civilization, as well as an asteroid smashing into the earth. Regardless of what could ultimately bring civilization to its knees, it is a very real and frightening prospect. Surviving the worldwide disaster is just the beginning. After it's all over, we are left with the pieces of what once was and we must learn how to adapt to a whole new world. We take for granted a lot of what we have, technology, government, prepackaged food, not to mention the surplus of food, retail stores, clothing, and so much more. All of these things will be gone in this new world. Even gasoline will oxidize and become useless. Maybe not right away, but over time all of the resources left from civilization as we know it now, will dwindle and eventually vanish. The only way to survive is to acquire skills in which compensate for these losses. There are two enormous factors that people seem to overlook when they think about the "end of the world". We currently live in a world where we have forgotten how to feed ourselves, all of our nutrients and vitamins are included in many of our store bought food thanks to the FDA. Maybe people think hunting will be they're golden ticket, however, many of the necessary nutrients and vitamins that we consume on a daily basis will not be met by a meat diet. Kids are no longer taught what foods give us what nutrients and minerals, or how much of each we need daily. Without key nutrients like iron, iodine, vitamin A, zinc, etc, you're in for some frightening consequences such as anemia, rashes, and decreased functioning of the immune system. This brings me to the second factor, disease. We take for granted our access to vaccines and medications. Without these being readily available many people will succumb to disease and infections. These factors and more only perpetuate the need to learn how to barter and negotiate. Trading things you have for things you need is a basic concept that has been around for years. By knowing the ins and outs of this seemingly lost art you will have the advantage in a post-apocalyptical world. Do you need antibiotics for a nasty cut or seeds to start farming? Trade for it. The subjects this book will cover include the following:* The Importance of Learning Bartering/Negotiating Techniques* How to Negotiate A Successful and Peaceful Trade* The Most Valuable Bartering Items to Stockpile* The Risks of Conducting Business In A World Without Rules* Negotiation/Bartering Mistakes to Avoid By knowing how and what to barter and trade it will open up possibilities and ensure a much greater chance at surviving this cold and quiet new world. Learning this simple skill will not only help you survive but thrive in a seemingly hopeless grid down scenario.

Book Negotiating and Drafting Contract Boilerplate

Download or read book Negotiating and Drafting Contract Boilerplate written by Tina L. Stark and published by ALM Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource serves to educate lawyers and business professionals on how to draft the many types of "boilerplate" provisions, a legal term that refers to the standardized, one-size-fits-all provisions of a contract. Each chapter tackles one of 20 provisions and analyzes why it is important, the key legal and business issues raised, and how to draft the provision to suit a particular transaction. Such analysis not only helps readers better understand how to draft these provisions in their contracts, but also helps them better understand the other party's process.

Book excerpt: Bartering is a skill that you will have to learn if you want to survive and thrive in a post-apocalyptic world. One of the hardest parts of living following a nationwide disaster is that the banking system will be crippled and the economy will collapse even worse than the Great Depression or the Great Recession. No matter how much cash you have in your hand, it will be useless because no one will want it.On the other hand, everyone will want basic physical items that will help them survive for just a few days longer or at least help make their lives easier, such as food, medicine, ammunition, alcohol, coffee, seeds, baking soda, soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, or spices. These are the items that you will need to stockpile not only for yourself, but for trading with others as well.If the economy ever collapses and a bartering system emerges, the only way you will be able to gain more of an item you are running low of is if you have another valuable item to give in return. You must learn proper bartering and negotiation strategies to ensure a fair trade so you won't get ripped off. That's exactly what this book is about. In this book, we will outline and discuss in-detail the top twenty bartering strategies (plus a bonus strategy at the end) and with some real world examples of how business people use these strategies every day to help illustrate them for you.Examples of the strategies and tips this book will talk about include:- The top items you need to stockpile for bartering - Why bartering is harder than you think- How to decide where and when the negotiation will take place- Building rapport with the other party before the bartering begins- Increasing the value of what you are trading- Decreasing the value of what the other party is trading - How to control the flow of the negotiation - Using psychology to sway the other party if they are undecided or leaning no- Having an exit strategy in place If you currently have limited knowledge on negotiating and bartering with strangers and you want to expand this knowledge, this book will be a must read.Perhaps the best part of this book is you don't only have to use the negotiating strategies you're about to learn after a disaster. You can also easily utilize them in your everyday life, such as when buying a new car or house, as well.

Book Negotiating the New START Treaty

Download or read book Negotiating the New START Treaty written by Rose Gottemoeller and published by Cambria Press. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rose Gottemoeller, the US chief negotiator of the New START treaty-and the first woman to lead a major nuclear arms negotiation-delivers in this book an invaluable insider's account of the negotiations between the US and Russian delegations in Geneva in 2009 and 2010. It also examines the crucially important discussions about the treaty between President Barack Obama and President Dmitry Medvedev, and it describes the tough negotiations Gottemoeller and her team went through to gain the support of the Senate for the treaty. And importantly, at a time when the US Congress stands deeply divided, it tells the story of how, in a previous time of partisan division, Republicans and Democrats came together to ratify a treaty to safeguard the future of all Americans. Rose Gottemoeller is uniquely qualified to write this book, bringing to the task not only many years of high-level experience in creating and enacting US policy on arms control and compliance but also a profound understanding of the broader politico-military context from her time as NATO Deputy Secretary General. Thanks to her years working with Russians, including as Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, she provides rare insights into the actions of the Russian delegation-and the dynamics between Medvedev and then-Prime Minister Vladmir Putin. Her encyclopedic recall of the events and astute ability to analyze objectively, while laying out her own thoughts and feelings at the time, make this both an invaluable document of record-and a fascinating story. In conveying the sense of excitement and satisfaction in delivering an innovative arms control instrument for the American people and by laying out the lessons Gottemoeller and her colleagues learned, this book will serve as an inspiration for the next generation of negotiators, as a road map for them as they learn and practice their trade, and as a blueprint to inform the shaping and ratification of future treaties. This book is in the Rapid Communications in Conflict and Security (RCCS) Series (General Editor: Dr. Geoffrey R.H. Burn) and has received much praise, including: “As advances in technology usher in a new age of weaponry, future negotiators would benefit from reading Rose Gottemoeller’s memoir of the process leading to the most significant arms control agreement of recent decades.” —Henry Kissinger, former U.S. Secretary of State “Rose Gottemoeller’s book on the New START negotiations is the definitive book on this treaty or indeed, any of the nuclear treaties with the Soviet Union or Russia. These treaties played a key role in keeping the hostility between the United States and the Soviet Union from breaking out into a civilization-ending war. But her story of the New START negotiation is no dry academic treatise. She tells with wit and charm the human story of the negotiators, as well as the critical issues involved. Rose’s book is an important and well-told story about the last nuclear treaty negotiated between the US and Russia.” —William J. Perry, former U.S. Secretary of Defense “This book is important, but not just because it tells you about a very significant past, but also because it helps you understand the future.” — George Shultz, former U.S. Secretary of State
