Book excerpt: This study of the media portrayals of Romanians in Italy is an investigation in the discursive constitution of power and its instrumentalization in maintaining the status quo. This analysis speaks to the ways in which nation, ethnicity and race become differently accented as they are being reappraised in the context of the newly enlarged European Union. This dissertation analyzes the conditions of possibility and intelligibility of a discourse on Romanian crime in Italy in the early 2000s. Special focus is placed on the ways in which the structural imperatives of the media interlock with signification processes to maintain extant power configurations. This research adds to the discussion on the nexus power-knowledge by investigating how the creation of a social problem and its implications in terms of social identity reinscribe the idea of nation and citizenship in the discussion about inclusion and social solidarity. This in-depth study of the workings of identity in a shifting social and political environment criticizes blind spots in the operation of (supposedly) inclusive media while looking beyond individualized discrimination and concentrating on structural imperatives. This research also contributes to existing scholarship in that it draws attention to inherently conservative processes operating seamlessly in democratic polities that serve to exclude and disenfranchise emergent groups. By showing how the Romanian-centered moral panic starting in Italy in late 2007 forms part of a larger project of recuperating and glorifying an endangered Italian identity, this work lays bare the symbolic roots and the social construction of an acute problem with very 'real', material consequences in present-day Italy, explaining and debunking them. This project is a case study that complicates current understandings of the opportunities and pitfalls of EU integration. As it deconstructs media narratives stressing the traces of silenced voices, this work helps to better conceptualize the current axes of discrimination and the vulnerabilities within the social fabric of the European Union in view of further enlargement and ever greater internal mobility.

Book excerpt: This book explores the effects of the global spread of English by reporting on a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study of the language attitudes, motivation and self-perceived English proficiency of youth in two Italian cities. Participant narratives highlight the far-reaching role that English plays on the performance and attainment of present and desired future selves, illustrate that English is understood not as singular but as plural and paradoxical, and reveal that English learners, who do not all accept the capital of ‘native’ speakers, utilize tactics to negotiate their position(s) with respect to their target language. On the one hand, by narrowing in on a specific population and drawing extensively on interview exchanges, this work provides readers with a nuanced depiction of the identities, milieu and learning experiences of English language learners in Italy. On the other hand, this level of detailed analysis gives insight into the understandings, construction of meaning and negotiations of language learners who need and want to acquire English, the global language, worldwide. Indeed, the issues and questions that are raised in this book, such as those concerning research approaches and the definitions assigned to key concepts, have profound implications on the research of English(es) today and can inform future directions in global English teaching.

Book excerpt: This thesis analyzes the identity politics (Hall 1990) and multiple discourses of being and becoming Italian Canadian among second/third generation Italian Canadian youth in Toronto. Using Giddens (1991) terms centre and periphery, this thesis investigates, firstly, the Italian Canadian/Italian centre(s)' various contradictory discourses on italianita (i.e., representations of italianness), definitions of the "right" forms of cultural and linguistic capital (Bourdieu 1977), and who can legitimately claim to be and become the "right" Italian Canadian. These local and transnational discourses produced across the Italian Canadian/Italian centre(s) define italianita and its spaces. The analysis shows how those dominating the Italian Canadian/Italian centre(s) essentialize italianita, use linguistic and cultural capital (i.e., Standard Italian, Italian culture and representations of present-day Italy) as a way of controlling who is included and excluded from the Italian Canadian/Italian worlds. Along the periphery, Italian Canadian groups reproduce and contest centre-discourses in order to redefine italianita and its spaces. Italian Canadian youth manoeuvre for access to forms of linguistic and cultural capital and positionings as legitimate possessors of such capital in order to tap into symbolic and material resources and the spaces of italianita across multiple worlds. Secondly, this thesis investigates those along the periphery: Italian Canadian youth organizations and other groups, and specifically how eight second/third generation Italian Canadian youths manage, negotiate and challenge identities (e.g., ethnicity, language, religion, gender and sexuality) through the discourses on self-identification, language, culture and italianita across and within discourse sites (e.g., home, university campus, university Italian language classrooms, peer group social sites and workplace) and multiple worlds (i.e., Italian Canadian, Canadian and Italian). In sum, this research uncovers the tensions and contradictions of what it means to be and become Italian Canadian across a multi-generational immigrant community that is undergoing change and re-analysis within a globalizing world. Critical ethnography and multiple field methods were used to explore the politics of identity. The data was analyzed using discourse analysis (Chouliaraki & Fairclough 1999), focusing on the discourse on language, culture and the representations of italianita and primarily examining content with references made to linguistic practices when they revealed social positionings.

The book offers a practical, manageable, and engaging form of qualitative research. In this pivotal work of action and discourse analysis, Riva Kastoryano draws on extensive fieldwork--including interviews with politicians, immigrant leaders, and militants--to analyze interactions between states and immigrants in France and Germany. Making frequent comparisons to the United States, she delineates the role of states in constructing group identities and measures the impact of immigrant organization and mobilization on national identity. Kastoryano argues that states contribute directly and indirectly to the elaboration of immigrants' identity, in part by articulating the grounds on which their groups are granted legitimacy. Conversely, immigrant organizations demanding recognition often redefine national identity by reinforcing or modifying traditional sentiments. They use culture--national references in Germany and religion in France--to negotiate new political identities in ways that alter state composition and lead the state to negotiate its identity as well. Despite their different histories, Kastoryano finds that Germany, France, and the United States are converging in their policies toward immigration control and integration. All three have adopted similar tactics and made similar institutional adjustments in their efforts to reconcile differences while tending national integrity. The author builds her observations into a model of ''negotiations of identities'' useful to a broad cross-section of social scientists and policy specialists. She extends her analysis to consider how the European Union and transnational networks affect identities still negotiated at the national level. The result is a forward-thinking book that illuminates immigration from a new angle.
