The text seeks to provide a structure and framework for conducting negotiations. Major topics include: Rapidly establishing rapport and a collaborative relationship; conducting crisis, biopsychosocial, and lethality assessments; identifying the major problems or crisis precipitants; exploring feelings and emotions; generating and exploring alternatives; developing and implementing an action plan, with follow-up; hostage situations as crisis negotiations; suicide and assault with danger to self and others; and barricaded subject situations. The real amalgam of the art and science of the field of crisis negotiation is knowledge in depth and its skillful, practical application in the aid of others. • Publisher : State University of New York Press

  • ISBN : 079149912X

Download or read book Speedy Disposition written by Thomas W. Church and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1992-11-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monetary incentives are increasingly seen as attractive alternatives to strict regulatory approaches for achieving objectives. This book examines one of the most ambitious attempts to use monetary incentives in the criminal justice system: New York City's $8.25 million Speedy Disposition Program (SDP). New York City officials introduced SDP as an incentive scheme to encourage the city's six District Attorneys to accelerate the disposition of those criminal cases that most contributed to the city's chronic jail overcrowding problem. Substantial financial rewards would be given to those DAs' offices that managed to dispose of their oldest felony cases, those cases involving "long-term detainees." The implementation of SDP in New York City — and the responses of the city's district attorneys to it — provides fascinating tales that teach much about innovation in criminal justice, about new approaches to court reform and delay reduction, and more generally, about the uses of monetary incentives as policy tools. Further, the program provides a rich source for analysis of the considerations that should go into the design of incentive programs, and into the contextual factors that argue for their applicability in other areas.

Book Politics and Plea Bargaining

    Book Details:
  • Author : Candace McCoy
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 1993-05
  • ISBN : 0812214331
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Politics and Plea Bargaining written by Candace McCoy and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 1993-05 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1982, California voters passed Proposition 8, promoted by supporters as the Victims' Bill of Rights, on the initiative ballot. In Politics and Plea Bargaining, Candace McCoy describes the political genesis of victims' rights legislation and the impact Proposition 8 has had on plea bargaining. Placing Proposition 8 in the context of earlier efforts to reform plea bargaining, McCoy explores the meaning of due process in the criminal courts. Emphasizing the concept of "publicness," the book suggests changes that would open the justice system to more public observation and explanation.
