Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racial equality was one of the most critical issues facing African Americans (black people) in the 21st century. Particularly, in the United States labor market, black people, in overwhelming comparison to Caucasians (white people), said that they were treated unfairly in their places of employment. The purpose of this study was to understand the complexities of racial inequality and develop a theoretical model of the constructs that predict perceptions that employees of color had about their workplace arenas in the following areas: respect & treatment, company effectiveness, the job itself, and teamwork & cooperation. Specifically, the researcher explored the following quantitative research questions: (1) to what extent are lack of employee recognition, lack of career opportunities, job dissatisfaction, company ineffectiveness, and high job turnover correlated to employees' race in Fortune 500 companies?; and (2) how do differences in the racial composition of teams influence teamwork and cooperation in Fortune 500 companies?A researcher-created questionnaire was utilized to collect study data. All study procedures took place using an online survey software - SurveyMonkey. The researcher used this online technology to facilitate an internet-based questionnaire and analyzed the collected data. The sample for this quantitative descriptive correctional study consisted of n = 502 with a return rate of 419 participants which is an acceptable return rate of 83.5%, utilizing a stratified random sampling selection process. The hypothesis testing from this study discovered that there was a statistically significant difference for all six hypotheses. In conjunction with statistically testing the six rejected null hypotheses, a detailed analysis was provided to analyze two specific research questions in this study. The number of data pairs for the research question were statistically significant (correlated) to African Americans' perceptive variables in Fortune 500 companies. This study can contribute to organizational leadership by helping corporations better understand the relationship between the imposed unfair treatment, company ineffectiveness, and lack of respect & employee recognition of African American Fortune 500 professionals and the fewer opportunities for advancement, job dissatisfaction, negative perceptions of the job itself, and high turnover rates amongst blacks.

Book Choices Values and Frames

Download or read book Choices Values and Frames written by Daniel Kahneman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-09-25 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the definitive exposition of 'prospect theory', a compelling alternative to the classical utility theory of choice. Building on the 1982 volume, Judgement Under Uncertainty, this book brings together seminal papers on prospect theory from economists, decision theorists, and psychologists, including the work of the late Amos Tversky, whose contributions are collected here for the first time. While remaining within a rational choice framework, prospect theory delivers more accurate, empirically verified predictions in key test cases, as well as helping to explain many complex, real-world puzzles. In this volume, it is brought to bear on phenomena as diverse as the principles of legal compensation, the equity premium puzzle in financial markets, and the number of hours that New York cab drivers choose to drive on rainy days. Theoretically elegant and empirically robust, this volume shows how prospect theory has matured into a new science of decision making.

  • Author : Jesse J. Prinz
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2004-08-12

Download or read book Gut Reactions written by Jesse J. Prinz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-12 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gut Reactions is an interdisciplinary defense of the claim that emotions are perceptions in a double sense. First of all, they are perceptions of changes in the body, but, through the body, they also allow us to literally perceive danger, loss, and other matters of concern. This proposal, which Prinz calls the embodied appraisal theory, reconciles the long standing debate between those who say emotions are cognitive and those who say they are noncognitive. The basic idea behind embodied appraisals is captured in the familiar notion of a "gut reaction," which has been overlooked by much emotion research. Prinz also addresses emotional valence, emotional consciousness, and the debate between evolutionary psychologists and social constructionists.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 1461506832
  • Pages : 282 pages

Download or read book The Psychology of Secrets written by Anita E. Kelly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On an MTV special aired in 2000, young interviewees were asked to confess the worse thing they were ever told during a romantic breakup. One person tearfully responded "that I suck in bed. " More recently, an acquaintance of mine admitted to his new girlfriend that he "has a mean streak. " She decided not to date him after that. Another memorable and painful example of openness occurred years ago when I served as a member of a suicide intervention team. I was called to a very disturbing scene in an upscale neighborhood to console a woman who was threaten ing to take her life on the lawn in front of her children. Her husband had just confessed his long-term affair to her that morning and she felt that her world was coming apart. Fortunately, she did not take her life but was left with the humiliation of haVing her neighbors know about her private troubles. The question these examples bring to mind is, "Why do people so often reveal potentially stigmatizing personal information to others?" The reader probably has an intuitive answer to this question already. It can seem like such a burden-even torture-to keep secrets from other people. Hiding such things as feelings of discontent from a boyfriend or girlfriend, violations of the law from close friends, and indiscretions from employers can be alienating. People want others to know them; therefore they often end up disclosing self-incriminating information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. William Glasser offers a new psychology that, if practiced, could reverse our widespread inability to get along with one another, an inability that is the source of almost all unhappiness. For progress in human relationships, he explains that we must give up the punishing, relationship–destroying external control psychology. For example, if you are in an unhappy relationship right now, he proposes that one or both of you could be using external control psychology on the other. He goes further. And suggests that misery is always related to a current unsatisfying relationship. Contrary to what you may believe, your troubles are always now, never in the past. No one can change what happened yesterday.

Book Elsevier s Dictionary of Psychological Theories

Download or read book Elsevier s Dictionary of Psychological Theories written by J.E. Roeckelein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-01-19 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In attempting to understand and explain various behaviour, events, and phenomena in their field, psychologists have developed and enunciated an enormous number of ‘best guesses’ or theories concerning the phenomenon in question. Such theories involve speculations and statements that range on a potency continuum from ‘strong’ to ‘weak’. The term theory, itself, has been conceived of in various ways in the psychological literature. In the present dictionary, the strategy of lumping together all the various traditional descriptive labels regarding psychologists ‘best guesses’ under the single descriptive term theory has been adopted. The descriptive labels of principle, law, theory, model, paradigm, effect, hypothesis and doctrine are attached to many of the entries, and all such descriptive labels are subsumed under the umbrella term theory. The title of this dictionary emphasizes the term theory (implying both strong and weak best guesses) and is a way of indication, overall, the contents of this comprehensive dictionary in a parsimonious and felicitous fashion. The dictionary will contain approximately 2,000 terms covering the origination, development, and evolution of various psychological concepts, as well as the historical definition, analysis, and criticisms of psychological concepts. Terms and definitions are in English. *Contains over 2,000 terms covering the origination, development and evolution of various psychological concepts *Covers a wide span of theories, from auditory, cognitive tactile and visual to humor and imagery *An essential resource for psychologists needing a single-source quick reference
