  • Author : J.L. Reissig
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-12-11
  • ISBN : 146159698X
  • Pages : 439 pages

Download or read book Microbial Interactions written by J.L. Reissig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbiology has undergone a number of metamorphoses in its relatively brief existence. It has been in approximate succession, morphology, epidemiology, biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. It is also becoming a significant parcel of cell surface studies. The one embodiment which has remained elusiv- particularly for bacteriology - is the taxonomic one. This may have been a blessing in disguise because it encouraged microbiologists to deal with the general rather than the particular; promoting a search for unitary explanations, in the manner of Kluyver and van Niel, long before anyone knew about the universality of the genetic code, or could trace the genealogy of enzymes from the study of amino acid substitutions. . This volume is predicated on the idea that deep analogies underly the mech anisms of cellular interaction, and therefore belongs in the unitary tradition of microbiology. It occupies itself with a wide variety of micro-organisms, considering them from vantage points of considerable diversity, ranging from taxonomic irreverence to keen evolutionary awareness, and is concerned with areas which have developed independently of each other.

Book The Enzymes of Biological Membranes

Download or read book The Enzymes of Biological Membranes written by Anthony Martonosi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first edition of The Enzymes of Biological Membranes. published in four volumes in 1976, we collected the mass of widely scattered information on membrane-linked enzymes and metabolic processes up to about 1975. This was a period of transition from the romantic phase of membrane biochemistry, preoccupied with conceptual developments and the general properties of membranes, to an era of mounting interest in the specific properties of membrane-linked enzymes analyzed from the viewpoints of modem enzymology. The level of sophistication in various areas of membrane research varied widely; the structures of cytochrome c and cytochrome b were known 5 to atomic detail, while the majority of membrane-linked enzymes had not even been isolated. In the intervening eight years our knowledge of membrane-linked enzymes ex panded beyond the wildest expectations. The purpose of the second edition of The Enzymes of Biological Membranes is to record these developments. The first volume describes the physical and chemical techniques used in the analysis of the structure and dynamics of biological membranes. In the second volume the enzymes and met abolic systems that participate in the biosynthesis of cell and membrane components are discussed. The third and fourth volumes review recent developments in active transport, oxidative phosphorylation and photosynthesis.

Book Mechanisms and Regulation of Carbohydrate Transport in Bacteria

Download or read book Mechanisms and Regulation of Carbohydrate Transport in Bacteria written by Milton H. Saier and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanisms and Regulation of Carbohydrate Transport in Bacteria reviews the developments in the study of the mechanisms and regulation of carbohydrate transport in prokaryotic organisms. The book presents the progress made in the understanding of transport and regulation of carbohydrates in bacteria in the molecular level. Aspects on the important structural and topographical features of several sugar permeases in Escherichia coli are elucidated; the energy-coupling processes are clearly delineated for most (but not all) types of bacterial carbohydrate permease systems; and mechanistic details of the translocation processes are proposed. Molecular biologists, microbial biochemists, and cell biologists will find the book a good source of information.

Book Microbial Iron Metabolism

Download or read book Microbial Iron Metabolism written by J. B. Neilands and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial Iron Metabolism: A Comprehensive Treatise provides a comprehensive treatment of microbial iron metabolism. It aims to contribute to an increased understanding of the path of iron in microbial species and, eventually, in the plant and animal. The book is organized into five parts. Part I describes some features of iron and its function in the microbial world. These include a historical sketch of the recognition of the importance of iron in cellular physiology; a description of certain physical properties of ferrous and ferric ions; and a list of various known biocoordination derivatives grouped by ligand atom. Metabolism under iron-limited conditions is also examined. Part II presents studies on iron transport, biosynthesis, and storage in microorganisms. Part III examines iron enzymes and proteins, including ferredoxin, rubredoxin, nitrogenase, and hydrogenase. Part IV deals with reactions of inorganic substrates. Part V presents a study on the role of bacterial iron metabolism in infection and immunity.
