Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder Mystery! Detective series! Crime-drama! Homicide Detective Lyle Odell returns once again in a new adventure! In fictional and very gritty, Mohawk City in upstate New York, the respected and prominent, intellectual, and popular educator, Doctor Rochester Gilding, is the victim of a horrific homicide. In his own home, on a seemingly calm and placid autumn Saturday afternoon, a brutal killer slashes his throat, and then, in a fit of rage, plunges a military knife into the skull of Doctor Gilding. To offer up the ultimate challenge to Detective Lyle Odell, the victim lived a hidden life. On the surface, Doctor Rochester Gilding was wealthy, popular, intellectual, professional, handsome, and charismatic, but when Lyle Odell begins to poke around in the victim’s life, he finds that Doctor Gilding lived a hidden life full of darkness and questionable behavior. Since Doctor Gilding lived in a tight-knit and crowded community of townhouses, and he apparently offended everyone equally, the potential suspects are limitless. Homicide Detective Lyle Odell assembles his elite crime-fighting team to track down the ruthless killer. With the aid of Sergeant George Grundy, Captain Connor Moore, Crime Scene Investigation genius, Sergeant Oliver Crump, and with newly recruited Officer Miles Bradford and with the strategic addition of a few brave civilians, Odell goes on the hunt to bring the killer to justice before he can kill once again. When the initial trail leads to a series of dead-end of clues, Detective Odell moves to the offensive in order to lure the killer out of his lair. That move takes a tragic twist, as Odell’s best friend and crime-fighting companion, the faithful Patrol Sergeant George Grundy, displays his heroism in the heat of battle and it has tragic results. Amid tragedy, a driven and focused, Homicide Detective Lyle Odell will stop at nothing to bring the killer to justice. This Detective Lyle Odell adventure has everything a crime-drama reader could want in a detective novel; a thrilling and complicated storyline, beautiful women, multiple suspects and plotlines and Detective Odell and the team, amongst the murder and mayhem, while poking around for mysterious clues. Tragedy! Suspense! Thrills! Plucked out of the pages of the novel “O'Malley” by his creator, Homicide Detective Lyle Odell proved to be a hugely popular character with readers. In “O’Malley,” the good detective helps the principal character solve the mysteries of his past and the brutal homicide of a fellow police officer. The character proved to so popular with readers that Paul John Hausleben created a series of novels starring the eccentric, systematic, hard-drinking, gumshoe Homicide Detective Lyle Odell. Here in this latest Detective Lyle Odell novel, the author weaves an exciting murder mystery and crime drama mixed with his usual unforgettable characters, and proves once again why Odell’s creator earned the title of “The Master Storyteller.” Grab your copy today!

Book International Religious Rights and Standards

Download or read book International Religious Rights and Standards written by Cometan and published by The Religious Recognition Project. This book was released on 2023-09-23 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal finding of the doctoral research of Cometan (a.k.a. Brandon Reece Taylorian) was that the ways governments, both authoritarian and democratic, use their powers to recognise religions and beliefs and register religious or belief organisations is negatively impacting conditions of freedom of religion or belief. Cometan explored the range of recognition and registration issues plaguing religious freedom and other human rights and discovered that there lacks a definitive set of international standards to address some of the granular topics that are causing registration procedures in particular to become onerous and thus impedimental to the free and legal exercise of religion or belief. Cometan's International Religious Rights and Standards (IRRS) document presents a series of standards for how nation states ought to develop their recognition and registration policies and practices to remain FoRB-compliant. The standards of the IRRS document have been created based on the results of Cometan's PhD research, the thesis for which is titled Religious Freedom and State Recognition of Belief. Cometan's intention is that the IRRS document will encourage international organisations like the OSCE and the United Nations as well as national and international human rights courts such as the ECtHR to establish more detailed and country-specific guidelines to address the breath of registration issues and the recognition issues that often worsen such issues.

Download or read book The Courtesan s Arts written by Martha Feldman and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2006-03-23 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Courtesans, hetaeras, tawaif-s, ji-s--these women have exchanged artistic graces, elevated conversation, and sexual favors with male patrons throughout history and around the world. In Ming dynasty China and early modern Italy, exchange was made through poetry, speech, and music; in pre-colonial India through magic, music, chemistry, and other arts. Yet like the art of courtesanry itself, those arts have often thrived outside present-day canons and modes of transmission, and have mostly vanished without trace. The Courtesan's Arts delves into this hidden legacy, while touching on its equivocal relationship to geisha. At once interdisciplinary, empirical, and theoretical, the book is the first to ask how arts have figured in the survival or demise of courtesan cultures by juxtaposing research from different fields. Among cases studied by writers on classics, ethnomusicology, anthropology, and various histories of art, music, literature, and political culture are Ming dynasty China, twentieth-century Korea, Edo and modern Japan, ancient Greece, early modern Italy, and India, past and present. Refusing a universal model, the authors nevertheless share a perception that courtesans hover in the crevices of space, time, and practice--between gifts and money, courts and cities, subtlety and flamboyance, feminine allure and masculine power, as wifely surrogates but keepers of culture. What most binds them to their arts in our post-industrialized world of global services and commodities, they find, is courtesans' fragility, as their cultures, once vital to civilizations founded in leisure and pleasure, are now largely forgotten, transforming courtesans into national icons or historical curiosities, or reducing them to prostitution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection bundles all 3 titles of the exciting Song of Seare series into one e-book for a great value! #1 Oath of the Brotherhood: In a kingdom where the Old Ways hold fast and a man’s worth lies entirely in his skill with the sword, Conor Mac Nir is a scholar, a musician, and a follower of the forbidden Balian faith: problematic for any man, but disastrous for the son of the king. When Conor is sent as a hostage to a neighboring kingdom, he never expects to fall in love with the rival king’s sister, Aine. Nor does he suspect his gift with the harp (and Aine’s ability to heal) touches on the realm of magic. Then his clan begins a campaign to eliminate all Balians from the isle of Seare, putting his newfound home in peril and entangling him in a plot for control of the island that has been unfolding since long before his birth. Only by committing himself to an ancient warrior brotherhood can Conor discover the part he’s meant to play in Seare’s future. But is he willing to sacrifice everything—even the woman he loves—to follow the path his God has laid before him? #2 Beneath the Forsaken City: Conor and Aine have barely escaped Seare with their lives. Conor knows he must return to find the harp that could end the Red Druid’s reign of terror, but in the midst of their escape, he and Aine are torn apart once more. Surrounded by despair and thrown into as much danger as they left behind, Conor and Aine must cling to the whispers of Comdiu’s plans for them and the homeland that depends on their survival. But at what cost? Will they learn to depend on Comdiu completely? Or will they give up hope? #3 The Sword and the Song: The shadow of war. A clash of brothers. A terrible sacrifice. In the face of powerful darkness, who will prevail? The island of Seare is at war. The Red Druid is gathering strength and power to stand against Conor, Eoghan, and the brotherhood. But there is strife within the brotherhood as well. Eoghan still refuses to claim his rightful rule, and the resulting conflict creates an uncomfortable distance between him and Conor. When Conor leaves to find the key to defeating the Red Druid, Eoghan and Aine worry he will succumb to the danger. They set out on their own mission to defeat the Red Druid through Aine’s magical gifts. But nothing—and no one—is as it seems.

This open access book presents discussions on risks and mitigation strategies for these technologies including biosecurity, or the potential of synthetic biology technologies and processes to be deliberately misused for nefarious purposes. The book presents strategies to prevent, mitigate, and recover from 'dual-use concern' biosecurity challenges that may be raised by individuals, rogue states, or non-state actors. Several key topics are explored including opportunities to develop more coherent and scalable approaches to govern biosecurity from a laboratory perspective up to the international scale and strategies to prevent potential health and environmental hazards posed by deliberate misuse of synthetic biology without stifling innovation. Book Racial Union

  • Author : Julie Lavonne Novkov
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press

Download or read book Racial Union written by Julie Lavonne Novkov and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-09-11 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2001, the state of Alabama opened a referendum on its long-standing constitutional prohibition against interracial marriage. A bill on the state ballot offered the opportunity to relegate the state's antimiscegenation law to the dustbin of history. The measure passed, but the margin was alarmingly slim: more than half a million voters, 40 percent of those who went to the polls, voted to retain a racist and constitutionally untenable law. Julie Novkov's Racial Union explains how and why, nearly forty years after the height of the civil rights movement, Alabama struggled to repeal its prohibition against interracial marriage---the last state in the Union to do so. Novkov's compelling history of Alabama's battle over miscegenation shows how the fight shaped the meanings of race and state over ninety years. Novkov's work tells us much about the sometimes parallel, sometimes convergent evolution of our concepts of race and state in the nation as a whole. "A remarkably nuanced account of interlocked struggles over race, gender, class and state power. Novkov's site is Alabama, but her insights are for all America." ---Rogers M. Smith, Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science, University of Pennsylvania "Hannah Arendt shocked Americans in the 1950s by suggesting that interracial intimacy was the true measure of a society's racial order. Julie Novkov's careful, illuminating, powerful book confirms Arendt's judgment. By ruling on who may be sexually linked with whom, Alabama's courts and legislators created a racial order and even a broad political order; Novkov shows us just how it worked in all of its painful, humiliating power." ---Jennifer L. Hochschild, Henry LaBarre Jayne Professor of Government, Professor of African and African American Studies, and Harvard College Professor
