Download or read book Forging Capitalism written by Ian Klaus and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vice is endemic to Western capitalism, according to this fascinating, wildly entertaining, often startling history of modern finance. Ian Klaus’s Forging Capitalism demonstrates how international financial affairs in the nineteenth century were conducted not only by gentlemen as a noble pursuit but also by connivers, thieves, swindlers, and frauds who believed that no risk was too great and no scheme too outrageous if the monetary reward was substantial enough. Taken together, the grand deceptions of the ambitious schemers and the determined efforts to guard against them have been instrumental in creating the financial establishments of today. In a story teeming with playboys and scoundrels and rich in colorful and amazing events, Klaus chronicles the evolution of trust through three distinct epochs: the age of values, the age of networks and reputations, and, ultimately, in a world of increased technology and wealth, the age of skepticism and verification. In today’s world, where the questionable dealings of large international financial institutions are continually in the spotlight, this extraordinary history has great relevance, offering essential lessons in both the importance and the limitations of trust.
Download or read book Marshal Mart Duggan s Leadville written by Robert V. Hunt Jr. and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eddie Foy, the famous vaudevillian who toured the West during the late 1800s, was qouted as saying that compared to Leadville, Colorado, Dodge City resembled a Sunday School. The 10,200 - foot high "Magic City" was one of the wildest mining camps of the era. This book is a semi-biographical history of Martin "Mart" Duggan, who was Leadville City marshal for two and nearly three terms before he met his end at the hands of gambling pals. But Leadville was also home to numerous other fascinating characters, not the least of whom was John Henry "Doc" Holliday, who had his last gunfight in Leadville in 1884. They all came to Leadville: the confidence men, the gamblers, the stage robbers, and the "soiled doves" though they could have never known it at the time, being primarily concerned with survival, these individuals in their totality combined to create one of the most intriguing camps in the Wild West. And the site of much of the action that made Leadville unique occurred on State Street, the half mile long stretch of gambling dens, saloons, and bawdy houses that rivaled any red light district then in existence. Even today, when State Street has been renamed Second Street, one can imagine Mart Duggan, Doc Holliday, and Tombstone's Johnny Tyler, to name only a few walking westward from Harrison Avenue to the east-west mecca of State Street. Gazing upward they would see majestic Mount Massive directly in front of them. What a view! What a mining camp! Marshal Mart Duggan's Leadville - the Wild West at its most fascinating.

At thirty-two, Dev is “mostly retired” from Raines Investigations, content to run operations from his sprawling Arizona home. But Dev has never been able to say no to a beautiful woman, so when Lark Delaney comes to him for help, the former U.S. Army Ranger from Wind Canyon gets back in the game. Lark is sexy, successful and dedicated to tracking down the baby girl her sister gave up for adoption. It should be a straightforward case, but it’s not long before Dev uncovers a shady adoption ring and worse—the child’s parents have been murdered and the little girl has been taken. As the case grows dangerous and Lark needs him more than ever, Dev can’t ignore his growing attraction for her. He also can’t trust his judgment with women or the emotions he’s long-since buried. But there’s a chance, if he gets this right and saves Lark’s niece, that he’ll end up saving himself, too.

Download or read book The Pizzutos written by Franco La Monica and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a semibiographical novel of the Pizzutos, a unique and funny couple from Mamaroneck, New York. It recalls their lives and how close they always were in physical proximity from each other, until destiny united them in 1980. They side swiped each other at the fork of destiny's road and fused into the Pizzutos. Hysterically comical in parts, this book evolves into many separate recollections of what actually happened to them since they moved into the home that they resided in for the last thirty years. As destiny would have it, they were childless. The two cats in this book can be found buried in the backyard alongside another cat called Goldie and other pets, including goldfish and other critters. All the names have been changed, but all their relatives know who they are. Lots of laughs. This book is basically a sequel to the author's last novel called Little Jimmy. Anyhow, it has all the flavors of very odd situational comedy, embedded in nonconventional spirituality. In addition, it reveals how destiny has its way with us all. Read it by candlelight, preferably on a rocking chair in front of a lit fireplace. If one does not have a fireplace, they can tuck themselves in bed, read themselves to sleep, and begin to dream dreams just like the Pizzutos did. If one likes to laugh and still enjoys a good easy read, this novel contains both qualities!
Download or read book The Prankster and the Conspiracy written by Adam Gorightly and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Book excerpt: One of the 1960s counterculture's most fascinating characters was Kerry Wendell Thornley -- a writer, philosopher, Zen dishwasher, enlightened prankster, and, possibly, an Oswald double with disturbing ties to the Kennedy assassination. A lifelong provocateur, Thornley was linked to many of the fringe elements of the time. He helped create the spoof religion called the Discordian Society and its tract, the Principia Discordia. He coined the term "paganism" to describe various nature religions. And he befriended Robert Anton Wilson, inspired the Illuminatus, and gave his anarchic support to the Bavarian Illuminati, a brilliant prank.
