Book Southeast Asian Water Environment 1

Download or read book Southeast Asian Water Environment 1 written by S. Ohgaki and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia has undergone rapid commercial and industrial development over the past half century, which continues to bring economic stability and prosperity to its inhabitants. The combined impacts of population growth, urbanization, and industrialization continue to put pressure on the natural resources and the environment. At the same time, globalization is another momentous challenge for the region. Southeast Asian megacities are some of the most dynamic and diverse regions, which are playing a key role in achieving global sustainability. Twelve out of nineteen megacities of the world are located in the region, where highly developed areas coexist with poorly developing areas where large economic growth is expected. The poor quality of the living standards of the latter creates many environmental problems that are major threats to the inhabitants of the region. The Southeast Asian environment has been degraded by the release of industrial and domestic wastes, agricultural and aquacultural chemicals, and pollutants from automobiles. It suffers from water-related disasters, Tsunami, floods, typhoons, etc. In order to deal with these issues an integrated approach from the inhibitants, governments and researchers is essential. The environmental threats arising from the increasing population, overuse of natural resources, industrialization, urbanization, and natural disasters present ever increasing challenges to pursuing sustainable development of the region. Many developed countries such as Japan have experiences of dealing with severe environmental pollution and this publication is the result of building an academic network among researchers of related fields from different regions to exchange information. This book will be an invaluable source of information for all those concerned with achieving global sustainability within the water environment in developing regions, including researchers, policy makers, NGOs and NPOs.

Book Bioremediation Technologies

Download or read book Bioremediation Technologies written by Robert L. Irvine and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-01-08 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE INTRODUCTION This three-volume series, Bioremediation: Principles and Practice, provides state of the art description of advances in pollution treatment and reduction using biological means; identify and address, at a fundamental level, broad scientific and technological areas that are unique to the subject or theme and that must be understood if advances are to be made; and provide a comprehensive overview of new developments at the regulatory, desk-top, bench-scale, pilot scale, and full-scale levels. The series covers all media-air, water, and soil/sediment-and blends the talents, knowledge, and know-how of academic, industrial, governmental, and international contributors. The series addresses the removal of both hazardous and nonhazardous contaminants from the liquid, solid, and gas phase using biological processes. This includes the biological treatment of wastes of municipal and industrial origin; bioremediation of leachates, soils, and sediments; and biofiltration for contaminated gases.

Book Current Developments in Biotechnology and Bioengineering

Download or read book Current Developments in Biotechnology and Bioengineering written by Sunil Kumar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-06-16 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic Perspectives in Solid Waste and Wastewater Management explores conventional and advanced biotechnologies for waste management, including socio-economic aspects, techno-economic feasibility, models and modeling tools, and a detailed life-cycle assessment approach in solid waste (SW) and wastewater (WW). These innovative technologies are highly applicable to current real-world situations. The enormous increase in the quantum and diversity of SW and WW - including waste materials generated due to human activity and their potentially harmful effects on the environment and public health - have led to increasing awareness about an urgent need to adopt novel technologies for appropriate management of both SW and WW. While there is an obvious need to minimize the generation of wastes and to reuse and recycle them, the technologies for managing such wastes can play a vital role in mitigating problems. Besides recovery of substantial energy, these technologies can lead to a considerable reduction in the overall waste quantities requiring final disposal, which can be better managed for safe disposal in a controlled manner while meeting pollution control standards. Outlines appropriate technologies for solid waste and wastewater management systems and their applications Presents and evaluates the Best Available Technology (BAT) and includes global case studies Provides methods for evaluating the way to use appropriate technological systems to develop the best technically and economically feasible projects worldwide Offers an excellent resource for university students to use for their research and dissertations

Download or read book International Labour Law Reports written by Zvi H. Bar Niv and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1997-09-30 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "International Labour Law Reports" (ILLR) is a series of annual publications of labour law judgments by the highest courts in a number of jurisdictions. "ILLR" is a particularly useful resource for judges, labour law practitioners, industrial relations specialists, and students who seek ready access to authoritative information of a comparative nature on problems arising in the field of labour law and industrial relations. "ILLR" accompanies each reprinted judgement with Headnotes and, in practically all cases, an Annotation which sets forth, among other things, - the legal issues involved, - the basic facts of the case (if not included in the judgment itself), - the relevant statutory provisions and judicial precedents, - the labour law and industrial relations context in which the case arose, and - the significance of the judgment in the development of the law. "ILLR" provides the reader with factual information not coloured by the personal views of the annotators. As a rule, judgments are printed in extenso; the editors summarize or cut portions of judgments that are purely technical or only of marginal interest. "ILLR" also provides a list of cases both by jurisdiction and by subject matter. As a result, this work offers the reader a concise, readily-accessed statement of law. Volume 16 covers the period 1 October 1995 to 30 September 1996. (Volume 15 covers the period 1 October 1994 to 30 September 1995 and is also available, as are all earlier volumes.)
