The first part of the paper discusses the health issues that arise as a result of exposure to specific viruses, namely the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus. This review establishes that the consequences of exposure are significant. The prevalence of the hepatitis B virus in the community, despite there being recognised preventative treatments, makes it responsible for a number of deaths among health care workers. The HIV is less widespread, but its consequences are dramatic, and at the present moment, there is no known cure or available vaccination. There is a moral and legal requirement that persons suffering from these conditions are given medical and hospital treatment, and as such, those who provide that treatment are at risk of infection because of needlestick injury. The second part of the paper examines the level of compliance by health care workers, and the efficacy of universal precautions - a series of procedures designed to reduce the risk of infection from working with possibly infected individuals. One aspect of universal precautions deals with reducing the risk of exposure to sharps and potential needlestick injuries. The author concurs...." -- Abstract.
