Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to dwell within and enjoy the bliss of Nonduality, Peace of Mind is required. This abiding Peace is predicated upon the attainment of equanimity and contentment, and both of those are dependant upon fulfilling one’s desires in the dharma. But there is one onerous presence that can, almost effortlessly, undo the practitioner’s crucial spiritual practice and spoil a sincere aspirant’s bid for Peace leading to Enlightenment, and that is the insinuation of work, or action. According to Swami Vivekananda, “Work is the midday sun that is burning the very vitals of humanity. It is necessary for a time, but in the end is a morbid dream.” This is even more true in today’s humming multiple marketplaces and office buildings, whose teeming masses rush, like a raging springtime river in spate, to gain everything that the world can offer — all of it empty and unfulfilling in the end. Activity can never bring about liberation either, but is more often the cause for bondage of the soul to matter and nature. As Shankara has reminded us, “Moksha can never be gained by thousands of asanas, or by hundreds and thousands of breathing exercises, nor by millions of acts; nor does wealth and progeny bring it.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thousand-year-old Sanskrit classic the Bhagavatapurana, or "Stories of the Lord," is the foundational source of narratives concerning the beloved Hindu deity Krishna. For centuries pious individuals, families, and community groups have engaged specialist scholar-orators to give week-long oral performances based on this text. Seated on a dais in front of the audience, the orator intones selected Sanskrit verses from the text and narrates the story of Krishna in the local language. These sacred performances are thought to bring blessings and good fortune to those who sponsor, perform, or attend them. Devotees believe that the narratives of Krishna are like the nectar of immortality for those who can appreciate them. In recent years, these events have grown in number, scale, and popularity. Once confined to private homes or temple spaces, contemporary performances now fill vast public arenas such as sports stadiums, and attract live audiences in the tens of thousands while being simulcast around the world. In Seven Days of Nectar, McComas Taylor applies the tools of performance theory to uncover the factors that contribute to the explosive growth of this tradition. His innovative approach, which draws on close textual reading, philology, and ethnography, casts new light on the ways in which narratives are experienced as authentic and transformative and, more broadly, how texts shape societies.

She has done in again. Another book on its way to be a movie, we hope. The book is a definite page turner with incredible characters. Some characters are likeable, some are loved, and well, let's just say that you can be the judge. It's an amazing book that has me still thinking about it. I would love to have been a fly in the story. No, not a fly, but, a beautiful butterfly! The scenery is so beautiful and the fruits are the sweetest smelling and tasting. I love the book very much, I can't wait to read the next one. The author s so talented I wish I could have just a spec of her imagination. To write a book is hard enough, but, then to make it come to life. Wow!" Anne

Book Information Processing in Social Insects

Download or read book Information Processing in Social Insects written by Claire Detrain and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claire Detrain, Jean-Louis Deneubourg and Jacques Pasteels Studies on insects have been pioneering in major fields of modern biology. In the 1970 s, research on pheromonal communication in insects gave birth to the dis cipline of chemical ecology and provided a scientific frame to extend this approach to other animal groups. In the 1980 s, the theory of kin selection, which was initially formulated by Hamilton to explain the rise of eusociality in insects, exploded into a field of research on its own and found applications in the under standing of community structures including vertebrate ones. In the same manner, recent studies, which decipher the collective behaviour of insect societies, might be now setting the stage for the elucidation of information processing in animals. Classically, problem solving is assumed to rely on the knowledge of a central unit which must take decisions and collect all pertinent information. However, an alternative method is extensively used in nature: problems can be collectively solved through the behaviour of individuals, which interact with each other and with the environment. The management of information, which is a major issue of animal behaviour, is interesting to study in a social life context, as it raises addi tional questions about conflict-cooperation trade-oft's. Insect societies have proven particularly open to experimental analysis: one can easily assemble or disassemble them and place them in controllable situations in the laboratory.

Book Methods for Risk Assessment of Transgenic Plants

Download or read book Methods for Risk Assessment of Transgenic Plants written by Gösta Kjellsson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is a continuation of the work initiated in Autumn 1991, which resulted in the book, published by Birkhauser Verlag in 1994, entitled: Methods for Risk Assessment of Transgenic Plants. I. Competition, Establishment and Ecosystem Effects. Already when the work on volume 1 started, it was obvious to the authors, that not only the physical establishment of a transgenic plant outside the cultivated area was important for risk assessment, but also the possible gene-transfer from transgenic plants to other plants had to be considered. It was then decided to write a second volume on test methods, as a complement to the first, covering the main topics: Pollination, gene-transfer and population impacts. The main user groups for this volume are scientists and students working with plant population genetics and risk assessment and administrators with responsibility for legislation of transgenic plants. In order to cover such a broad range of topics, specialist knowledge was required. Therefore, colleagues in Denmark and Switzerland, working in these fields in relation to the concerns of using transgenic plants, were asked to participate. The result was a Danish-Swiss cooperation. A list of contributors to the book and their addresses is shown on p. VII. Financial support, which made the work possible, was given by: The National Environmental Research Institute, Denmark, the Federal Office of Environment, Forest and Landscape, Switzerland, the National Forest and Nature Agency, Denmark, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the European Commission, DC XI.
