    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Ogden
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2019-12-31
  • ISBN : 0691207062
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book Greek and Roman Necromancy written by Daniel Ogden and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In classical antiquity, there was much interest in necromancy--the consultation of the dead for divination. People could seek knowledge from the dead by sleeping on tombs, visiting oracles, and attempting to reanimate corpses and skulls. Ranging over many of the lands in which Greek and Roman civilizations flourished, including Egypt, from the Greek archaic period through the late Roman empire, this book is the first comprehensive survey of the subject ever published in any language. Daniel Ogden surveys the places, performers, and techniques of necromancy as well as the reasons for turning to it. He investigates the cave-based sites of oracles of the dead at Heracleia Pontica and Tainaron, as well as the oracles at the Acheron and Avernus, which probably consisted of lakeside precincts. He argues that the Acheron oracle has been long misidentified, and considers in detail the traditions attached to each site. Readers meet the personnel--real or imagined--of ancient necromancy: ghosts, zombies, the earliest vampires, evocators, sorcerers, shamans, Persian magi, Chaldaeans, Egyptians, Roman emperors, and witches from Circe to Medea. Ogden explains the technologies used to evocate or reanimate the dead and to compel them to disgorge their secrets. He concludes by examining ancient beliefs about ghosts and their wisdom--beliefs that underpinned and justified the practice of necromancy. The first of its kind and filled with information, this volume will be of central importance to those interested in the rapidly expanding, inherently fascinating, and intellectually exciting subjects of ghosts and magic in antiquity.

Book Forbidden Rites

Download or read book Forbidden Rites written by Richard Kieckhefer and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1998-02-26 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preserved in the Bavarian State Library in Munich is a manuscript that few scholars have noticed and that no one in modern times has treated with the seriousness it deserves. Forbidden Rites consists of an edition of this medieval Latin text with a full commentary, including detailed analysis of the text and its contents, discussion of the historical context, translation of representative sections of the text, and comparison with other necromantic texts of the late Middle Ages. The result is the most vivid and readable introduction to medieval magic now available. Like many medieval texts for the use of magicians, this handbook is a miscellany rather than a systematic treatise. It is exceptional, however, in the scope and variety of its contents—prayers and conjurations, rituals of sympathetic magic, procedures involving astral magic, a catalogue of spirits, lengthy ceremonies for consecrating a book of magic, and other materials. With more detail on particular experiments than the famous thirteenth-century Picatrix and more variety than the Thesaurus Necromantiae ascribed to Roger Bacon, the manual is one of the most interesting and important manuscripts of medieval magic that has yet come to light.

Book excerpt: "Knowledge in the absence of wisdom is a dangerous thing." Texas archaeology student Nicolas Murray has an ironic fear of the dead. A latent power connecting him to an ancient order of Necromancers floods his mind with impossible images of battle among hive-mind predators and philosopher fishmen. When a funeral service leaves him shaken and questioning his sanity, the insidious power strands him in a land where the sky kills and earthquakes level cities. A land where the undead serve the living, and Necromancers summon warriors from ancient graves to fight in a war that spans life and afterlife. If Nicolas masters the Three Laws of Necromancy, he can use them to get home. But as he learns to raise and purify the dead-a process that makes him relive entire lifetimes in the span of a moment-the very power that could bring him home may also prevent his return. For the supreme religious leader, the Archmage Kagan, has outlawed Necromancy, and its practitioners risk torture and execution. As warring nations hunt Necromancers to extinction, countless dead in limbo await a purification that may never come. Nicolas's power could be his way home... Or it could save a world that wants him dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it first appeared over 500 years ago, the Elucidation of Necromancy (Lucidarium artis Nigromantice) and the closely related Heptameron have become essential guides for individuals seeking to call on angels and other supernatural beings for help. Countless amulets and pendants have been made with its designs, and elements have repeatedly been adapted and incorporated into other manuals of ritual magic. In spite of this, neither a critical edition nor a translation has been previously published. In particular three manuscripts of Lucidarium have come to light recently, which provide a clearer and fuller ritual than the printed Heptameron. For example, they add critical instructions for making the seven angel sigils, which have become so widely known. Together they bring to life this important current of esoteric tradition, showing how it has been repeatedly adapted and used by different individuals for centuries.

Book excerpt: 'It's enthralling stuff, mixing the scholarly with the accessible and placing storytelling right at the heart of the human experience.' - History Revealed 'A fascinating journey' - Yorkshire Post 'Marvellous...Finkel is an expert in Mesopotamian cultures at the British Museum, and is one of the most clever, and nicest, of people it has ever been my pleasure to encounter...A fascinating journey' - The Scotsman There are few things more in common across cultures than the belief in ghosts. Ghosts inhabit something of the very essence of what it is to be human. Whether we personally 'believe' or not, we are all aware of ghosts and the rich mythologies and rituals surrounding them. They have inspired, fascinated and frightened us for centuries - yet most of us are only familiar with the vengeful apparitions of Shakespeare, or the ghastly spectres haunting the pages of 19th century gothic literature. But their origins are much, much older... The First Ghosts: Most Ancient of Legacies takes us back to the very beginning. A world-renowned authority on cuneiform, the form of writing on clay tablets which dates back to 3400BC, Irving Finkel has embarked upon an ancient ghost hunt, scouring these tablets to unlock the secrets of the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians to breathe new life into the first ghost stories ever written. In The First Ghosts, he uncovers an extraordinarily rich seam of ancient spirit wisdom which has remained hidden for nearly 4000 years, covering practical details of how to live with ghosts, how to get rid of them and bring them back, and how to avoid becoming one, as well as exploring more philosophical questions: what are ghosts, why does the idea of them remain so powerful despite the lack of concrete evidence, and what do they tell us about being human?

Download or read book Necromancy written by Lucien Rofocale and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2011-03-07 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occult history and the Black Arts reveals that man has always attempted to marshal the powerful forces to his Will. Spirits of the dead have been called upon in recorded history in a great many ancient books, from Ulysses to the Bible when The Witch of Endor was consulted by King Saul to predict the outcome of a great battle. As mankind has sought answers to what life is about, he has feared what lies afterwards and sought answers from those passing over the veil for solace. Sometimes they disturbed spirits to divine for arcane knowledge, to find treasure or any number of questions. Of course disturbing these souls was a highly risky thought and so protection was used to make sure the summoner was protected. Crossroads were places that people meet their fate, often held up by highwaymen, bandits looking for easy prey. These foul people were tried and hung in the very same location. A crossroad was symbolic as well, for it implicated that both the living and dead alike were used to passing by way of them, and the choice to make the correct path clearly was a paralleled. Of course, old abandoned churches made a good place, but graveyards were the best. The Necromancer wore clothing from corpses and ate tasteless foods, avoided women, all in an attempt to connect with the dead and their energies, so deep was their determination to carry out their plans. People from Franciscan friar Roger Bacon to Dr. John Dee, advisor to Queen Elizabeth sought out such spirits, as did Eliphas Levi in the 1800's.Freemasons and members of the Golden Dawn mentioned its use, and many modern writers have touched upon this taboo and misunderstood subject. Now, the publishers of Dark Moon Press are pleased to bring you Lucien Rofocale's work, Necromancy: The forbidden art as he dives deep into the history, tools and rituals of this fascinating form of magic. I hope you enjoy this little tome as much as I have. It will excite you, and reveal secrets long shadowed in mystery over the ages that until recently most people were not able to discover.
