Book The Chanka

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian S. Bauer
  • Publisher : Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In AD 1438 a battle took place outside the city of Cuzco that changed the course of South American history. The Chanka, a powerful ethnic group from the Andahuaylas region, had begun an aggressive program of expansion. Conquering a host of smaller polities, their army had advanced well inside the territory of their traditional rival, the Inca. In a series of unusual maneuvers, the Inca defeated the invading Chanka forces and became the most powerful people in the Andes. Many scholars believe that the defeat of the Chanka represents a defining moment in the history of South America as the Inca then continued to expand and establish the largest empire of the Americas. Despite its critical position in South American history, until recently the Chanka heartland remained unexplored and the cultural processes that led to their rapid development and subsequent defeat by the Inca had not been investigated. From 2001 to 2004, Brian Bauer conducted an archaeological survey of the Andahuaylas region. This project represents an unparalleled opportunity to examine theoretical issues concerning the history and cultural development of late-prehistoric societies in this area of the Andes. The resulting book includes an archaeological analysis on the development of the Chanka and examines their ultimate defeat by the Inca.

Book Ceramics of the Merv Oasis

Download or read book Ceramics of the Merv Oasis written by Gabriele Puschnigg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge of many groups or periods has benefited from systematic ceramic analysis, however as yet the Sasanian Empire of ancient Persia (224-651 AD) has not be subjected to the same examination. Merv, an expansive ancient city located in an oasis in the Central Asian steppes, was for millennia a gateway for travelers and traders along the Silk Road between east and west. Puschnigg’s detailed study of Merv’s Sasanian pottery creates a benchmark for other work on this ceramic corpus. She dissects the frequency, dates, wares, and profiles of hundreds of securely excavated pieces and compares them with the finds from earlier Russian studies, generally unavailable to western researchers. Puschnigg uses this material to provide insights into the social and economic dimensions of the Sasanian world, as well as providing researchers with a catalog of typical shapes and wares.

Book excerpt: After Alexander: The Hellenistic and Early Roman Periods at Pella in Jordan details the excavation of Hellenistic and Early Roman period horizons carried out at Pella in Jordan by the University of Sydney since 1979. It deals with both the stratigraphy of the Hellenistic and Early Roman levels at Pella, and catalogues the pottery recovered from them. Short summaries of relevant work by the College of Wooster are also included. After a brief introduction to the site and history of excavations, a detailed description of the Hellenistic and Early Roman levels on the main mound of Khirbet Fahl, on nearby Tell Husn, and in select hinterland locations, then follows. The heart of the study centres on a detailed catalogue of the corpus of some 900 individual Hellenistic-Early Roman pottery fragments, accompanied by outline drawings for each fragment, and a smaller number of images of the more important pieces. Discussion of the relevance and importance of the material remains to the history and archaeology of the Hellenistic and Early Roman periods at Pella and more broadly to Jordan and the southern Levant concludes the study.

Book excerpt: Australia's oldest and favourite newspaper dissects the last decade of political turmoil and cultural frustrations that turned us all against each other, and how we broke down those walls of division to come together again. This is our country's coming of age story. How good. It's been a tough few years. We've had three prime ministers in four years, a scandalous ball-tampering scandal, our own #Metoo moments (Defamation laws apply*), the Murray-Darling fish kills and, worst of all, the cancellation of both the NRL and AFL footy shows. In this penetrating and incisive book, The Betoota Advocate's editors Clancy Overell and Errol Parker take us on the nation's journey through chaos and confusion, to the start of a new era. Finally, we as a nation have been gifted the rare opportunity to choose who leads our country for an entire federal term. Our cricketers now use talent and skill to win matches. The culture wars are over, and common sense prevails. With a sensible Liberal government, a charismatic PM and a united, strong and experienced cabinet of some of our nation's greatest minds in place, we are well on the road to economic stability and environmental renewal. Join Australia's most trusted newspaper from the remote but vibrant town of Betoota, as we detail the last four years in news - how bad things got, and how lucky we, as a nation, have been to survive it all. How Good's Australia. This is a specially formatted fixed layout ebook that retains the look and feel of the print book.

Book The Art and Archaeology of the Moche

Download or read book The Art and Archaeology of the Moche written by Steve Bourget and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-06-03 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned for their monumental architecture and rich visual culture, the Moche inhabited the north coast of Peru during the Early Intermediate Period (AD 100-800). Archaeological discoveries over the past century and the dissemination of Moche artifacts to museums around the world have given rise to a widespread and continually increasing fascination with this complex culture, which expressed its beliefs about the human and supernatural worlds through finely crafted ceramic and metal objects of striking realism and visual sophistication. In this standard-setting work, an international, multidisciplinary team of scholars who are at the forefront of Moche research present a state-of-the-art overview of Moche culture. The contributors address various issues of Moche society, religion, and material culture based on multiple lines of evidence and methodologies, including iconographic studies, archaeological investigations, and forensic analyses. Some of the articles present the results of long-term studies of major issues in Moche iconography, while others focus on more specifically defined topics such as site studies, the influence of El Niño/Southern Oscillation on Moche society, the nature of Moche warfare and sacrifice, and the role of Moche visual culture in decoding social and political frameworks.
