Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher and Old Age The calling of the public-school teacher is not yet, in America, a profession. But everywhere the earnest friends of education are striving to transform teaching from a temporary and often casual employment into a vocation exhibiting something of the systematic preparation, the stability, the progressiveness, and the dignity of a profession. Some of the means that have been found helpful in improving the professional status of the teacher are: professional training, both before and during service; state certification; more permanent tenure; skilled supervision; promotion to higher rank or salary on the basis of merit; and more attractive financial compensation for work done. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pensions for Public School Teachers: A Report for the Committee on Salaries, Pensions, and Tenure, of the National Education Association The National Education Association's Committee on Salaries, Tenure, and Pensions, appointed in 1911, has published, independently or in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Education, reports on "Teachers' Salaries and Cost of Living" (January, 1918), "The Tangible Rewards of Teaching" (Bulletin 16, U. S. Bureau of Education, 1914), "Salaries of Teachers and School Officers" (Bulletin 81, U. S. Bureau of Education, 1915), and "State Pension Systems for Public School Teachers" (Bulletin 14, U. S. Bureau of Education, 1916). The Committee has also enlisted the cooperation of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching which, in addition to its granting of pensions to university and college professors, has conducted, for a dozen years, comprehensive studies of pensions for teachers, wherever such systems exist. The President of the Foundation, Dr. Henry S. Pritchett, placed at the disposal of the Committee all of this material, together with the services of the Secretary of the Foundation, Dr. Clyde Furst, and his colleague, Dr. I. L. Kandel. These gentlemen have met in extensive conference with the Committee and invited representatives from each state at the meetings of the National Education Association and its Department of Superintendence, at Detroit and New York in 1916, and Atlantic City and Pittsburgh in 1918. The reports which they prepared for these meetings, the meeting at Kansas City in 1917, and the meeting of the National Council of Education at New York in 1916, have been printed in the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Annual Reports of the Carnegie Foundation, which have been sent, without charge, to all teachers who requested them. Book Scholarship Reconsidered

Download or read book Scholarship Reconsidered written by Ernest L. Boyer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting faculty roles in a changing landscape Ernest L. Boyer's landmark book Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate challenged the publish-or-perish status quo that dominated the academic landscape for generations. His powerful and enduring argument for a new approach to faculty roles and rewards continues to play a significant part of the national conversation on scholarship in the academy. Though steeped in tradition, the role of faculty in the academic world has shifted significantly in recent decades. The rise of the non-tenure-track class of professors is well documented. If the historic rule of promotion and tenure is waning, what role can scholarship play in a fragmented, unbundled academy? Boyer offers a still much-needed approach. He calls for a broadened view of scholarship, audaciously refocusing its gaze from the tenure file and to a wider community. This expanded edition offers, in addition to the original text, a critical introduction that explores the impact of Boyer's views, a call to action for applying Boyer's message to the changing nature of faculty work, and a discussion guide to help readers start a new conversation about how Scholarship Reconsidered applies today.

Book The Age of Accountability

Download or read book The Age of Accountability written by Dominic Belmonte and published by Myers Education Press. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s clear that American public education has been under assault for more than the last 30 years. So much of this current "age of accountability" has focused on blame, both of teachers and those who prepare them. Somehow, unlike in other professions, declarations were made to the effect that anyone could teach better than teachers, including business leaders and people from tony universities without teacher preparation. The Age of Accountability scrutinizes the attack on teachers through weaponized data. While an effective corporate tool to improve bottom-line goals, its use in education became more sinister and misanthropic. International PISA scores imply the mediocre ability of American students, fueling a belief that American education needed more than an upgrade. The only answer that would placate many was a complete upheaval, a redefinition of a teacher and who should be permitted to become one. We teachers ceded authority to these business and legislative forces. Their subsequent fervor for testing overwhelmed teaching and drove the joy out of schooling for students. It is time for a recounting of what has been done to the profession and to our children. Young teachers need encouragement and veteran teachers need reminding of their valiant and effective efforts. Perfect for courses such as: History of Education | Assessment in Teacher Evaluation | Value-Added Metrics | Urban Education | University Teacher Preparation | Teaching and Learning

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beat burnout with time-saving best practices for feedback For ELA teachers, the danger of burnout is all too real. Inundated with seemingly insurmountable piles of papers to read, respond to, and grade, many teachers often find themselves struggling to balance differentiated, individualized feedback with the one resource they are already overextended on—time. Matthew Johnson offers classroom-tested solutions that not only alleviate the feedback-burnout cycle, but also lead to significant growth for students. These time-saving strategies built on best practices for feedback help to improve relationships, ignite motivation, and increase student ownership of learning. Flash Feedback also takes teachers to the next level of strategic feedback by sharing: How to craft effective, efficient, and more memorable feedback Strategies for scaffolding students through the meta-cognitive work necessary for real revision A plan for how to create a culture of feedback, including lessons for how to train students in meaningful peer response Downloadable online tools for teacher and student use Moving beyond the theory of working smarter, not harder, Flash Feedback works deeper by developing practices for teacher efficiency that also boost effectiveness by increasing students’ self-efficacy, improving the clarity of our messages, and ultimately creating a classroom centered around meaningful feedback.
