Book NEBULAR Collection 1 The Triton Base

Download or read book NEBULAR Collection 1 The Triton Base written by Thomas Rabenstein and published by SciFi-World Medien Verlag. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEBULAR is a science fiction series that transports you to the year 2113. It is an era in which nation states are a thing of the past. United in the Solar Union, Humanity faces its last great challenge: the exploration of the outer Solar System. The Union Fleet already maintains scientific outposts on the distant moons of the gas giants Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Private companies are mining for raw materials and large spaceships are travelling between the inner planets. The causes of earlier civilisational setbacks, such as wars, diseases and poverty, have been overcome. Around ten billion Union citizens populate the Earth, with another 250 million humans settling in the growing colonies on the Luna and Mars. The furthest outpost from Earth is located on Neptune's moon Triton. It is an icy cold world where mainly scientists and private companies are based. The crew's main task is to explore the Kuiper Belt, also known as the Outer Ring, with its numerous dwarf planets. Astrophysicists are using the remoteness of the celestial body to advance the search for extraterrestrial life. The scientists of the new SETI project use their receiving antennas to examine the neighbouring stars for potential radio signals from alien civilisations. A total of around two thousand humans are working on the Triton Base. Space travellers from Earth have seen the ice deserts on Jupiter's moon Europa, the dust storms of Mars and the primeval hydrocarbon seas on Saturn's moon Titan with their own eyes, but so far they have not found any extraterrestrial life. One of Humanity's most important goals remains to make peaceful contact with alien civilisations in space. Unconsciously, most scientists hope that these life forms are similar to us and that communication is possible. So far, the search has been unsuccessful, but this does not rule out the possibility that they exist in the infinite expanses of space and are already watching us.

The team enters an underground cavern and discovers a terrifying, frozen alien creature during their exploration. After the alien’s rigidity has given way, the spacemen have no choice but to flee. Through the extraterrestrial’s extreme bioelectric radiation, the humans receive fragments of its thoughts. The creature transmits an impulse that takes root in the minds of the landing team: Globuster! The bestial-looking creature behaves in an extremely hostile manner. Peaceful contact seems impossible. One crew member is killed in the collision, the others manage to escape from the Globuster cave. The bizarre intelligence creature begins to race, destroys the scout ship of the exploration team and starts a hunt for the survivors. It has the ability to detect other creatures by their mental aura. While trying to escape, Bill Davis and Caroline Tubian realise that they are inferior to the extraterrestrial in every way. Hand weapons they carry with them prove ineffective. The Globuster envelops itself in a protective field against which there seems to be no remedy. At the last second, a commando from the Triton Base appears and is able to evacuate the two astronauts. The alien retreats in the face of the supposed superiority and escapes in a lenticular spaceship. Before doing so, it triggers a fateful process and changes the orbital path of the dwarf planet. It now lies exactly on a collision course with Triton ...

Download or read book Neptune and Triton written by Dale P. Cruikshank and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1995-11 with total page 1292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first reconnaissance of all the major planets of the Solar System culminated in the Voyager 2 encounter with Neptune in August 1989. Neptune itself was revealed as a planet with gigantic active storms in its atmosphere, and off-center magnetic field, and a system of tenuous, lumpy rings. Whereas only two satellites were known prior to the encounter, Voyager discovered six more. Triton, the largest satellite, was revealed as a frozen, icy world with clouds and layers of haze, and with vertical plumes of particles reaching five miles into the thin atmosphere. This latest Space Science Series volume presents the current level of understanding of Neptune, its riings, and its satellites, derived from the data received from the Voyager. The book's chapters are written by the world's leading authorities on various aspects of the Neptune system and are based on papers presented at an international conference held in January 1992. Covering details of Neptune's interior, atmosphere, rings, magnetic fields, and near-space environment--as well as the small satellites and the remarkable moon Triton--this volume is a unique resource for planetary scientists and astronomers requiring a comprehensive analysis of Neptune viewed in the context of our knowledge of the other giant planets. Until another spacecraft is sent to Neptune, Neptune and Triton will stand as the basic reference on the planet.

Book Pluto and Charon

    Book Details:
  • Author : S. Alan Stern
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2017-01-15
  • ISBN : 0816536139
  • Pages : 757 pages

Download or read book Pluto and Charon written by S. Alan Stern and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 757 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five decades after its discovery in 1930, the planet Pluto remained an enigma. However, several events during the last two decades have helped to lift the veil of mystery surrounding the ninth planet. The discovery of its satellite, Charon, in 1978 permitted occultation observations that allowed scientists to determine the size of both bodies. Astronomers also detected the presence of an atmosphere, and the Hubble Space Telescope provided views in unprecedented detail. In addition to these two fortuitous events, advances in telescopic instrumentation and computational methods led to exciting observational and theoretical discoveries. This new Space Sciences Series volume focuses on the scientific issues associated with Pluto and Charon. Fifty collaborating authors here review the latest research on the Pluto-Charon binary, from bulk properties, surfaces and interiors to atmospheric structure, composition, and dynamics. They also provide historical perspectives on Pluto-Charon research and discuss the population of the trans-Neptunian region and the origin of the Pluto-Charon binary. Also included are prefatory remarks by Pluto's and Charon's discoverers, Clyde Tombaugh and James Christy. This volume offers the most comprehensive available compendium of research work for understanding these far off members of our solar system, just at a time following dramatic developments in our knowledge but before that knowledge can be advanced by spacecraft missions.

Book Planetary Systems Formation Evolution and Detection

Download or read book Planetary Systems Formation Evolution and Detection written by Bernard F. Burke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Are there other planetary systems like ours? Other planets like ours? Is there life elsewhere in the Universe?' So asks Dr. Lew Allen Jr. in the Foreword. In December of 1992, theorists, observers, and instrument builders gathered at the California Institute of Technology to discuss the search for answers to these questions. The International Conference, entitled `Planetary Systems: Formation, Evolution, and Detection' and supported through NASA's newly formed TOPS (Toward Other Planetary Systems) program, was the first of a series of conferences uniting researchers across disciplines and political boundaries to share thoughts and information on planetary systems. The conference was sponsored by NASA, hosted by JPL at Caltech, and endorsed by the 1992 International Space Year Association. These proceedings include discussions of topics ranging from stellar, disk, and planetary formation to new ways of searching for other stellar systems containing planets. The authors represent a wide range of nationalities, disciplines, and points of view. The second international conference took place in December of 1993.

Book Formation Of The Solar System The Theories Old And New 2nd Edition

Download or read book Formation Of The Solar System The Theories Old And New 2nd Edition written by Michael Mark Woolfson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully-updated second edition remains the only truly detailed exploration of the origins of our Solar System, written by an authority in the field. Unlike other authors, Michael Woolfson focuses on the formation of the solar system, engaging the reader in an intelligent yet accessible discussion of the development of ideas about how the Solar System formed from ancient times to the present.Within the last five decades new observations and new theoretical advances have transformed the way scientists think about the problem of finding a plausible theory. Spacecraft and landers have explored the planets of the Solar System, observations have been made of Solar-System bodies outside the region of the planets and planets have been detected and observed around many solar-type stars. This new edition brings in the most recent discoveries, including the establishment of dwarf planets and challenges to the ‘standard model’ of planet formation — the Solar Nebula Theory. While presenting the most up-to-date material and the underlying science of the theories described, the book avoids technical jargon and terminology. It thus remains a digestible read for the non-expert interested reader, whilst being detailed and comprehensive enough to be used as an undergraduate physics and astronomy textbook, where the formation of the solar system is a key part of the course.Michael Woolfson is Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics at University of York and is an award-winning crystallographer and astronomer.
