Book Cattle Beet Capital

Download or read book Cattle Beet Capital written by Michael Weeks and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-07 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1870 several hundred settlers arrived at a patch of land at the confluence of the South Platte and Cache la Poudre Rivers in Colorado Territory. Their planned agricultural community, which they named Greeley, was centered around small landholdings, shared irrigation, and a variety of market crops. One hundred years later, Greeley was the home of the world’s largest concentrated cattle-feeding operation, with the resources of an entire region directed toward manufacturing beef. How did that transformation happen? Cattle Beet Capital is animated by that question. Expanding outward from Greeley to all of northern Colorado, Cattle Beet Capital shows how the beet sugar industry came to dominate the region in the early twentieth century through a reciprocal relationship with its growers that supported a healthy and sustainable agriculture while simultaneously exploiting tens of thousands of migrant laborers. Michael Weeks shows how the state provided much of the scaffolding for the industry in the form of tariffs and research that synchronized with the agendas of industry and large farmers. The transformations that led to commercial feedlots began during the 1930s as farmers replaced crop rotations and seasonal livestock operations with densely packed cattle pens, mono-cropped corn, and the products pouring out of agro-industrial labs and factories. Using the lens of the northern Colorado region, Cattle Beet Capital illuminates the historical processes that made our modern food systems.

Book Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle

Download or read book Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1944, the National Research Council (NRC) has published seven editions of the Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle. This reference has guided nutritionists and other professionals in academia and the cattle and feed industries in developing and implementing nutritional and feeding programs for beef cattle. The cattle industry has undergone considerable changes since the seventh revised edition was published in 2000 and some of the requirements and recommendations set forth at that time are no longer relevant or appropriate. The eighth revised edition of the Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle builds on the previous editions. A great deal of new research has been published during the past 14 years and there is a large amount of new information for many nutrients. In addition to a thorough and current evaluation of the literature on the energy and nutrient requirements of beef in all stages of life, this volume includes new information about phosphorus and sulfur contents; a review of nutritional and feeding strategies to minimize nutrient losses in manure and reduce greenhouse gas production; a discussion of the effect of feeding on the nutritional quality and food safety of beef; new information about nutrient metabolism and utilization; new information on feed additives that alter rumen metabolism and postabsorptive metabolism; and future areas of needed research. The tables of feed ingredient composition are significantly updated. Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle represents a comprehensive review of the most recent information available on beef cattle nutrition and ingredient composition that will allow efficient, profitable, and environmentally conscious beef production.

Book Ethanol Co Product Use in U S Cattle Feeding

Download or read book Ethanol Co Product Use in U S Cattle Feeding written by Kenneth H. Mathews and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The byproducts of making ethanol, sweeteners, syrups, and oils were considered less valuable than the primary products. But the increased livestock-feed market for such byproducts has switched that perception to one of the ethanol industry making grain-based ¿co-products (CP)¿ that have market value separate from the primary products. CP such as dried distiller¿s grains, corn gluten feed, corn gluten meal, corn oil, and brewer¿s grains have become economically viable components, along with traditional ingred., in feed rations. The CP have limitations, such as variable moisture content, product avail., nutrient excesses or deficiencies, and nutrient variability. These limitations affect how they must be handled and stored and how much they cost. Illus.
