Book excerpt: When Lewis and Clark pulled their way up the Missouri River in the summer of 1804, their journals reported an area of boundless prairie and beautiful streams on the river's west bank. Fifty years later, the community of Nebraska City was born on that very spot. For many decades, the community served as a jumping-off point for travelers bound farther westward as thousands of wagon trains departed every year. By the late 1800s, the city became known for another reason: the home of Arbor Day. First introduced by Nebraska City resident J. Sterling Morton in 1872, Arbor Day became Nebraska's holiday and is now celebrated worldwide. The 1900s saw a decline in the transportation industry but a rise in manufacturing and the growing and canning of produce. Today, historical tourism makes up the economic lifeblood of this small but thriving community.

Book Zoo Nebraska

Download or read book Zoo Nebraska written by Carson Vaughan and published by Little A. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A resonant true story of small-town politics and community perseverance and of decent people and questionable choices, Zoo Nebraska is a timely requiem for a rural America in the throes of extinction. Royal, Nebraska, population eighty-one--where the church, high school, and post office each stand abandoned, monuments to a Great Plains town that never flourished. But for nearly twenty years, they had a zoo, seven acres that rose from local peculiarity to key tourist attraction to devastating tragedy. And it all began with one man's outsize vision. When Dick Haskin's plans to assist primatologist Dian Fossey in Rwanda were cut short by her murder, Dick's devotion to primates didn't die with her. He returned to his hometown with Reuben, an adolescent chimp, in the bed of a pickup truck and transformed a trailer home into the Midwest Primate Center. As the tourist trade multiplied, so did the inhabitants of what would become Zoo Nebraska, the unlikeliest boon to Royal's economy in generations and, eventually, the source of a power struggle that would lead to the tragic implosion of Dick Haskin's dream.

Book Drama and Pride in the Gateway City

Download or read book Drama and Pride in the Gateway City written by Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1964 the storied St. Louis Cardinals had gone seventeen years without so much as a pennant. Things began to turn around in 1953, when August A. Busch Jr. bought the team and famously asked where all the black players were. Under the leadership of men like Bing Devine and Johnny Keane, the Cardinals began signing talented players regardless of color, and slowly their star started to rise again. Drama and Pride in the Gateway City commemorates the team that Bing Devine built, the 1964 team that prevailed in one of the tightest three-way pennant races of all time and then went on to win the World Series, beating the New York Yankees in the full seven games. All the men come alive in these pages--pitchers Ray Sadecki and Bob Gibson, players Lou Brock, Curt Flood, and Bobby Shantz, manager Johnny Keane, his coaches, the Cardinals' broadcasters, and Bill White, who would one day run the entire National League--along with the dramatic events that made the 1964 Cardinals such a memorable club in a memorable year.

Book Island in the City

Download or read book Island in the City written by Micah McCrary and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-09 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What forges the unique human personality? In Island in the City Micah McCrary, taking his genetic inheritance as immutable, considers the role geography has played in shaping who he is. Place often leaves indelible marks: the badges of self-discovery; the scars from adversity and hardship; the gilded stamps from personal triumphs; the tattoos of memory; and the new appendages--friendships, experiences, and baggage--we carry with us. Each place, with its own personality, has the power to form or revise our personhood in surprising and fascinating ways. McCrary considers three places he has called home (Normal, Illinois; Chicago; and Prague) and reflects on how these surroundings have shaped him. His sharp-eyed, charming memoir-in-essays contemplates how aspects of his identity, such as being black, male, middle-class, queer, and American, have developed and been influenced by where he hangs his hat.
