Book excerpt: Abstract: During the last decade, numerous Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, including TOPEX/POSEIDON, CHAMP and GRACE, have been launched for scientific purposes at altitudes ranging from 400 km to 1300 km. To support GPS meteorology, efficient LEO orbit determination methods were developed using the triple-differenced GPS phase observations. These methods include the kinematic, dynamic, and reduced-dynamic approach based on the wave algorithm. To test the developed algorithms, 24 hours of CHAMP data on February 15, 2003, which amounts to 15 revolutions, were used for each method. Precise IGS orbits are used for the GPS satellites, and 43 IGS ground tracking stations were chosen using the algorithm developed in this study, based on the network optimization theory. The estimated orbit solutions were compared with the published Rapid Science Orbit (RSO) and the consistency testing was performed for the dynamic solution. In addition, the SLR residuals were also computed as an independent validation of the methods presented here. After the forward and backward filtering, the kinematic approach shows accuracy better than "20 cm in 3D RMS for a half day arc compared to the reference RSO. With this careful modeling, the dynamic solution shows an agreement within "8 cm in position and "0.12 mm/s in velocity of RSO. The computation time of the dynamic solution for the 24-hour arc is 2.5 hours on a 3 GHz PC platform. The wave algorithm shows a better fit to RSO for each tested segment. However, there is slightly larger bias in its solution, thus, the overall RMS of fit is comparable to the dynamic orbit solution. The CHAMP orbit is successfully estimated in this study to support, for example, the GPS meteorology, using a new method that is accurate as well as fast and efficient. The hypothesis testing indicates that the estimated dynamic solution of this study is consistent with the published RSO. Also, the SLR residual test shows that the CHAMP orbit solution estimated in this study is comparable to solutions determined by other analysis centers, such as JPL and GFZ.

Book excerpt: Satellite tracking techniques have traditionally been limited to ground-based stations that measure a satellite's range, azimuth, elevation and range rate, The advent of high accuracy Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation techniques, however, offers alternative methods. This thesis investigates the use of GPS navigation solutions (earth-centered, earth-fixed position and velocity information) as an observation source in a weighted least- squares orbit determination process. Such an orbit determination scheme could limit dependence upon the costly and complex ground-based tracking facilities for low and medium earth orbit satellites, while providing real-time information for on-board instrumentation and mission management. This investigation included modification of the Draper Laboratory version of the Goddard Trajectory Determination System (Draper R&D GTDS) to include coordinate systems compatible with the Fifth Fundamental Catalogue (FK5) and an inertial true equator and equinox of date frame. Solid earth tide modeling was introduced for numerical integration techniques and refined for semianalytic methods. The accuracy of the navigation solution-derived orbits (and the ability of Draper R&D GTDS to model spacecraft motion) is determined for the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX), Technology for Autonomous Operational Survivability (TAOS), and Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) through comparison to high quality, independently generated 'truth' solutions (Precise Orbit Ephemerides, or POEs).

The theme "Geodesy for Planet Earth" was selected to follow the International Year of Planet Earth 2007-2009 goals of utilizing the knowledge of the world’s geoscientists to improve society for current and future generations. The International Year started in January 2007 and ran thru 2009 which coincided with the IAG2009 Scientific Assembly, one of the largest and most significant meetings of the Geodesy community held every 4 years. The IAG2009 Scientific Assembly was organized into eight Sessions. Four of the Sessions of IAG2009 were based on the IAG Structure (i.e. one per Commission) and covered Reference Frames, Gravity Field, Earth Rotation and Geodynamics, and Positioning and Applications. Since IAG2009 was taking place in the great Argentine city of Buenos Aires, a Session was devoted to the Geodesy of Latin America. A Session dedicated to the IAG’s Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS), the primary observing system focused on the multidisciplinary research being done in Geodesy that contributes to important societal issues such as monitoring global climate change and the environment. A Session on the IAG Services was also part of the Assembly detailing the important role they play in providing geodetic data, products, and analysis to the scientific community. A final Session devoted to the organizations ION, FIG, and ISPRS and their significant work in navigation and earth observation that complements the IAG.

Book excerpt: In an effort to estimate precise satellite ephemeris in real-time on board a satellite, the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) created the GPS Enhanced Orbit Determination Experiment (GEODE) flight navigation software. This dissertation offers alternative methods and improvements to GEODE to increase on board autonomy and real-time total position accuracy and precision without increasing computational burden. First, GEODE is modified to include a Gravity Acceleration Approximation Function (GAAF) to replace the traditional spherical harmonic representation of the gravity field. Next, an ionospheric correction method called Differenced Range Versus Integrated Doppler (DRVID) is applied to correct for ionospheric errors in the GPS measurements used in GEODE. Then, Dynamic Model Compensation (DMC) is added to estimate unmodeled and/or mismodeled forces in the dynamic model and to provide an alternative process noise variance-covariance formulation. Finally, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is implemented in the form of Genetic Model Compensation (GMC) to optimize DMC forcing noise parameters. Application of GAAF, DRVID an(i DMC improved GEODE's position estimates by 28.3% when applied to GPS/MET data collected in the presence of Selective Availability (SA), 17.5% when SA is removed from the GPS/MET data and 10.8% on SA free TOPEX data. Position estimates with RSS errors below 1 meter are now achieved using SA free TOPEX data. DRVID causes an increase in computational burden while GAAF and DMC reduce computational burden. The net effect of applying GAAF, DRVID and DMC is an improvement in GEODE's accuracy/precision without an increase in computational burden.

Recognizing the growing reliance of a wide range of scientific and societal endeavors on infrastructure for precise geodesy, and recognizing geodetic infrastructure as a shared national resource, this book provides an independent assessment of the benefits provided by geodetic observations and networks, as well as a plan for the future development and support of the infrastructure needed to meet the demand for increasingly greater precision. Book excerpt: The contribution of Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) to the definition of the origin of the reference frame (geocenter coordinates), the global scale, and low degree coefficients of the Earth's gravity field is essential due to the remarkable orbit stability of geodetic satellites and the accuracy of laser observations at a level of a few millimeters. Considering these aspects, SLR has an exceptional potential in establishing global networks and deriving geodetic parameters of the supreme quality. SLR faces today the highest requirements of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) yielding 1 mm of long-term station coordinate and 0.1 mm/y of station velocity stability. The goal of this work is to assess the contribution of the latest models and corrections to the SLR-derived parameters, to enhance the quality and reliability of the SLR-derived products, and to propose a new approach of orbit parameterization for low orbiting geodetic satellites. The impact of orbit perturbations is studied in detail, including perturbing forces of gravitational origin (Earth's gravity field, ocean and atmosphere tides) and perturbing forces of non-gravitational origin (atmospheric drag, the Yarkovsky effect, albedo and Earth's infrared radiation pressure). A multi-satellite combined solution is obtained using SLR observations to LAGEOS-1, LAGEOS-2, Starlette, Stella, and AJISAI. The quality of the SLR-derived parameters from the combined solution is compared with external solutions. The Earth rotation parameters are compared to the IERS-08-C04 series and the GNSS-derived series, whereas the time variable Earth's gravity field coefficients are compared to the CHAMP and GRACE-derived results.

There are various orbit determination strategies in which the GPS observables are involved. This book investigates different algorithms using the data from the GPS receiver on board the first Turkish remote sensing micro-satellite BilSAT-1. Pseudorange observations of BilSAT-1 obtained from TÜB TAK-UZAY are used to perform different orbit determination algorithms. Both a kinematic orbit determination approach with least squares estimation on the basis of Gauss- Markoff model and reduced-dynamic orbit determination approach with Kalman filter estimation algorithms are investigated to explore the affects of variations in the algorithms.
