Book Astronomical Polarisation from the Infrared to Gamma Rays

Download or read book Astronomical Polarisation from the Infrared to Gamma Rays written by Roberto Mignani and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as both a primer to astronomical polarimetry and an authoritative overview of its application to various types of astronomical objects from AGN, compact stars, binary systems, stars across the HR diagram, transients, the interstellar medium and solar system bodies. It starts with an historical perspective, a discussion of polarimetric theory, instrumentation and techniques in wave bands from the near infrared to gamma rays. The book presents the state of the art in astronomical polarimetry. It is motivated by the new X-ray polarimeters due to be launched in the next four years and improved optical polarimeters on large telescopes requiring a new analysis of polarimetric theory, methodology and results. This book will be suitable as advanced undergraduate companion text, a primer for graduate students and all researchers with an interest in astronomical polarimetry.

Book Science with Astronomical Near Infrared Sky Surveys

Download or read book Science with Astronomical Near Infrared Sky Surveys written by N. Epchtein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outstanding progress in near-infrared detection technology and in real-time image processing has led astronomers to start undertaking all-sky surveys in the 1--2 mum range (project DENIS in Europe and 2MASS in the U.S.A.), surveys which will have a considerable impact in various areas of astronomy. This book gathers the contributions of more than 80 specialists involved in fields of interest as different as low mass stars, late stages of stellar evolution, star formation, stellar populations of the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, the local structure of the Universe, and observational cosmology. It describes the impact on these fields of the exhaustive data bases and catalogs of stars and galaxies that these surveys will provide. The considerable interest of these documents for the future of infrared space and ground-based projects and the complementarity with other currently ongoing or planned surveys in other spectral ranges are emphasized.

Book Astronomy in the Near Infrared Observing Strategies and Data Reduction Techniques

Download or read book Astronomy in the Near Infrared Observing Strategies and Data Reduction Techniques written by Jochen Heidt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near-infrared astronomy has become one of the most rapidly developing branches in modern astrophysics. Innovative observing techniques, near-infrared detectors with quantum efficiencies in excess of 90%, highly specialised instruments as well as advanced data reduction techniques have allowed major breakthroughs in various areas like exoplanets, star-forming regions, the supermassive black hole in the Galactic center, and the high-redshift Universe. In this book, the reader will be introduced to the basic concepts of how to prepare near-infrared observations with maximized scientific return. Equal weight is given to all aspects of the data reduction for both - imaging and spectroscopy. Information is also provided on the state of the art instrumentation available and planned, on detector technology or the physics of the atmosphere, all of which influence the preparation and execution of observations and data reduction techniques. The beginner but also the expert will find a lot of information in compact form which is otherwise widely dispersed across the internet or other sources.

Book The Infrared Spectral Region of Stars

Download or read book The Infrared Spectral Region of Stars written by Carlos Jaschek and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-09-19 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a review of the work in progress on the infrared spectral region of stars. The most important previous mission, the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) was launched in 1983. Although it was only operating for one year, in that time it surveyed the whole sky for infrared emitters of many different kinds providing a fundamental catalogue of thousands of objects. As a consequence of its success, a new mission to observe the infrared sky is being planned. The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) is scheduled for a launch in May 1993. It should add substantially to our knowledge of the stars. The volume is based on the proceedings of an international conference held in Montpellier, France. It provided an excellent forum for the experts in the field to get together and evaluate the status of current knowledge and analyse the instrumentation.
