Book excerpt: "...Recorded two decades after the close of the Civil War ... of value as firsthand accounts of events, viewed from the central spot in the nation, in a crowded year of American history. They also constitute an informed appraisal of Lincoln by an observer from within the White House who worked as a member of the President's secretarial staff. Neill was on duty there more than a year, up to the tragic scenes of April 14 and 15, 1865, - and thereafter he continued in service under President Andrew Johnson." - introduction.

Book Educating the Engineer of 2020

Download or read book Educating the Engineer of 2020 written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-11-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educating the Engineer of 2020 is grounded by the observations, questions, and conclusions presented in the best-selling book The Engineer of 2020: Visions of Engineering in the New Century. This new book offers recommendations on how to enrich and broaden engineering education so graduates are better prepared to work in a constantly changing global economy. It notes the importance of improving recruitment and retention of students and making the learning experience more meaningful to them. It also discusses the value of considering changes in engineering education in the broader context of enhancing the status of the engineering profession and improving the public understanding of engineering. Although certain basics of engineering will not change in the future, the explosion of knowledge, the global economy, and the way engineers work will reflect an ongoing evolution. If the United States is to maintain its economic leadership and be able to sustain its share of high-technology jobs, it must prepare for this wave of change.

Book Training Engineers for Innovation

Download or read book Training Engineers for Innovation written by Denis Lemaître and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, engineers have been defined as those who bring technological innovation to society. However, the concept of innovation and the role of the engineer are now changing as a result of globalization, the digital revolution, growing inequalities and environmental concerns. Training Engineers for Innovation therefore analyzes the ways in which the educational systems for engineers are adapting to these new demands, as well as the conditions in which this training has developed. This book brings together the works of a consortium of researchers dedicated to the subject area as part of the Innov’Ing 2020 project. Its contributors present various means to devise effective pedagogies adapted to a holistic approach to innovation which incorporates the technical, economic, social, ethical and environmental dimensions of engineering.

Book Holistic Engineering Education

Download or read book Holistic Engineering Education written by Domenico Grasso and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holistic Engineering Education: Beyond Technology is a compilation of coordinated and focused essays from world leaders in the engineering profession who are dedicated to a transformation of engineering education and practice. The contributors define a new and holistic approach to education and practice that captures the creativity, interdisciplinarity, complexity, and adaptability required for the profession to grow and truly serve global needs. With few exceptions today, engineering students and professionals continue to receive a traditional, technically-based education and training using curriculum models developed for early 20th century manufacturing and machining. While this educational paradigm has served engineering well, helping engineers create awe-inspiring machines and technologies for society, the coursework and expectations of most engineering programs eschew breadth and intellectual exploration to focus on consistent technological precision and study. Why this dichotomy? While engineering will always need precise technological skill, the 21st century innovation economy demands a new professional perspective that recognizes the value of complex systems thinking, cross-disciplinary collaborations, economic and environmental impacts (sustainability), and effective communication to global and community leaders, thus enabling engineers to consider "the whole patient" of society's needs. The goal of this book is to inspire, lead, and guide this critically needed transformation of engineering education. "Holistic Engineering Education: Beyond Technology points the way to a transformation of engineering education and practice that will be sufficiently robust, flexible, and systems-oriented to meet the grand challenges of the 21st century with their ever-increasing scale, complexity, and transdisciplinary nature." -- Charles Vest, President, National Academy of Engineering; President Emeritus, MIT "This collection of essays provides compelling arguments for the need of an engineering education that prepares engineers for the problems of the 21st century. Following the National Academy’s report on the Engineer of 2020, this book brings together experts who make the case for an engineering profession that looks beyond developing just cool technologies and more into creating solutions that can address important problems to benefit real people." -- Linda Katehi, Chancellor, University of California at Davis "This superb volume offers a provocative portrait of the exciting future of engineering education...A dramatically new form of engineering education is needed that recognizes this field as a liberal art, as a profession that combines equal parts technical rigor and creative design...The authors challenge the next generation to engineering educators to imagine, think and act in new ways. " -- Lee S. Shulman, President Emeritus, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education Emeritus, Stanford University

Book Structural Integrity of Aging Airplanes

Download or read book Structural Integrity of Aging Airplanes written by Satya N. Atluri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of civil aviation as a means of mass transportation is primarily due to the large scale construction of jet airplanes in the past 30 years or so. A large number of these jet airplanes is currently operating at or beyond their designed fatigue lives. Thus, the structural integrity of these aging airplanes has become an issue of major concern to all nations of the world. To bring the needed technical and research focus on the issues involved in the life-enhancement and safety-assurance of aging airplanes, the Federal Aviation Administration sponsored a symposium in Atlanta, GA, USA, during 20-22 March 1990. This symposium, under the title "International Symposium on Structural Integrity of Aging Airplanes· was organized jointly be the Georgia Institute of Technology (Center for Computational Mechanics) and the Transportation Systems Center (Cambridge, MA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Industrial and academic experts from several countries in North America, Europe and Asia, were invited to discuss their experiences and proposed solutions. This monograph contains the original papers that represent the expanded and edited versions of the talks presented at this symposium. This book aims to bring the collective experience, from across the world, with problems related to the structural integrity of aging airplanes to the attention of the professional and research community at large - in the hope that it may stimulate further fruitful research on this important topic of global concern.

Book Skills Development for Engineers

Download or read book Skills Development for Engineers written by Kevin Hoag and published by IET. This book was released on 2001 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While classroom learning is suited for conveying basic information to large numbers of people, Hoag (Engine Research Center, U. of Wisconsin at Madison) argues that continuing education for engineers most often requires small groups of people to rapidly develop proficiencies. He discusses the roles of upper management, direct supervisors, and individual engineers in his proposed model for continuing education in organizations. After outlining the model, he discusses applications related to rotational programs, organizational assessment, and program evaluation. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
