At Cajal's direction, de Castro recorded all the protocols used by collaborators and disciples in Cajal ́s laboratory in order to provide a manual of histological procedures specifically designed for the fine structure of the nervous system. The text was first published a year before Cajal's death This renowned text is virtually unknown in its original form outside the Spanish-speaking world and is now available in English for the first time. In a text that reads like a mix between a recipe book and an alchemical manuscript, authors Miguel Merchán, Javier DeFelipe, and Fernando de Castro (only grandson of the 1933 publication's author) put the new translation by Jaime A. Merchán and Jorge Prieto into historical context. This pivotal work of classic neurohistological techniques is a wonderful addition to the Cajal library and includes beautifully illustrated with plates of histological techniques on original slides from the "Archivo Fernando de Castro", a quick guide to new vocabulary, and the author's notes on the translated text.
