Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lavishly presented, extraordinarily exhaustive study of the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris--one of Europe's masterpieces of Gothic architecture, and a building with a complex and still elusive history. The author describes in detail how the cathedral comprises a "stacking" of successive monuments, and how, over time, in a sequence of inspired building projects, the present structure took form. Giving particular attention to the cathedral's abundant sculpture, he explains early genesis of a cathedral on the site in the fourth century, how Clovis acquired it in the sixth century, the rebuilding which began in the 12th century, and the restoration in the 19th century. The oversize format (11x14") allows intimate viewing of the 260-plus illustrations, mostly photos (138 in color) and some line drawings. This English edition is translated (by John Goodman) from the French work (1997, Editions de la Martiniere, Paris). Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Download or read book The Hunchback of Notre Dame written by Victor Hugo and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historically significant novel of love and betrayal led to a renewed interest in preserving the grand architecture of Paris. Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame was written in 1831, at a time when the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was falling into disrepair. This epic novel helped spark a preservationist movement that led to the cathedral being restored to its full glory. Set in 1482, the story tells of how four men—the hunchbacked bell-ringer, Quasimodo; the archdeacon of Notre Dame, Claude Frollo; the dashing soldier Phoebus de Chateaupers; and the poet Pierre Gringoire—vie for the love of Esmeralda, a young Romani woman. As the story unfolds, readers come to realize that the focus of the story is not only on the human characters but on the grand cathedral itself.

Book Cajal and De Castro s Neurohistological Methods

Download or read book Cajal and De Castro s Neurohistological Methods written by Miguel A. Merchán and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cajal and de Castro's Neurohistological Methods provides the first English translation of Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Fernando de Castro's 1933 publication "Elementos de Técnica Micrográfica del Sistema Nervioso". Cajal is the famed founder of modern neuroscience and de Castro was particularly skilled for Histology among his pupils. At Cajal's direction, de Castro recorded all the protocols used by collaborators and disciples in Cajal ́s laboratory in order to provide a manual of histological procedures specifically designed for the fine structure of the nervous system. The text was first published a year before Cajal's death This renowned text is virtually unknown in its original form outside the Spanish-speaking world and is now available in English for the first time. In a text that reads like a mix between a recipe book and an alchemical manuscript, authors Miguel Merchán, Javier DeFelipe, and Fernando de Castro (only grandson of the 1933 publication's author) put the new translation by Jaime A. Merchán and Jorge Prieto into historical context. This pivotal work of classic neurohistological techniques is a wonderful addition to the Cajal library and includes beautifully illustrated with plates of histological techniques on original slides from the "Archivo Fernando de Castro", a quick guide to new vocabulary, and the author's notes on the translated text.

Book Churchill and de Gaulle

Download or read book Churchill and de Gaulle written by Will Morrisey and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful book provides a nuanced comparison of Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle as they thought, spoke, and acted through two world wars and the subsequent Cold War. Will Morrisey frames geopolitics as the realm of necessity, and his book will help those who want to learn the art of statesmanship from two of its most accomplished practitioners. Morrisey credits their success in defending political liberty to their ability to frame successful geopolitical strategies. As leaders in and out of power, they defended their countries against the rising superpowers of the twentieth century: the tyrannies of Germany and the Soviet Union, but also, in a different way, the challenge of America’s rise to worldwide stature and eventual dominance. Along with these similarities, there were two crucial differences: Churchill stood at the head of a maritime nation while de Gaulle led a land power situated on the dangerous northern European plain; Churchill enjoyed a stable political foundation and concentrated his attention on its defense while de Gaulle needed first to build such a foundation, even as he defended ill-founded regimes. Both leaders understood their supreme task to be the protection of their citizens as civil or political beings who should not be subject to tyranny. Although geopolitics focuses the attention of statesmen on political realities, Churchill and de Gaulle showed how moral principle and prudence can continue to widen the scope of human liberty. Although the world is vastly different today, this nuanced book shows how thinking along with these giants of the twentieth century as they responded to the crises of their own time will make us more thoughtful citizens now and in the future.

Book Social Policy Dismantling and De democratization in Brazil

Download or read book Social Policy Dismantling and De democratization in Brazil written by Sonia Fleury and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the emergence of authoritarian populist regimes, analyzing Brazil as a case study. The authors explain how the tactics employed by the Bolsonaro administration to dismantle bureaucracy and public policies, especially labour and social policies, find expression in the fiscal austerity measures recently inscribed in the Federal Constitution: a counter-democratic device employed by technical and financial elites to systemically derail the social protection system. Through this in-depth case study, the book presents new theoretical arguments and concepts that can be useful to understand the dynamics of such new regimes, and discussing similar cases in other contexts. Democratic governments in Brazil, driven by social movements and political actors, have strengthened social protection through a distinctive institutional architecture that combines the strengthening of public bureaucracies, the creation of intergovernmental networks, and the democratic instances of social participation and agreement. The contributions throughout this volume analyze these transformations in different sectors of public policy, such as labour, employment, pensions, food and nutrition security, health, and social assistance. Each contribution discusses the recent trajectory through a political analysis of the main actors and institutions, reform processes and policy changes, and the results achieved. Finally, the existing weaknesses in each of these social protection sectors are identified in the context of the literature on policy dismantling, revealing the strategies used to take advantage of these political and institutional weaknesses. This book will appeal to students, scholars, and researchers of political science and public policy, interested in a better understanding of de-democratization by social policy dismantling.

Book Redox Regulation of Differentiation and De differentiation

Download or read book Redox Regulation of Differentiation and De differentiation written by Carsten Berndt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell differentiation and the development of multicellular organisms are processes of self-assembly, controlled and driven by signaling molecules and cascades including redox regulation. These reactions may have provided the energy for the first metabolic steps in the evolution of life. Today, redox modifications are established as important regulatory events in cellular functions including differentiation and development. Redox modifications of single cysteines regulate differentiation of stem cells, formation of functioning organs, and de-differentiation such as formation of cancer cells. Current cancer therapy is based on redox events as well and regeneration often reactivates developmental pathways. Understanding differentiation and de-differentiation on a molecular level is therefore a prerequisite for the continuing development of new medical therapies. This book summarizes the roles of redox regulation in development by bringing together different concepts and comparing similarities and differences between various cell types and species. An international team of contributors presents several new aspects of redox-regulated differentiation and de-differentiation, including aspects of redox medicine. Key Features Provides the first summary on this important topic Reviews redox-dependent development of model organisms and single organs Highlights the redox-regulated pathways important for differentiation processes Illustrates the potential of redox medicine Combines state-of-the-art knowledge in differentiation/development, aging/longevity, and repair/regeneration Written by leading experts in the field Related Titles Ayyanathan, K., ed. Book Hyperidentities Boolean And De Morgan Structures

Download or read book Hyperidentities Boolean And De Morgan Structures written by Yuri Movsisyan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperidentities are important formulae of second-order logic, and research in hyperidentities paves way for the study of second-order logic and second-order model theory. This book illustrates many important current trends and perspectives for the field of hyperidentities and their applications, of interest to researchers in modern algebra and discrete mathematics. It covers a number of directions, including the characterizations of the Boolean algebra of n-ary Boolean functions and the distributive lattice of n-ary monotone Boolean functions; the classification of hyperidentities of the variety of lattices, the variety of distributive (modular) lattices, the variety of Boolean algebras, and the variety of De Morgan algebras; the characterization of algebras with aforementioned hyperidentities; the functional representations of finitely-generated free algebras of various varieties of lattices and bilattices via generalized Boolean functions (De Morgan functions, quasi-De Morgan functions, super-Boolean functions, super-De Morgan functions, etc); the structural results for De Morgan algebras, Boole-De Morgan algebras, super-Boolean algebras, bilattices, among others. While problems of Boolean functions theory are well known, the present book offers alternative, more general problems, involving the concepts of De Morgan functions, quasi-De Morgan functions, super-Boolean functions, and super-De Morgan functions, etc. In contrast to other generalized Boolean functions discovered and investigated so far, these functions have clearly normal forms. This quality is of crucial importance for their applications in pure and applied mathematics, especially in discrete mathematics, quantum computation, quantum information theory, quantum logic, and the theory of quantum computers.
