Book Structural Shielding Design for Medical X ray Imaging Facilities

Download or read book Structural Shielding Design for Medical X ray Imaging Facilities written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and published by NCRP. This book was released on 2004 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report No. 147 (2004) presents recommendations and technical information related to the design and installation of structural shielding for facilities that use x rays for medical imaging. The purpose of structural shielding is to limit radiation exposure to employees and members of the public. The information supersedes the recommendations that address such facilities in NCRP Report No. 49, Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X Rays and Gamma Rays of Energies Up to 10 MeV, which was issued in September 1976. NCRP Report No. 147 includes a discussion of the various factors to be considered in the selection of appropriate shielding materials and in the calculation of barrier thicknesses. The Report presents the fundamentals of radiation shielding, discusses shielding design goals for controlled and uncontrolled areas in or near x-ray imaging facilities and defines the relationship of these goals to the NCRP effective dose limits for radiation workers and members of the public. The Report includes a detailed discussion of the recommended shielding design methodology for x-ray imaging facilities and provides an extensive collection of shielding data and sample shielding calculations for various types of x-ray imaging facilities. The Report is mainly intended for those individuals who specialize in radiation protection. However, it will also be of interest to architects, hospital administrators and related professionals concerned with the planning of new facilities that use x rays for medical imaging.

Book Medical Radiation Exposure of Patients in the United States

Download or read book Medical Radiation Exposure of Patients in the United States written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This Report is an update 10 y after the publication of NCRP Report No. 160 (NCRP 2009) and is focused on 2016 doses to patients from medical exposures. Occupational doses and doses to caregivers are not included. Discussion of any potential risks and benefits of the use of medical exposures was beyond NCRP's scope of work. Several metrics are estimated as follows: number and type of procedures involving patient diagnostic and interventional medical radiation procedures; effective dose per procedure which is a calculated dose based upon the type of radiation and the radiation detriment (associated primarily with the induction of cancer) in tissues exposed (risk factors are based on average population characteristics and derive from linear nonthreshold assumptions); collective effective dose which is the number of procedures multiplied by the effective dose per procedure; and annual average individual effective dose which is the collective effective dose divided by the U.S. population, whether the persons were exposed or not, and allows comparison of the magnitude of medical radiation exposure to that from various nonmedical sources"--

Book Limitation of Exposure to Ionizing Radiation

Download or read book Limitation of Exposure to Ionizing Radiation written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and published by NCRP. This book was released on 1993 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NCRP Report No. 116 is the latest in the long series of reports on basic radiation protection criteria that began in 1934. It supersedes the predecessor in the series, NCRP Report No. 91, which was published in 1987. The current Report takes advantage of new information, evaluations and thinking that have developed since 1987, particularly the risk estimate formulations set out in NCRP Report No. 115. While the recommendations set out in this Report do not constitute a radical revision of the basic criteria, they do represent a refinement of the system enunciated in Report No. 91. Important changes include the utilization of revised tissue/organ weighting factors and the introduction of radiation weighting factors. Also noteworthy is the introduction of an allowable reference level of intake. Noteworthy too is the recommendation of an age-based lifetime limit for control of occupational exposures and a major simplification of limits aimed at controlling the exposure of the embryo and fetus. This Report, after outlining the goals and philosophy of radiation protection and the basis for exposure limits, goes on to review, in some detail, absorbed dose, equivalent dose, radiation weighting factors, and effective dose. Committed equivalent dose and committed effective dose are also introduced. Risk estimates for radiation exposure are presented and then the dose limits are enunciated. The Report also covers exposure in excess of the limits, limits for unusual occupational situations, guidance for emergency occupational exposure, and remedial action levels for naturally occurring radiation.

Book Deriving Organ Doses for Medical Radiation Workers Using Personal Monitoring Data with a Focus on Lung

Download or read book Deriving Organ Doses for Medical Radiation Workers Using Personal Monitoring Data with a Focus on Lung written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this Commentary is to describe an optimum approach for using personal monitoring data to estimate lung and other organ doses. The Commentary highlights specific precautions applicable to epidemiologic study of medical radiation workers. Such guidance is important as organ doses, along with associated epidemiologic analyses for both female and male populations are necessary to assist the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's need to assess sex-specific lung cancer risks and radiation limits currently in place for female astronauts noting differences between the medical and space radiation environments"--

Book Radiation Protection in Dentistry and Oral Maxillofacial Imaging

Download or read book Radiation Protection in Dentistry and Oral Maxillofacial Imaging written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this Report is to enhance radiation safety in dentistry and to reinforce published, well-known dose-reduction methods that are not yet being widely applied in the day-to-day practice of dentistry. The technological advances since NCRP Report No. 145 require changing attitudes and practices of dentists because opportunities are now available for decreasing radiation doses while maintaining or improving diagnostic efficacy. This Report updates the information in NCRP Report No.145, adds new content on digital imaging, handheld x-ray devices, and CBCT, and makes recommendations for reducing patient radiation doses while maintaining or improving image quality, all in the context of the ALARA principle"--
