Two years after Jean Amery's On Suicide was published in 1976, the author took an overdose of sleeping pills. He was 65. In 1960, some eighteen years after Albert Camus had raised and - so he thought - resolved the question of suicide in The Myth of Sisyphus, he was killed in a car accident. He is alleged to have said that dying in a car crash is the most absurd of all deaths. The absurdity of his death is compounded by the fact he had an unused train ticket in his pocket. He was 46. Let me say at the outset, at the risk of disappointing the reader, that I have no plans to kill myself ... just yet. Nor do I wish to join the chorus of those who proclaim loudly against suicide and claim that the act of taking one's own life is irresponsible and selfish, even shameful and cowardly, that people must stay alive whatever the cost. Suicide, in my view, is neither a legal nor moral offence, and should not be seen as such. My intention here is to simply try to understand the phenomenon, the act itself, what precedes it and what follows. I'd like to consider suicide from the point of view of those who have made the leap, or have come close to it-we might even find that the capacity to take that leap is what picks us out as humans. I want to look at suicide closely, carefully, and perhaps a little coldly, without immediately leaping to judgements or asserting moral principles like the right to life or death. We have to look suicide in the face, long and hard, and see what features, what profile, what inherited character traits and wrinkles emerge. Perhaps what we see when we look closely is our own distorted reflection staring back at us.

My sketches and photos help set the scene for each short story, which stands alone but is more or less in order of events and seasons. The sketches also signify that I qualify as a starving artist. The twenty-five percent unemployment in our community led to many people living on the edge of starvation. Families lived in houses without electricity, water, or central heating, and their lives were not complicated by bathrooms, air conditioning, television, computer games, or cell phones. The outhouse was on the alley, and house water came from well pumps or a neighbor's faucet. Schools and parents demanded strict discipline, and education was important. Most families were striving to survive and rear their children to be law-abiding citizens. Children spent time in the fresh air, organized their own games, and roamed the streets, fields, or woodlands. However, they were assigned home chores and expected to contribute to the family. The Greatest Generation saved our country and the freedom we have enjoyed for three-quarters of a century.

By background and temperament, William Fisk (Bill) Harrah was ill-prepared to succeed in such a business when he opened a small bingo parlor in Reno in 1937, but by the mid-1960s his Harrah's Clubs were the most profitable casino gaming operations in America, and he had become the de facto leader of the industry. Bill Harrah's life and career were rich with paradox. The privileged son of a southern California attorney, Harrah lasted less than one term in college before sliding into a profession which at the time was largely populated with cheap hustlers and petty crooks. Harrah was honest, but he was also a drunk and a womanizer and a habitual gambler, and for years it appeared that he would never amount to much. When his second wife got him off the bottle, he focussed his attention on building his business, but he never really cared for it. Bill Harrah's passion was old automobiles: he sank tens of millions of his company's dollars into buying and restoring them.
