The Navy's planned 313-ship fleet calls for a total of 19 CG(X)s. The Navy would like to use the design of its new DDG-1000 destroyer as the basis for its planned CG(X) cruiser. Ships based on other hull designs are possible. Nuclear propulsion is an option being studied for the CG(X).

The Navy wants to procure 19 CG(X)s as replacements for its 22 existing Ticonderoga (CG-47) class Aegis cruisers. The Navy wants the CG(X) to be a highly capable multi-mission ship with an emphasis on air defense and ballistic missile defense (BMD). The Navy has not yet announced a preferred design concept for the CG(X). Observers were expecting the Navy to announce a preferred design concept in late 2007/early 2008, but such an announcement is now expected to occur no earlier than late 2008/early 2009. The Navy originally intended to use the design of its new DDG-1000 destroyer as the basis for the CG(X) design, but it is no longer clear that this is still the Navy's preferred approach. Although the Navy's FY2009 budget calls for procuring the first CG(X) in FY2011, press reports state that the Navy may defer the scheduled procurement of the first ship to FY2015 or later. [...] Although the CG(X) AOA is examining a wide range of design options for the CG(X), the Navy has publicly stated on several occasions that it prefers a CG(X) design based on the design of its new 14,500-ton DDG-1000 destroyer.
