Book excerpt: Abstract: This study delved into the realm of inclusive education within the Indian context, focusing on the perceptions and recommendations of educators. Drawing upon comprehensive review of existing literature, the research objectives were formulated to address gaps and provide insights into the multifaceted aspects of inclusive education. A structured questionnaire was administered to 392 participants, encompassing demographic characteristics, attitudes towards inclusive education, perceived challenges and benefits, and additional insights through open-ended questions. Analysis of the data revealed nuanced findings, including a balanced gender distribution among participants, a robust belief in the benefits of inclusive education, and widespread recognition of its academic and social development benefits. Challenges such as resource inadequacy and workload implications were also acknowledged, underscoring the need for targeted interventions and support mechanisms. Standardized recommendations derived from the findings aimed to guide future research and policy interventions towards fostering a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape in India. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to discover Florida International University student teachers' perceptions and experiences about inclusive education during their student teaching internship. A total of 271 student teachers (all those enrolled in Spring 06 and Fall 06 student teaching) participated. A mixed methods design was utilized to analyze the impact of participation in a mandatory one-day hands-on seminar related to inclusive education instructional strategies. At the end of their student teaching semester, interns completed a specially designed survey to assess perceptions about their student teaching experience with respect to inclusive education. Differences related to gender, major, linguistic and ethnic diversity, prior experiences with inclusive education, awareness of children with disabilities in their student teaching classrooms, student teacher classroom settings, inclusion strategies implemented by student teachers, attitudes and beliefs about inclusion were identified through Chi Square analyses. Qualitative interviews validated and instantiated the survey results. Implications for action in teacher preparation and further research are discussed. (Contains 6 tables.).

The Act states that schools have a duty to educate children with disabilities in general education classrooms. All children with disabilities should be educated with non-disabled children at their own age and have access to the general education curriculum. The philosophy of inclusive education aims at helping all children learn in regular classrooms. Children learn at their own pace and style within a nurturing learning environment because schools are important places for children to develop friendships and learn social skills. Children with and without disabilities learn together and from each other in inclusive classes. On the other hand, when children attend classes that reflect the similarities and differences of people in the real world, they learn to appreciate diversity. The aim of this study is to examine the perceptions of teachers about implementation of inclusive education in elementary schools. In order to collect data for this study, a questionnaire which consisted of eight open-ended questions was developed and administered to 66 elementary school teachers. The teachers worked at primary schools and taught 1-5 grades. They were asked to write their opinions and experiences about the implementation of inclusive education in the elementary schools. Primary school teachers generally have a positive attitude about inclusive education and its philosophical and psychological foundation. However, they express that they encounter some difficulties in implementing inclusive classrooms. A crowded classroom is a main obstacle to obtain desired objectives in educational activities. The levels of students' disability are related to effectiveness of classroom management. The effectiveness of inclusive education depends on not only the teachers' quality but also the school administrators'. Some superintendents assess the effectiveness of teachers in inclusive and regular classrooms in the same way. The research questions focused on teachers' experiences of educating students with disabilities in mainstream schools; the advantages and challenges of educating students with disabilities in mainstream schools; ways in which the needs of students with disabilities could be addressed; and the skills teachers required to provide sufficient support for students with disabilities. The study participants were 15 special education teachers from Thika East District who had been teaching students with disabilities in their classrooms. The results of this study reveal that most of the teachers had positive perceptions of inclusion of students with disabilities in mainstream classrooms. The perceptions were subject to several factors such as level of training, support and collaboration from administrators and the community, availability of resources and materials, school infrastructure, large class size and the degree of disability. Overall, this study revealed that teachers' perceptions influence how teachers and schools adopt, implement, and commit to the inclusion agenda.
