Book Talking about Naval History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT ON THIS PRINT PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Significantly reduced list price Twenty essays selected from the writings of John B. Hattendorf, Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History at the U.S. Naval War College, between 2001 and 2009. They represent a wide historical perspective that ranges across nearly four centuries of maritime history. A number of these pieces have been published previously but have appeared in other languages and in other countries, where they may not have come to the attention of an American naval reading audience. This collection is divided into parts that deal with four major themes: the broad field of maritime history; general naval history, with specific focus on the classical age of sail, from the mid-seventeenth century to the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815; the wide scope of American naval history from 1775 to the end of the twentieth century; and finally, the realm of naval theory and its relationship to naval historical studies. They are reprinted, with only minor alterations, as they originally appeared. This work may appeal to general history readers, scholarly and general adult readers of history especially naval and maritime, plus students pursuing coursework in military science degree programs. Book The Citizen s Guide to the U S Navy

Download or read book The Citizen s Guide to the U S Navy written by Thomas J Cutler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s Navy is a massive and complex organization, with hundreds of ships, thousands of aircraft, hundreds of thousands of people, and an annual budget in the billions of dollars that make the U.S. Navy a powerful and important component of the American defense establishment, playing a vital role in maintaining our national security, protecting us against our enemies in time of war, and guarding our economic lifelines and supporting our foreign policy in peacetime. Despite its obvious importance, most Americans know very little about their Navy, and learning about it has been a daunting task. Until now. Derived from another Naval Institute Press book by the same author, NavCivGuide: A Handbook for Civilians in the United States Navy (which is used by civilians who work for the Department of the Navy), this informative book is a highly accessible guide that explains the strange ways of the Navy in terms that non-Sailors can understand. In ten short chapters, the author reveals such things as the many titles that military people have, the various alphanumeric designations that military personnel use to identify and distinguish themselves, the organization of the Navy and the Department of Defense, the origins and practices of such things as saluting, flag etiquette, side boys, and odd language (such as “aye-aye”), and an explanation of the many missions of the Navy. Also included is an introduction to the Navy’s colorful history, a primer on the various ships and aircraft that make up today’s fleet, a guide to “reading” a uniform, and the demystification of such things as the phonetic alphabet and military time. Designed to be an easy read for those who want the whole story, The Citizen’s Guide to the Navy is also a useful reference work. Each chapter ends with a section called “QuickRefs,” which are lists of the essential facts presented in the chapter itself. While not everyone need be an expert on the Navy, there is a middle ground that this book serves by providing a readable, edifying, and often entertaining explanation of this important but sometimes mysterious branch of the U.S. armed forces.

Book Digesting History The U S Naval War College The Lessons of World War Two and Future Naval Warfare 1945 1947

Download or read book Digesting History The U S Naval War College The Lessons of World War Two and Future Naval Warfare 1945 1947 written by Hal M. Friedman and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2010-12-20 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product Description: Digesting History: The U.S. Naval War College, the Lessons of World War II, and Future Naval Warfare, 1945–1947, by Professor Hal M. Friedman, studies the contribution of the Naval War College, especially in the presidency of Admiral Raymond Spruance, to strategic thought during the first critical postwar years—that is, between the end of the war and the formulation of Containment. This transition period is especially valuable as a window through which to explore institutions such as the College in transition from a hot war to a cold one. While seminal studies exist of the College’s work in the interwar years, none have been published on this period.

Book excerpt: "On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Naval Academy, the Naval Institute Press takes pleasure in presenting a new edition of its now-classic illustrated history of the Academy. First published in 1979, the book has been updated to include the revolutionary changes of the 1980s and the challenges of the early-to-mid-1990s at an institution steeped in tradition yet adapting to change. This second edition has been prepared by Thomas J. Cutler, a recently retired naval officer and historian who taught at the Academy during the very years he writes about. His new chapters pick up where those of the original author, former Academy history professor Jack Sweetman, left off." "Certain to remain a favorite of Annapolis graduates, their families and friends, naval buffs, and those eager to learn about life at the Academy, this handsome book includes more than 200 photographs, paintings, and drawings covering all fifteen decades of the Academy's colorful history. It is a stirring story filled with entertaining anecdotes as well as authoritative accounts of the Academy's evolution from its modest beginnings as a naval training school in an unwanted army fort to a 300-acre showcase facility that has become one of the nation's leading baccalaureate institutions."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: The success of the U.S. Navy in its more than two centuries of existence is due not only to the essential contributions of Sailors on active duty and in the reserve, but to the civilians who have worked as part of the Navy since its earliest days. But active and reserve Sailors go to boot camp or officer candidate school to prepare them for their new (unique) occupation. And the Navy has long provided The Bluejacket’s Manual to incoming Sailors to serve as an introduction and as a continuing reference so that they will feel more comfortable in a new and otherwise alien world, where floors suddenly become decks, where 1337 is a time in the here-and-now instead of a date from ancient history, and where uniforms are anything but! While it is impractical to send all civilian workers to a centralized indoctrination course, it is possible to provide a common reference, specially designed to acquaint civilians with this very special world they have entered. This book is that common reference guide designed specifically for those civilians, who like the Sailors in the Fleet, serve the nation and the Navy, and who need help in understanding where they are and what it is all about. All organizations and occupations have their own idiosyncrasies, and a big step toward “fitting in” has always been learning how to “talk the talk and walk the walk.” Like The Bluejacket’s Manual, this guide provides the words and steps needed to serve as an introduction for new employees and as a ready reference for veteran workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the history of one of the nation's most prestigious service schools in The Naval War College. It was appropriate that the U.S. Navy's pioneer training station and principal graduate college be established at Newport. Known as "The City by the Sea," Newport, Rhode Island, has a long history of maritime activity. As far back as the colonial period, Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay have always been safe and deep havens for naval as well as commercial shipping. In 1883, Commodore Stephen B. Luce established the Naval Training Station on Coaster's Harbor Island in Newport, which became the forerunner of the modern recruit stations for enlisted men in the U.S. Navy. The next year, in 1884, Luce established the Naval War College, the first professional naval education center of its kind in the world. It soon became the U.S. Navy's premier institution for professional studies of warfare, international law, and statesmanship relating to war and peace. Among others, Luce brought to the college Capt. Alfred Thayer Mahan, the naval historian whose book, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1600-1783, and other works influenced naval thought throughout the world.
