Book The Role of Experimentation in Building Future Naval Forces

Download or read book The Role of Experimentation in Building Future Naval Forces written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-01-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Defense is in the process of transforming the nation's armed forces to meet the military challenges of the 21st century. Currently, the opportunity exists to carry out experiments at individual and joint service levels to facilitate this transformation. Experimentation, which involves a spectrum of activities including analyses, war games, modeling and simulation, small focused experiments, and large field events among other things, provides the means to enhance naval and joint force development. To assist the Navy in this effort, the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) asked the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study to examine the role of experimentation in building future naval forces to operate in the joint environment. The NRC formed the Committee for the Role of Experimentation in Building Future Naval Forces to perform the study.

Book Distributed Remote Sensing for Naval Undersea Warfare

Download or read book Distributed Remote Sensing for Naval Undersea Warfare written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-07-12 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread availability of quiet, diesel electric submarines and inexpensive mines is posing a growing threat to global access by the U.S. Navy. In response, the Navy has expanded its undersea warfare efforts and put particular emphasis on the potential for new distributed remote sensing (DRS) approaches. To assist with this effort, the former Chief of Naval Operations requested the NRC to conduct an assessment of DRS for naval undersea warfare. This report provides a clear, near-term path by which useful DRS systems can be applied rapidly to pressing naval USW problems, and by which ongoing science and technology efforts can be directed toward the most useful options. The report contains information as described in 5 U.S.C. 552(b) and therefore could not be released to the public in its entirety. The public version consists of the front matter and executive summary.

Book Business as Usual An Assessment of Donald Rumsfeld s Transformation Vision and Transformation s Prospects for the Future

Download or read book Business as Usual An Assessment of Donald Rumsfeld s Transformation Vision and Transformation s Prospects for the Future written by Mark G. Czelusta and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Rumsfeld¿s vision of a transformed U.S. military has been discussed by many and understood by few, and this lack of understanding has resulted in both significant simplifications and sweeping generalizations. If Rumsfeld¿s Transformation is indeed dead, does this mean that Transformation as a greater process is dead as well? This report discusses the answers to this question, which requires one to understand first that ¿Rumsfeld¿s Transformation Vision (RTV)¿ is the result of multiple influences that predate his time in office. Second, RTV is actually an umbrella term for 3 different things: a new way of war, a process, and a defense strategy. And third, the military services shaped, and at times limited, the effectiveness of his program. Illus.

Book The Implementation of Network Centric Warfare

Download or read book The Implementation of Network Centric Warfare written by and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2005 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world enters a new millennium, the U.S. military simultaneously enters a new era in warfare -- an era in which warfare is affected by a changing strategic environment and rapid technological change. The United States and its multinational partners are experiencing a transition from the Industrial Age to the Information Age. Simultaneously, it is fully engaged in a global war on terrorism set in a new period of globalization. These changes, as well as the experiences gained during recent and ongoing military operations, have resulted in the current drive to transform the force with network-centric warfare (NCW) as the centerpiece of this effort. This document describes how the tenets and principles of NCW are providing the foundation for developing new warfighting concepts, organizations, and processes that will allow U.S. forces to maintain a competitive advantage over potential adversaries, now and in the future. In sum, the report provides an overview of the ongoing implementation of NCW in the Department of Defense (DoD). A brief description of NCW, including its origins, its central role in force transformation, its tenets and principles, and an implementation strategy, are provided in Chapter 1. An examination of NCW as an emerging theory of war, its relationship to the four domains of Information Age warfare, the growing evidence of its benefits, and the warfighting advantages it can provide are examined in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 focuses on network-centric operations (NCO), including the relationship of NCO to the overarching Joint Operations Concepts (JOpsC), the NCO experience in Afghanistan and Iraq, the development of the NCO Conceptual Framework, and the conduct of NCO case studies. An overview of Joint and Service plans and initiatives to develop and implement network-centric capabilities and the growing investment in these capabilities by our allies and multinational partners are provided in Chapter 4.

Book Retrofit for Purpose

Download or read book Retrofit for Purpose written by Greg Penoyre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retrofit for Purpose examines a range of state-of-the-art non-domestic retrofit projects. Its chapters explore common challenges, offer practical solutions and provide a clarion-call to architects and clients for better, smarter retrofit. Twelve case studies focus as much on the transformation of usability and image as on the improvements in the energy and resource use of non-domestic buildings. While an essay section places these projects into a wider context, suggesting that despite the importance of sharing and analysing data, there is more to retrofit than just energy efficiency. The authors take a range of other retrofit variables: from client ambition to tenure, budget, use type, age, context, fashion and fiscal arrangements and assess how retrofit can be made affordable, how it fits in with wider government policy and how performance can be measured.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the current state of the global security system, and where is it headed? What challenges and opportunities do we face, and what dangers are emerging? How will various regions of the world be affected? How can the United States best act to help shape the future while protecting its security, interests, and values? How can the United States deal with the threats of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction? An intellectual history of U.S. national security thinking since the end of the fall of the Soviet Union, Seeing the Elephant is an attempt to see the evolving international security system and America’s role in it through the eyes of more than fifty perceptive authors who have analyzed key aspects of the unfolding post–Cold War drama. Its premise is that, like the blind men in the Buddhist fable who each feels a different part of an elephant, these authors and their assessments, taken together, can give us a better view of where the world is headed.

Book Organization Development in the Largest Global Organization

Download or read book Organization Development in the Largest Global Organization written by Robert L. Reinhard and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military, as the core constituent of the Department of Defense, collectively represents the largest and most complex organization on earth. As such, the U.S. military implemented the largest formal OD programs in the world. These programs, from inception to present day, utilized diverse and evolving OD intervention typologies to garner congruence with the environment. The research for this book, accomplished using an inductive, grounded theory approach, examined the initiatives that fostered the use of OD intervention typologies. The findings revealed three major epochs of OD interventions that span a 50-year timeline. The epochs include: (1) Traditional OD; (2) Total Quality Management (TQM); and (3) Continuous Process Improvement (CPI). The epoch of Traditional OD represents the use of human process interventions while TQM and CPI represent the use of technostructural interventions. In the end, the relationship between organization design and culture, and the selection of OD intervention typologies, were best explained using variables that explicate diverse environmental occurrences that influenced senior military leaders’ perceived need for specific OD interventions. These perceived needs were predicated on the requirement to exploit vital resources in an effort to bolster warfighting operational readiness in support of the American citizenry.
