Book excerpt: This book is compiled from the records maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission of servicemen and women killed or missing since the start of the First World War in 1914. The book is divided into 10 sections that contain details of the location within the site where United Kingdom or Australian service personnel who were one of five or less of their particular service rank to lose their lives are commemorated. Book The Foreign Burial of American War Dead

Download or read book The Foreign Burial of American War Dead written by Chris Dickon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normandy, Flanders Field and other overseas cemeteries of the American Battle Monument Commission (ABMC) are well known. However, lesser-known burial sites of American war dead exist all over the world—in Australia and across the Pacific Rim, in Canada and Mexico, Libya and Spain, most of Europe and as far north as the Russian Arctic. This is the history of American soldiers buried abroad since the American Revolution. It traces the evolution of American attitudes and practices about war dead and provides the names and locations of those still buried abroad in non–ABMC locations.

  • Publisher : Lulu.com
  • Release : 2015-10-21
  • ISBN : 132645420X
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book More Than Just A Name written by Frank Bull, Chris Bonnett, Steve Adamson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As its title suggests this is not just a list of names and dates but a serious research into the people behind the names on the various WW2 memorials in Bridlington including all the old boys of Bridlington School who died in WW2. The book begins with a detailed look at where the memorials are, when they were made and the names that appear on them. This is followed by the roll of honour itself, an alphabetical listing which gives a full page to each person named on the memorials. The Authors have used 'typical' family history resources in order to give as much biographical detail as possible, who they were, their parents, husbands / wives and children, where and how they died and what they did before enlistment. Some died in well-known land battles, some went down with their ships, while others were in aircraft that failed to return home. Not all were in the armed forces and these met their deaths through bombing raids and accidents of war. This is their story.

Book Beneath a Turkish Sky

Download or read book Beneath a Turkish Sky written by Philip Lecane and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the First World War's largest seaborne invasion and the Irish were at the forefront. Recruited in Ireland, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers were ordered to spearhead the invasion of Gallipoli in Turkey. Deadlocked in trench warfare on the Western Front, the British High Command hoped the assault would Germany's ally out of the war. Using letters and photographs, this book tells the story of the 'Dubs' officers and men called from an idyllic posting in India to be billeted on the civilian population in England. They then set off on what was presented as a great adventure to win glory and capture Constantinople. The book also gives the story of the Turkish defenders and the locality being invaded. Accompanied by the Royal Munster Fusiliers, packed aboard the SS River Clyde, the 'Dubs' landed from ships boats on the fiercely defended beach at Sedd-el-Bahr. The song The Foggy Dew says, "It were better to die beneath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sedd-el-Bahr." This book tells the story of the forgotten Irishmen who died beneath a Turkish sky in what was Ireland's D-Day.
