Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abolishment of flogging in 1850 started the U.S. Navy on a quest for a prison system that culminated with the opening of Portsmouth Naval Prison in 1908. During World War I, that prison became the center of the Navy’s attempt to reform what many considered outdated means of punishment. Driven by Progressive Era ideals and led by Thomas Mott Osborne, cell doors remained opened, inmates governed themselves, and thousands of rehabilitated prisoners were returned to the fleet. Championed by Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels and Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin Roosevelt, Osborne’s reforms proceeded positively until Vice Adm. William. Sims and others became convinced that too many troublemakers were being returned to the fleet. In response, FDR led an on-site investigation of conditions at Portsmouth prison, which included charges of gross mismanagement and rampant homosexual activity. Although exonerated, Osborne resigned and initiatives were quickly reversed as the Navy returned to a harsher system.

Download or read book An Essay On Naval Discipline Shewing Part Of Its Evil Effects On The Minds Of The Officers On The Minds Of The Men And On The Community With An Am written by Hodgskin Thomas and published by Legare Street Press. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1813, this groundbreaking work by Thomas Hodgskin is a scathing critique of the British Navy and its system of press gangs. Drawing on his own experiences as a sailor, Hodgskin exposes the brutality and injustice of the press gang system, arguing that it not only harms the sailors who are forced into service, but also undermines the moral and political fabric of the nation. With a compelling mix of personal testimony, political analysis and economic theory, this is a book that played a key role in shaping the debate on naval discipline, and continues to be of relevance to historians and political theorists today. Book Morale and Discipline in the Royal Navy during the First World War

Download or read book Morale and Discipline in the Royal Navy during the First World War written by Laura Rowe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to the voluminous literature on trench warfare, few scholarly works have been written on how the First World War was experienced at sea. The conditions of war challenged the Royal Navy's position within British national identity and its own service ethos. This challenge took the form of a dialogue, fuelled by fear of civil unrest, between the discourses of paternalism from above and democratism from below. Laura Rowe explores issues of morale and discipline, using the contemporary language of discipline to shed light on key questions of how the service was able to absorb indiscipline with marked success through a subtle web of loyalties, history, ethos, traditions and customs, which were rooted in older notions of service but moulded by the new conditions of total war. In so doing, she provides not only a new methodological framework for understanding morale, but also military discipline and leadership.
