Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Brigades in the South African War, 1899-1900 Despite the fact that so much has already been written on the subject, I feel assured that this little contribution to the history Of the struggle in South Africa needs neither explanation nor excuse. It is the story Of how, at a time when their comrades of the land service were in dire need of help, the seamen hastened to place their ships' guns on improvised carriages, took them ash ore, and in the nick of tims enabled our military forces to cope on equal terms with the Boer artillery. Book excerpt: If the part played by the Royal Navy in the Boer War has been overlooked among all the land based operations then this book will help to put matters right; the naval guns, brought ashore on improvised carriages, enabled the army to cope on equal terms with the Boer artillery and Royal Marines supplemented army units. A brigade of 17 officers and 267 men was at Ladysmith with guns to match those of the Boers; 33 died, of these one officer and five men were battle casualties , 27 (two of them officers) died from disease. And naval gun detachments outside the town played a big part in the relief. Another brigade, in Cape Colony, joined Lord Methuen s Kimberley relief force and took part in the battle of Belmont on 23 November 1899. Two days later a brigade which included 200 marines were in action at Graspan (also known as the battle of Enslin), a strong Boer position, and in the operations leading to its capture the marines lost 3 officers and 86 men of a total casualty list of 9 officers and 185 men. This is a comprehensive account of operations involving naval and marine units and appendices include casualty details, names of officers and details of honours and awards, including mention in despatches.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South African War, 1899-1900: A Military Retrospect Up to the Relief of Ladysmith In submitting these pages to readers already, in many cases, as well informed as myself, I should explain that I did not at first intend to do so; rather, in collecting material for a monthly article on the War for my brother officers, I began to wish for an impartial account from a military point of view. Thanks to the kind assistance of the R.E. Institute with the maps and plans, I am now enabled to hope that what has afforded pleasure to me may become of some use to others. As some may think the criticisms in these pages are personal, and hardly become my comparative inexperience, I would say that, in accepting a command, one's own friends and teachers become public characters, and, rightly, the subjects of public criticism; also I venture to think that they would prefer criticism to come from the pen of a brother officer, earnestly seeking the truth, rather than from that of a literary or journalistic genius. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The "Last Post" Being a Roll of All Officers (Naval, Military or Colonial) Who Gave Their Lives for Their Queen, King and Country, in the South African War, 1899-1902 The work done by the lady nurses was beyond all praise. Surely, then, those who have given their lives in the discharge of such a duty should have their names recorded in a book of this kind. Book The Naval Brigade in Natal

Download or read book The Naval Brigade in Natal written by C. R. N. Burne and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the big guns of the Royal Navy in South Africa During the history of warfare-particularly during the nineteenth century-there has been the need to employ naval brigades for duty on land fighting alongside the army. Both the Indian Mutiny and the Zulu War saw sailors in action far from their ships. The Boer War was no exception. Although essentially a citizen army the Boer forces often had superiority of firepower as a result of the adoption of up to date weaponry. All Armies, the British included, lagged behind-trusting to the tried rather than the innovative. Artillery was ever the master of the battlefield however and there is an overwhelming power to naval guns served by naval gunners which is almost impossible to counter by forces lacking the same facility. The author of this book, C. R. N. Burne was a serving naval officer and one of those detached for such duty during the conflict in South Africa. His story is full of interesting detail of life on campaign and the of the guns themselves in action.

Book A Military History of South Africa

Download or read book A Military History of South Africa written by Timothy J. Stapleton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-04-09 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers the first one-volume comprehensive military history of modern South Africa. A Military History of South Africa: From the Dutch-Khoi Wars to the End of Apartheid represents the first comprehensive military history of South Africa from the beginning of European colonization in the Cape during the 1650s to the current postapartheid republic. With particular emphasis on the last 200 years, this balanced analysis stresses the historical importance of warfare and military structures in the shaping of modern South African society. Important themes include military adaptation during the process of colonial conquest and African resistance, the growth of South Africa as a regional military power from the early 20th century, and South African involvement in conflicts of the decolonization era. Organized chronologically, each chapter reviews the major conflicts, policies, and military issues of a specific period in South African history. Coverage includes the wars of colonial conquest (1830-69), the diamond wars (1869-81), the gold wars (1886-1910), World Wars I and II (1910-45), and the apartheid wars (1948-94).
