Book British Naval Power in the East 1794 1805

Download or read book British Naval Power in the East 1794 1805 written by Peter A. Ward and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shows how Rainier skillfully coped with the immense difficulties of maintaining British naval power in a huge area fraught with difficult circumstances. When war broke out with France in 1793, there immediately arose the threat of a renewed French challenge to British supremacy in India. This security problem was compounded in 1795 when the French overran the Netherlands and the extremely valuable Dutch trade routes and Dutch colonies, including the Cape of Good Hope and what is now Indonesia, fell under French control. The task of securing British interests in the East was a formidable one: the distanceswere huge, communication with London could take years, there were problems marshalling resources, and fine diplomatic skills were needed to keep independent rulers on the British side and to ensure full co-operation from the EastIndia Company. The person charged with overseeing this formidable task was Admiral Peter Rainier (1741-1808), commander of the Royal Navy in the Indian Ocean and the East from 1794 to 1805. This book discusses the enormous difficulties Rainier faced. It outlines his career, explaining how he carried out his role with exceptional skill; how he succeeded in securing British interests in the East - whilst avoiding the need to fight a major battle; how he enhanced Britain's commanding position at sea; and how, additionally, in co-operation with the Governor-General, Richard Wellesley, he further advanced Britain's position in India itself. Peter Ward completed a PhD in naval history at the University of Exeter after a career in international personnel management, working for Californian high technology companies in the United States, Hong Kong and Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of the mighty Temeraire, the ship behind J. M. W. Turner's iconic painting. The H.M.S. Temeraire, one of Britain’s most illustrious fighting ships, is known to millions through J. M. W. Turner’s masterpiece, The Fighting Temeraire (1839), which portrays the battle-scarred veteran of Britain’s wars with Napoleonic France. In this evocative new volume, Sam Willis tells the extraordinary story of the vessel behind the painting. This tale of two ships spans the heyday of the age of sail: the climaxes of both the Seven Years’ War (1756–63) and the Napoleonic Wars (1798–1815). Filled with richly evocative detail, and narrated with the pace and gusto of a master storyteller, The Fighting Temeraire is an enthralling and deeply satisfying work of narrative history.

Book The Mock Court Martial of British General Sir William Howe

Download or read book The Mock Court Martial of British General Sir William Howe written by Roy Cini Cusumano and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David McCullough, America's award-winning historian, laid down the challenge in an interview on CBS "60 Minutes" when he claimed that when it comes to teaching history "young Americans are historically illiterate." Hall of Fame, award-winning historian Roy Cini Cusumano took up the challenge: His riveting, fast paced court martial with nonstop suspense. British Commander in Chief General Sir William Howe, facing a death sentence, is haunted in London by his flawed military campaigns at Long Island, Brandywine, Barren Hill, and Valley Forge. The trial also exposes Howe's embarrassing life styles including perjury, adultery, and his farewell, wild party gone mad. In his gripping trial Cusumano exposes England's best kept secret of the American Revolutionary War concocted by Sir William at Philadelphia. The King and Parliament were furious. General Howe's best chance to end the war was at Barren Hill or Valley Forge. If he captures Generals Lafayette or George Washington, the war is over. It was that simple. The British commander had the perfect chance to launch his invasion and capture General Washington with 16,000 British and German armies--the two greatest, most powerful on the globe. Washington had only 3000. Skillfully, Sir William imposed a code of silence on his generals. He played down the Barren Hill event as a meaningless tactic. Invading Valley Forge was an absurd idea. Testimonies by Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin unsheathe their rhetorical knives drawn to strike at England's tyrannies. Sir William lost the war; England lost the thirteen colonies. And General George Washington emerged the greatest military commander in the history of warfare.
