Book Brazil Industrial Policies and Manufactured Exports

Download or read book Brazil Industrial Policies and Manufactured Exports written by M. Peñalver and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review of Brazil's trade policy focuses on the manufacturing industry and its impact on industrial efficiency and manufactured export growth. It includes discussion of the Brazilian experience with policies to promote and regulate the development and acquisition of industrial technology and their impact on output and exports. The report is organized in three separate parts: (i) background on industrial development; (ii) a review of trade policies, concentrating on a quantification of the relative incentives for production oriented toward the domestic market and for exports; and (iii) a review of technology policy, including development of human resources, basic research and development, industrial technology, and technology transfer. Three case studies exemplify the main types of technological transfer. The report does not attempt to elaborate all possible policy implications but to present the main information and analytical tools to be considered in the preparation and evaluation of policy alternatives.

Download or read book Drug Targets in Kinetoplastid Parasites written by Hemanta K. Majumder and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-01-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dreaded protozoal diseases caused by a number of Kinetoplastid parasites threaten mankind, as therapeutic tools for the treatment of most parasitic diseases are extremely limited. Development of commercially available vaccines is still far from reality, though research and trial programs continue. This book covers current research into drug therapeutics for the conditions caused by the parasites, which if viewed globally, pose an increasing threat to human health and welfare.

Book Developing Frontier Cities

Download or read book Developing Frontier Cities written by Harvey Lithwick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unique Nature of Frontier Cities and their Development Challenge Harvey Lithwick and Yehuda Grad us The advent of government downsizing, and globalization has led to enormous com petitive pressures as well as the opening of new opportunities. How cities in remote frontier areas might cope with what for them might appear to be a devastating challenge is the subject of this book. Our concern is with frontier cities in particular. In our earlier study, Frontiers in Regional Development (Rowman and Littlefield, 1996), we examined the distinction between frontiers and peripheries. The terms are often used interchangeably, but we believe that in fact, both in scholarly works and in popular usage, very different connotations are conveyed by these concepts. Frontiers evoke a strong positive image, of sparsely settled territories, offering challenges, adventure, unspoiled natural land scapes, and a different, and for many an attractive life style. Frontiers are lands of opportunity. Peripheries conjure up negative images, of inaccessibility, inadequate services and political and economic marginality. They are places to escape from, rather than frontiers, which is were people escape to. Peripheries are places of and for losers.

Book Reservoir Characterization

Download or read book Reservoir Characterization written by Larry Lake and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reservoir Characterization is a collection of papers presented at the Reservoir Characterization Technical Conference, held at the Westin Hotel-Galleria in Dallas on April 29-May 1, 1985. Conference held April 29-May 1, 1985, at the Westin Hotel—Galleria in Dallas. The conference was sponsored by the National Institute for Petroleum and Energy Research, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Reservoir characterization is a process for quantitatively assigning reservoir properties, recognizing geologic information and uncertainties in spatial variability. This book contains 19 chapters, and begins with the geological characterization of sandstone reservoir, followed by the geological prediction of shale distribution within the Prudhoe Bay field. The subsequent chapters are devoted to determination of reservoir properties, such as porosity, mineral occurrence, and permeability variation estimation. The discussion then shifts to the utility of a Bayesian-type formalism to delineate qualitative ""soft"" information and expert interpretation of reservoir description data. This topic is followed by papers concerning reservoir simulation, parameter assignment, and method of calculation of wetting phase relative permeability. This text also deals with the role of discontinuous vertical flow barriers in reservoir engineering. The last chapters focus on the effect of reservoir heterogeneity on oil reservoir. Petroleum engineers, scientists, and researchers will find this book of great value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrastructure—electricity, telecommunications, roads, water, and sanitation—are central to people’s lives. Without it, they cannot make a living, stay healthy, and maintain a good quality of life. Access to basic infrastructure is also a key driver of economic development. This report lays out a framework for understanding infrastructure resilience - the ability of infrastructure systems to function and meet users’ needs during and after a natural hazard. It focuses on four infrastructure systems that are essential to economic activity and people’s well-being: power systems, including the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity; water and sanitation—especially water utilities; transport systems—multiple modes such as road, rail, waterway, and airports, and multiple scales, including urban transit and rural access; and telecommunications, including telephone and Internet connections.
