Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we bring people together? Sociologist and best-selling author Eric Klinenberg introduces a transformative and powerfully uplifting new idea for health, happiness, safety and healing our divided, unequal society. 'This wonderful book shows us how democracies thrive' Steven Levitsky & Daniel Ziblatt, authors of How Democracies Die Too often we take for granted and neglect our libraries, parks, markets, schools, playgrounds, gardens and communal spaces, but decades of research now shows that these places can have an extraordinary effect on our personal and collective wellbeing. Why? Because wherever people cross paths and linger, wherever we gather informally, strike up a conversation and get to know one another, relationships blossom and communities emerge – and where communities are strong, people are safer and healthier, crime drops and commerce thrives, and peace, tolerance and stability take root. Through uplifting human stories and an illuminating tour through the science of social connection, Palaces for the People shows that properly designing and maintaining this ‘social infrastructure’ might be our single best strategy for a more equal and united society.

Download or read book Working for Wildlife written by Ross Galbreath and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " ... Describes the development of wildlife administration and management in New Zealand which led to this combination of functions in the Wildlife Service, and the changes in attitudes towards wildlife and conservation which eventually in 1987 brought about its replacement. Against this background of shifting ideas and policies, "Working for wildlife" also presents the exploits and achievements of the dedicated band of Wildlife officers. They were pre-eminently people of action rather than bureaucratic administrators: fisheries technicians wading in chilly streams to record and measure migrating trout; fauna conservation field officers and scientists searching for the last of the kakapo in the precipitous Fiordland country, or scaling the cliffs of Little Mangere Island to find ways to rescue the black robins ; deer-cullers in the hills fighting the "Deer Menace". They were the original good keen men; the exploits of those who worked for Wildlife will stir the pride of all New Zealanders."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Mataatua wharenui is the most travelled M'ori meeting house in the country. Built in 1875, it was taken to Australia, London and Otago before being returned to Whakat'ne after more than a century away. The story of Mataatua is part of the story of the desecration of Ng'ti Awa by the Crown and the fight of the people to regain their sovereignty. Following the confiscation of Ng'ti Awa land in the 1860s and the devastation to the people of Ng'ti Awa, building a wharenui was proposed as a way to reunite Ng'ti Awa. The result was Mataatua, a magnificent wharenui, honoring the people, their history and whakapapa, and the skills of the craftspeople, and establishing a living marae.
