The lower members of the group do not surpass the social wasps in the complexity of their structure, and fall distinctly below them in matters of domestic economy. The females construct simple tubular nests in the earth, or in walls or stems of plants, and in these they rear a few young, which are nourished on the pollen and nectar of flowers, but never upon animal food. Each female is entirely responsible for her own house and Offspring; there are no workers (sterile females), but simply fertile females and males. In habits they Vary greatly some merely excavate burrows in the soil, others construct their nests of mud, Of woolly fibres, or of pieces neatly cut from leaves of rose trees, sallows, privet and other plants, employing wall crevices, door-locks, spaces beneath roof-slates or tiles, or holes in the earth or in trees as safe hiding-places for their young. Others again build no nest, but cuckoo-like deposit their eggs in the nests formed by other species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Nature Study Review Vol 1 written by American Nature Study Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature-Study Review, Vol. 1: Devoted to All Phases of Nature-Study in Elementary Schools; January, 1905 In attempting to frame a definition of nature - study I may be undertaking something which cannot be accomplished to the satis faction of every one, and yet all will agree, I think, that the sub j ect must be more sharply and clearly stated if we would have it productive of the most good in our schools. One has only to look over the literature of nature-study to see how varied are the standpoints of different teachers with reference to the subject. Some teachers hold that the chief object of nature - study or science, for they use the terms interchangeably, is the acquisition of facts, and consequently fill the course of study with a mass of materials which are to be studied in a scientific manner. Other teachers hold that the subject is valuable chiefly for its training of the mind and senses, and for its power to arouse an interest in and love for the world about us. With the first class the sub ject - matter and its manner of presentation are all important, with the second class the subject-matter is considered immaterial as long as' the desired training of the senses is brought about. The extremes of these two schools are far apart, and represent radi cally different standpoints, but there are many intermediate views held. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Nature, Vol. 1 of 5 A man who has himself derived pleasure, or instruction, from the perusal of a Book, naturally wishes to have these advantages communicated to others; for we presume, that what has singularly affected ourselves, is likely to produce a similar impression on the rest of Mankind. I have read few Performances with more complete satisfaction, and with greater improvement, than the Studies of Nature: in no one have I found the useful and the agreeable more happily blended. Book Modern Nature Study Vol 1

Download or read book Modern Nature Study Vol 1 written by S. Silcox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Nature Study, Vol. 1: A First Book for Use in Canadian Schools It has been impossible for us within the limits of this manual to indicate in detail the various ways in which Nature Study may be of assistance in the teaching of other subjects, composition, geography, etc. On its social side it is related to every subject of the school course, and the points of contact will readily suggest themselves to the teacher. Part I. Of the manual has been devoted to the outline ofa field of Nature Study and to the presentation of the main facts regarding the different forms of animal and plant life. If it were at all possible, it would of course be better that each individual teacher and student should observe and ascertain these facts for himself. The manifest absurdity of such a course, however, becomes apparent when we con sider the width of the field to be covered. Years of unaided observation, even to a mind of a scientific turn, could serve to make the student acquainted only with the barest outlines, and the beginner must, in the majority of cases, eventually become discouraged. The aim of the authors of this man ual in supplying the information given in Part I. Is not to prevent observation on the part of the teacher, but to stimu late observation, and to render it intelligent and fruitful. In no case have we attempted to give more than a mere outline of any animal or plant. The main facts given, it remains for the teacher himself to make a detailed study as indicated in the outline lessons in Part II. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 6 First, as regards sunshine and temperature, bring out the fact that on any given day it is always hotter in the sun than out of it; that our hottest days are those when the sun Shines longest (roughly speaking, that is) that it is colder at night when the sun does not shine than in the day when it does, and so arrive at the deduction that the sun is the great source of heat. What then becomes of the sun on cloudy and foggy days? The teacher will be wise to devote much time to the answering of this question, for the fact of the sun's presence in the sky on dull and Cloudy days, behind the clouds, is by no means clearly realised by children and uninstructed people. Download or read book The Book of Nature Study Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by John Bretland Farmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 3 It will be clear from what has been said that the study Of plant life is abundantly fascinating. Every one with even a small garden can watch the spread Of a given plant, or the adapta tion Of structure, or the growth Of seedlings. Even without a garden a great deal can be done with window boxes, with seeds in saucers, or in glass jam jars. The habit Of Observing Nature brings with it its own delight, and, once begun, is not likely to be given up but the importance Of a real, first-hand knowledge Of Nature cannot be exaggerated in the case Of those engaged in what is popularly called Nature Study. The main Object Of Nature Study should be to develop the mental faculties Of Observation and reasoning. This cannot be done satisfactorily except by those teachers who are always finding out things for themselves, and constantly experimenting in one way or another, either repeating the experiments Of others, or, still better, devising new ones, however small, for themselves. For this reason, constant reference will be made in this section to new work both in America and in Europe, and a bibliography will be given, in which the more recent botanical literature will be mentioned. Laboratory experiments are valuable, and in towns may be the only ones possible, but those who live in the country should be content with nothing -less than Observing Nature accurately and, like Gilbert White Of Selborne, sympathetic ally and reverently. Some distinguished me by their visits and others by epistolary ad dresses the most affecting, conveying their thanks for my Book, as if, in giving it to the Public, I had conferred a personal obli gation on themselves. Several of them have invited me to take up my residence at their country seats, and to enjoy those rural scenes, of which, as they are pleased to say, I am so passion ately fond. Yes, undoubtedly, I should dearly love a country residence, but a residence which I could call my own, and not another man's. Book The Book of Nature Study Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Nature Study Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by John Bretland Farmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Nature Study, Vol. 4 If a plant is dug up and the underground parts freed from the soil the green leafy shoot will be found to have arisen from a thick brown underground stem Of rather irregular shape. The surface Of this is marked with narrow scars left by scale-leaves, and a little examination will throw light on the mode Of growth Of the plant. The leafy shoot grows straight up from the thin anterior portion Of the underground stem, and appears to be the development Of the apex Of the latter. In the axil of a scale leaf at the base Of the shoot is a large bud, which is destined to grow into next year's shoot. On looking at the Older portion of the underground stem we recognise the large circular scars left by the aerial stem at the end Of each annual joint or segment, further growth having always been carried on by a lateral bud. A number Of thick roots grow out from the underground stem, and the latter increases in thickness, its tissues serving as a place of storage for reserve food material. This is used in the earlier stages Of the growth Of the leafy shoots. The cow-parsnip is thus a perennial herb, the leafy shoots Of which die down each autumn, leaving the Old underground stem and the bud which continues the growth next season. When more than one bud is established the underground stem becomes branched, and more than one leafy shoot is sent up from it each year.
