Book Nature Series on British Wild Flowers

Download or read book Nature Series on British Wild Flowers written by Lord Avebury and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Series on British Wild Flowers: Considered in Relation to Insects It is not without much diffidence that I venture on the present publication. For though as an entomologist I have necessarily been long familiar with our common wild plants, I had made no serious study of Botany until recent researches brought prominently before us the intimate relations which exist between flowers and insects. My observations and notes on this subject were originally prepared with the view of encouraging in my children that love of natural history from which I myself have derived so much happiness, but it was suggested to me that a little book such as the present might perhaps be of use to others also. Sprengel, in his admirable work, "Das entdeckte Geheimniss der Natur," published as long ago as the year 1793, was the first to show how much plants are dependent on the visits of insects, and to point out that the forms and colours of flowers are adapted to ensure, and profit by, those visits. Book Britain s Wild Flowers

Download or read book Britain s Wild Flowers written by Rosamond Richardson and published by National Trust. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at the myths, folklore and botany behind over 70 British wildflowers. From hedgerows to meadows, wildflowers can be found throughout our green and pleasant land. In this book, journalist and garden writer Rosamond Richardson traces the history and myths behind each flower to discover the fascinating ways in which the plants were used. Discover which flower used as a medieval lie-detector to test the innocence of suspected criminals, or stuffed in the shoes of Roman centurions to prevent damage to their feet as they marched. From periwinkles, beloved of Chaucer, and the oxlips and ‘nodding violet’ growing in the forest of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the book celebrates the important role wildflowers have played in literature, as well as their uses in food and medicine, and the history, myths and tales behind each species. The nineteenth-century poet John Clare wrote, ‘I love wildflowers (none are weeds with me)'. This book is a celebration of the bountiful history behind Britain’s beloved wildflowers and is perfect for anyone with an interest in gardening, history or the natural world.

Book excerpt: **ONE OF THE GUARDIAN’S BEST BOOKS OF 2018** Join renowned naturalist Peter Marren on an exciting quest to see every species of wild plant native to Britain. The mysterious Ghost Orchid blooms in near darkness among rotting leaves on the forest floor. It blends into the background to the point of invisibility, yet glows, pale and ghostly. The ultimate grail of flower hunters, it has been spotted only once in the past twenty-five years. Its few flowers have a deathly pallor and are said to smell of over-ripe bananas. Peter Marren has been a devoted flower finder all his life. While the Ghost Orchid offers the toughest challenge of any wild plant, there were fifty more British species Peter had yet to see, having ticked off the first 1,400 rummaging in hedges, slipping down gullies and peering in peat bogs. But he set himself the goal of finding the remaining fifty in a single summer. As it turned out, the wettest summer in years. This expert and emotional journey takes Peter the length and the breadth of the British Isles, from the dripping ancient woods of the New Forest to the storm-lashed cliffs of Sutherland. He paddles in lakes, clambers up cliffs in mist and rain, and walks several hundred miles, but does he manage to find them all? Partly about plants, partly autobiography, Chasing the Ghost is also a reminder that to engage with wild flowers, all we need to do is look around us and enjoy what we see. Praise for Chasing the Ghost: ‘Peter Marren is the unsung hero of Britain’s nature writers’ Stephen Moss, author of Dynasties ‘Jolly, quixotic and ends with real poignancy’ Guardian ‘A poignant reminder to us all to engage with the wild flowers that grow around us’ i Newspaper
